These tools have typically been designed for experts, including scientists, financiers, and other professionals. However, individuals are now increasingly able to collect and manipulate large volumes of data about themselves (e.g. biometric data, exercise, sleep, and nutrition data) as well as data about topics that interest them (neighborhood statistics, sports metrics, environmental data, etc.). This "personal data" is creating new opportunities for both visualization and visual analytics, and presents a variety of new research and design challenges. Recently, the visualization community has started to consider the emerging and important case of "personal visualization" and examine the challenges and potential associated with collecting, visualizing, and making sense of personal data. This workshop, held in conjunction with the <http://ieeevis.org/> 2015 IEEE VIS conference in Chicago, will examine the opportunities and challenges for personal visualization and personal visual analytics. The venue will provide an opportunity to discuss the current landscape of personal visualization tools and approaches as well as highlight ongoing work in this new area. We welcome submissions both as papers and as posters/demos. PAPERS Authors should submit a 2-4 page position paper in <http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera_tvcg.html> TVCG format which describe a personal visualization challenge, informed by their own research, observations, or thinking about personal visualization and analytics. Position papers should clearly identify one challenge and discuss implications for the visualization community. POSTERS/DEMOS Authors wishing to demo should submit a 2-page description of the work in <http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera_tvcg.html> TVCG format, accompanied by an A0 poster and/or a plan for an interactive demonstration. Posters and demos should present new or ongoing research on the topic of personal visualization. Example demonstrations might include tools the authors have built for themselves, for relatives, or for novice communities, while poster submissions might include design ideas and early sketches describing new personal visualization tools and concepts. TOPICS AND SCOPE: ------------------------ Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Defining and exploring the relationship between personal visualization and parallel research areas such as personal informatics that focus on collecting personal data. * Providing approaches for visualizing and making sense of large quantities of multi-dimensional, temporal, multi-variate personal data. * Examining the role of communities, sharing, and privacy in personal analytics. * New application areas that involve personal data (health and well-being, environmental concerns, sport monitoring, etc.). * Designing visualization and analysis tools for non-expert. * Exploring the relationship between personal visualization tools and data portraits, data sculptures, and other artistic representations of personal information. * Evaluation tools and strategies for measuring the impact of personal visualization. * Visualization designs that consider factors such as pleasure, gamification, and engagement with personal data. DSIA Workshop Submission Deadline Extended (and Keynote Speaker announcement)

Due to a conflict with the VLDB deadline, we are extending the submission deadline for the Workshop on Data Systems for Interactive Analysis (DSIA) by 2 weeks. The new deadline is Monday, August 17, 2015. In addition, we are pleased to announce that Joe Hellerstein from UC Berkeley will be the keynote speaker for the workshop. Joseph M. Hellerstein is a Chancellor's Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, whose work focuses on data-centric systems and the way they drive computing. He is an ACM Fellow, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow and the recipient of three ACM-SIGMOD "Test of Time" awards for his research. In 2010, Fortune Magazine included him in their list of 50 smartest people in technology, and MIT's Technology Review magazine included his work on their TR10 list of the 10 technologies "most likely to change our world". Hellerstein is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Trifacta, a software vendor providing intelligent interactive solutions to the messy problem of wrangling data. He serves on the technical advisory boards of a number of computing and Internet companies including EMC, SurveyMonkey, Captricity, and Dato, and previously served as the Director of Intel Research, Berkeley. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2015. *** New Submission Deadline: August 17 (Monday), 2015 *** MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND OF THE WORKSHOP The goal of this workshop is to foster innovative research at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. Database researchers have developed techniques for storing and querying massive amounts of data, including methods for distributed, streaming and approximate computation. Machine learning techniques provide ways to discover unexpected patterns and to automate and scale well-defined analysis procedures. Recent systems research has looked at how to develop novel database systems architectures to support the iterative, optimization-oriented workloads of machine learning algorithms. Of course, both the inputs and outputs of these systems are ultimately driven by people, in support of analysis tasks. The life-cycle of data involves an iterative, interactive process of determining which questions to ask, the data to analyze, appropriate features and models, and interpreting results. In order to achieve better analysis outcomes, data processing systems require improved interfaces that account for the strengths and limitations of human perception and cognition. Meanwhile, to keep up with the rising tide of data, interactive visualization tools need to integrate more techniques from databases and machine learning. In this workshop, we will explore the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to jump start cross-pollination between these fields. The program will be split between invited talks from researchers in these communities, and speculative, ongoing work that straddles the areas. