2ND CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS The Workshop on the Boat Digital Tools for Connecting with Blue Spaces A workshop held at AVI 2026 Conference in Venice https://wontheboat.altervista.org Important Dates Submission deadline: March 29th, 2026 Notification of acceptance: April 10th, 2026 Workshop: June 9, 2026 Submission form: https://forms.gle/VxTR1vDR8UcXAYS8A A full-day workshop held on a boat in the Venice Lagoon, exploring the connection with natural spaces, a theme of great interest not only for improving the awareness about the importance of natural spaces that surround us, but also for their demonstrated benefits for physical and mental health. Digital tools can play an important role in fostering connection with natural spaces by informing, stimulating, or facilitating immersive experiences. The journey will be an opportunity to discuss these issues and explore the related design space through activities inspired by the most naturalistic part of the Venice Lagoon. The field trip will be supported by a marine ecologist who will introduce you to the aquatic environment and its connections with humans and other living beings inhabiting the Lagoon, to inspire your work. The workshop is organized as a full-day activity, hosted on a hybrid boat that will depart from San Servolo (the AVI 2026 conference site https://www.unive.it/avi2026) in the morning and travel in the North Lagoon. The return to San Servolo is scheduled for the afternoon. Seats are limited! The event will have a global scope along 3 thematic lines: cognition, ethics, and society. It will cover current debates about: AI and philosophy of mind; cognitive architectures; machine learning and cognitive development; large language models and visual information; robotics and embodied cognition; neuroscience-inspired AI; algorithmic bias and fairness; transparency and explainability; accountability and responsibility; privacy and surveillance; autonomy and control; AI impact on human values and social inequalities; the future of work and automation; governance, regulation and public policies; AI, human rights and democracy; AI and global development; information and AI education. The event will consist of 10 courses, 2 keynote lectures, 3 symposia collecting short contributions from participants, and 2 individual presentations on debated topics. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Face to face interaction and networking will be main ingredients of the event. It will be also possible to fully participate in vivo remotely. ADDRESSED TO: Graduate students, postgraduate students and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees, so people less or more advanced in their career will be welcome as well. Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. Overall, AIces 2026 is addressed to students, researchers and practitioners who want to keep themselves updated about recent developments and future trends. Authors will have two primary options for publishing Open Access articles with ACM: the ACM Open institutional model or by paying Article Processing Charges (APCs). With over 2,600 institutions already part of ACM Open, the majority of ACM-sponsored conference papers will not require APCs from authors or conferences (currently, around 76%). Authors from institutions not participating in ACM Open will need to pay an APC to publish their papers, unless they qualify for a financial waiver. This temporary subsidized pricing will apply to all conferences scheduled for 2026. ______ SCOPE ______ Broadly, this workshop considers the intersection of eye tracking research with visualization, whether the contributions relate to eye tracking studies of visualizations, or vice versa, visualization techniques for eye tracking. Technological advances in computer vision algorithms and sensor hardware have greatly reduced the implementational and financial costs of eye tracking. Thus, it is unsurprising to witness a significant increase in its use as a research tool in fields beyond the traditional domains of biological vision, psychology, and neuroscience, in particular, in visualization and human-computer interaction research. One of the key challenges lies in the analysis, interaction, and visualization of complex spatio-temporal datasets of gaze behavior, which is further complicated by complementary datasets such as semantic labels, user interactions and/or accompanying physiological sensor recordings. Ultimately, the research objective is to allow eye tracking data to be effectively interpreted in terms of the observer’s decision-making and cognitive processes. To achieve this, it is necessary to draw upon our current understanding of gaze-behavior across various and related fields, from vision and cognition to visualization. The Bellwether Postdoctoral Scholar program at the UC Berkeley School of Information is designed to allow exceptionally promising young researchers the time to develop their own research while collaborating with leading established faculty. It is designed to accelerate careers, and to maximize the ability of Bellwether Postdoctoral Scholars to build independent research trajectories. To accomplish this, a portion (30-40%) of each post-doc’s time will be reserved for their own independent research and publication efforts, including publishing results from their dissertation. Additionally, all Bellwether Postdoctoral Scholars will work with a mentor or mentors on research projects in specific areas (60-70%). There are several emphasis areas, one of which is relevant to the information visualization community: BPS 5: The goal of this postdoctoral position is to contribute to the development of an empirically-backed theoretical understanding of how people make sense of the combination of graphic and textual information. We seek a scholar with expertise in some combination of information visualization, the psychology of reading and/or diagram interpretation, and cognitive science or neuroscience more generally to investigate human conception at the intersection of language and information visualization. *Expertise in conducting and analyzing eye gaze is a requirement of the position*. Previous events were held in Bilbao, Genova, Warsaw, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Guimarães, Luleå, Bournemouth, Bari, and Porto. Deep learning is a branch of artificial intelligence covering a spectrum of current frontier research and industrial innovation that provides more efficient algorithms to deal with large-scale data in a huge variety of environments: computer vision, neurosciences, speech recognition, language processing, human-computer interaction, drug discovery, biomedicine and healthcare, medical image analysis, recommender systems, advertising, fraud detection, robotics, games, business and finance, biotechnology, physics and astrophysics, biometrics, communications, climate sciences, geographic information systems, signal processing, genomics, materials design, video technology, social systems, earth and sustainability, mathematical proofs, etc. etc. The field is also raising a number of relevant questions about efficiency and robustness of the algorithms, explainability, transparency, interpretability, risks and safety, as well as important ethical concerns at the frontier of current knowledge that deserve careful multidisciplinary discussion. Most deep learning subareas will be displayed and main challenges identified through 16 four-hour and a half courses, 2 keynote lectures, 1 round table, and a hackathon competition among participants. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Face to face interaction and networking will be main ingredients of the event. It will be also possible to fully participate in vivo remotely. ADDRESSED TO: Graduates, postgraduates and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees, hence people less or more advanced in their career will be welcome as well. Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. Overall, DeepLearn 2026 is addressed to students, researchers and practitioners who want to keep themselves updated about recent developments and future trends. All will surely find it fruitful to listen to and discuss with major researchers, industry leaders and innovators. VENUE: DeepLearn 2026 will take place in Orléans, located in the heart of the Loire Valley, which was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site in 2000.