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. We encourage late-breaking work, research in progress, and position papers in interactive analysis, broadly construed. For example, topics of interest to the workshop include (but are not limited to): * design of database architectures for interactive analysis * novel database applications for interactive analysis * novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * evaluation of database systems for interactive analysis * identify unique characteristics of database for supporting vis * communication protocols between front and back ends * techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * techniques for metadata generation * front-end architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities We are interested, more generally, in the questions that arise at the *intersection* of these systems. *Job posting - PhD scholarship on Visual Modelling of Complex Engineering Systems - Technical University of Denmark* DTU Management Engineering offers one 3-year PhD fellowship to conduct research into Visual Modelling of Complex Engineering Systems Design. The position will be based in the Engineering Systems Group. The research project, part of the EuroTech Universities Alliance Partnership, will be carried out in association with the Institute of Product Development at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and other industry partners and public organisations. *Responsibilities and tasks * Engineering design deals with complex subject matters. Visualisations are fundamental to studying and communicating complex subject matters. However, beyond acknowledging this value, hardly any emphasis has been paid to the role of visual modelling in engineering systems design. Visualisations stimulate thought, enable collaboration across technical disciplines, inform technical as well as business decision making processes, and increase our ability to spot and avoid mistakes. Awareness and integration of different views is particularly important against the background of large-scale engineering projects, with the involvement of a myriad of technical and non-technical audiences. Moreover, we can observe a trend towards model-based engineering, enabling significant productivity improvements in the design process. However, operationalising the opportunities of model-based engineering is currently limited due to a lack of intuitive visual notations. Therefore, the project’s overall objective is to generate and enable the conscious use of integrated and interactive visualisations in engineering systems design that support integration of multiple views, uncover trends in data, and provide engineering intelligence for robust decision-making. In other words, the successful candidate will be able to model and communicate complex subject matters in ways that are understandable and actionable by decision-makers (e.g. in the form of visual representations, including network graphs, infographics, and dashboards). Core questions include: •How best to model and visualise complex systems? •How to use visual design of information to unearth trends in data, enable insights and foster robust decision-making? •What visualisations work best for communication among a variety of audiences? •How to balance information content and interaction qualities of visualisations?This project cherises the fruitful intersection between network science and design. Depending on the disciplinary background and expertise of the candidate, there are opportunities to tailor the project and push the research frontiers accordingly. We invite talented candidates who are passionate about conducting key research activities such as a) identifying critical transdisciplinary communication situations in the development cycle of engineering systems through literature reviews, field studies, and data-mining, b) analysing and categorising existing visualisations with respect to their particular properties, e.g. for supporting transdisciplinary communication situations, c) developing appropriate information visualisations and visual languages, d) testing for improved model comprehension by conducting experiments, and e) guiding visual modelling practices for improved complex engineering system design research and industry practice. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that applicants from a broad range of technical backgrounds will be considered. Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) a first class degree or equivalent, preferably in engineering, computer science, information design, graphic design, psychology, or behavioural economics. Preference will be given to those candidates with a high level of English who can demonstrate an aptitude for programming, conceptual and empirical work and the confidence to network within academic, public, and commercial organisations. The 2015 contest theme is “Perceived vs. Actual Student Interest.” The contest will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG) <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC and in collaboration with ACT <http://www.act.org/>, Inc. (ACT is a non-profit organization in the education readiness assessment sector.) Contest Challenge: Perceived vs. Actual Student Interest The importance of selecting and pursuing a major or career that fits a student’s interests and passions cannot be overstated. ACT’s research has shown that over time, students tend to declare the same or similar majors in their first year of college as their indicated planned major. However, ACT also has data regarding students’ measured—rather than self-reported—interests and has developed a “fit index” that can help accurately predict success based on their fit with selected or intended majors. VPG’s contest challenge is to develop a visual representation of Interest Perceived vs. Actual data that helps to relate the complexities of how students’ measured interests match with their indicated plans, declared majors, or their persistence into their sophomore year. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: · Which majors are most affected by the influx/outflux of students? · Which majors have had an increase or decrease in measured interest over time? · Which majors have experienced differences in follow-through of students over time? The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-vpg-doctoral-dissertation-award> is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the IEEE VIS conference<http://ieeevis.org/>. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between July 31 two years before the award and July 31 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between July 31, 2013 and July 31, 2015 are eligible for the 2015 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SUBMISSION DEADLINE Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on July 31, 2015. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1, 2015. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A). Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. A nomination letter written by the student's advisor, which includes: * the name, email address, and phone number of the advisor, * the name and email address of the candidate, and * a one-page summary of the significance of the dissertation (references to papers should be provided on an extra sheet) 2. EXTENDED CALL FOR PAPERS, POSTERS, AND DEMONSTRATIONS: Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC) (In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2015, Oct 25th, Chicago, IL) Website: www.visualanalyticshealthcare.org *** Extended paper submission deadline: July 31st, 2015 *** CALL FOR PAPERS: ---------------- The 2015 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC 2015) is the sixth annual workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to discuss state-of-the-art data visualization techniques and review how such techniques can be applied to healthcare data. The primary objective of the annual workshop is to bring together medical experts, leading scientists, and visionaries to discuss visualization techniques that can be applied to healthcare data and discuss the areas of healthcare that need more attention from the visualization and visual data mining communities. The workshop will allow participants to showcase their ongoing work on visual analytics of healthcare-related data through podium, posters, or demo presentations as well as to learn more about emerging techniques, software applications, and datasets. This year the VAHC 2015 workshop is co-located with the IEEE VIS conference in Chicago, Illinois. To formalize the community, the VAHC workshop and the workshop on Visualizing Electronic Health Record Data -- EHRVis (www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/parisehrvis/) have merged and plan on hosting events at IEEE VIS and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Symposium, alternating yearly. TOPICS AND SCOPE: ------------------ We will welcome discussions of the use of visual approaches, interaction design, statistical methods, and machine learning for healthcare data analysis. Participants may address the needs of a variety of users, including clinical researchers, epidemiologists, public health analysts, pharmaco-vigilance experts, physicians, hospital-based quality assurance officers, insurance claim analysts, and patients. Topics of interests include but are not limited to: * Visual Analytics of health data (e.g., in surgery, radiology, Electronic Health Records, emergency room and operation room, patient safety, Public Health Data, patient-generated health data, clinical data, drugs) * Visual Analytics for forecasting and tracking of health data (e.g., pandemic forecasting and tracking, outcome forecasting or prediction) * Improving patient understanding and/or physician-patient communication with Visual Analytics * Dashboards for health data (e.g., Public Health Surveillance programs) PAPER SUBMISSION AND FORMAT GUIDELINES: --------------------------------------- We encourage a diverse range of submissions and demonstrations from academic, healthcare organizations, and industry that addresses any of the topics listed above. Contest Challenge: Perceived vs. Actual Student Interest The importance of selecting and pursuing a major or career that fits a student's interests and passions cannot be overstated. ACT's research has shown that over time, students tend to declare the same or similar majors in their first year of college as their indicated planned major. However, ACT also has data regarding students' measured-rather than self-reported-interests and has developed a "fit index" that can help accurately predict success based on their fit with selected or intended majors. VPG's contest challenge is to develop a visual representation of Interest Perceived vs. Actual data that helps to relate the complexities of how students' measured interests match with their indicated plans, declared majors, or their persistence into their sophomore year. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Which majors are most affected by the influx/outflux of students? * Which majors have had an increase or decrease in measured interest over time? * Which majors have experienced differences in follow-through of students over time? Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than three submissions to the 2015 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Contest packets must be received by 5 p.m. PDT on Friday, August 28, 2015 to qualify for the 2015 contest. Selection Procedure All active IEEE VPG members<http://vgtc.org/content/vpg-members> who do not make a submission to the contest will be invited to participate in the first-round review. The top contest submissions from this first-round review will undergo a second round of reviews conducted by five distinguished IEEE VPG members representing different backgrounds, who will be chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPG chairs. The five-member selection committee will thoroughly review and assess the top contest submissions. The chair of the selection committee will submit his or her recommendation for best visualization to the IEEE VGTC chair by Friday, Oct 16, 2015. Contest Award Along with a certificate, VPG will give a check for $100 USD to the winner in each of the following categories: 1. Most practical 2. Most original 3. One or more surprise categories in areas determined by the committee after reviewing the submissions. Submissions will be considered in all categories and may win more than one award. Perhaps most importantly, winners in all categories will have a chance to see their work being applied to ACT's data analysis, product development, and/or marketing/promotional efforts. Submission Details The 2015 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Contest participants should email the submission package to ieeevpg(a)googlegroups.com<mailto:ieeevpg@googlegroups.com>. The package must include: 1. A pdf file that contains: a. Title of the data-visualization contest submission b. Name, affiliation, email address, and postal address of the participant c. A 200-300 word description of the visualization written in English 2.
