Watson Research Center is looking for research scientists and post-docs with interest in the field of data visualization and visual analytics, to design next-generation user interfaces for making sense of big data, particularly in the healthcare domain. This position is based at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, NY. The Research Scientist and Post-doc will be working alongside visualization, machine learning, and medical researchers performing cutting-edge research in data-driven medicine. The ideal candidate should possess or be nearing completion of a doctorate in computer science, human-computer interaction, or medical informatics with demonstrated experience in the use of visualization and visual analytics. In addition to being technically abreast of the literature and progress within the visualization research community, the researcher is expected to generate highly novel ideas and be involved in their execution and implementation. S/he is expected to contribute significantly to the team in developing new visualizations, leveraging big data from longitudinal electronic medical records, patient-controlled devices, and genomic data. The researcher should also have strong system design and development skills and should be able to deploy software services individually and as part of an extended team. Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team across multiple geographies is also important. ************************************************************************ CALL FOR PAPERS DEXIS 2015 Workshop on Visual Data Exploration on Interactive Surfaces November 15, 2015 - Madeira, Portugal in conjunction with ITS 2015 http://aviz.fr/dexis2015 *** Submission Deadline: September 4, 2015 *** ************************************************************************ We invite you to join DEXIS 2015 - a workshop on Visual Data Exploration on Interactive Surfaces, held in conjunction with ITS 2015 on the wonderful island of Madeira in Portugal on November 15, 2015. Objectives ---------- DEXIS 2015 focuses on the use of interactive surfaces for visual data exploration. Interactive tabletops and surfaces provide are more and more commonly used for data visualization and analysis, and hence offer rich opportunities to researchers and practitioners. They provide benefits in various ways, e.g., * data can be accessed and analyzed anywhere, any time (e.g., on tablets or on public displays), * novel visualization designs and interaction experiences contribute to richer user experience, promoting the use of visualization systems even to non-experts, and * data analysis is increasingly turning into a collaborative process, and interactive surfaces offer promising possibilities for computer- supported collaborative analysis. Despite these benefits, much remains to be learned about the effects of providing a visual data exploration experience on interactive surfaces: Interactive surfaces often come in the forms of larger screens, smaller screens, more screens, higher pixel counts, and multiple simultaneous inputs, all of which create demanding challenges for designing visualization and interaction techniques. In addition, we need to learn more about designing surface-based visualization systems for richer user experience, find out about scenarios that are suited for such systems, and unveil the added value of surface-based visualization applications in realistic settings. As the second iteration of the first DEXIS workshop held at ITS 2011, we will discuss & reflect on research dedicated to visualization systems for interactive surfaces, define open research questions in the field, and refine research agendas aiming to shape future research in the field. Topics ------ Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * design of information visualization, scientific visualization, or visual analytics interfaces and environments for interactive surfaces, * design of interactive visual representations for collaborative work on interactive surfaces, * design of multi-display environments for data analysis, * the use of interactive surfaces to visualize and interact with information and data, * guidelines and best practices for visualization and analysis environments on interactive surfaces, * visual analysis and exploration for a wider range of audiences using emerging display technology, * aspects of cognition in interactive visualization and visual analysis environments, * evaluation of interaction in single- or multi-user information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics systems, * collaborative visualization and visual analytics systems with interactive surfaces, * collaborative sensemaking & decision making and its connection to interactive surfaces, and * comparative experiences of visualization on desktop and visualization on interactive surfaces. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2015. *** Submission Deadline: July 31, 2015 *** MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND The goal of this workshop is to foster innovative research at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. Database researchers have developed techniques for storing and querying massive amounts of data, including methods for distributed, streaming and approximate computation. Machine learning techniques provide ways to discover unexpected patterns and to automate and scale well-defined analysis procedures. Recent systems research has looked at how to develop novel database systems architectures to support the iterative, optimization-oriented workloads of machine learning algorithms. Of course, both the inputs and outputs of these systems are ultimately driven by people, in support of analysis tasks. The life-cycle of data involves an iterative, interactive process of determining which questions to ask, the data to analyze, appropriate features and models, and interpreting results. In order to achieve better analysis outcomes, data processing systems require improved interfaces that account for the strengths and limitations of human perception and cognition. Meanwhile, to keep up with the rising tide of data, interactive visualization tools need to integrate more techniques from databases and machine learning. In this workshop, we will explore the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to jump start cross-pollination between these fields. The program will be split between invited talks from researchers in these communities, and speculative, ongoing work that straddles the areas. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. We encourage late-breaking work, research in progress, and position papers in interactive analysis, broadly construed. For example, topics of interest to the workshop include (but are not limited to): * design of database architectures for interactive analysis * novel database applications for interactive analysis * novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * evaluation of database systems for interactive analysis * identify unique characteristics of database for supporting vis * communication protocols between front and back ends * techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * techniques for metadata generation * front-end architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities We are interested, more generally, in the questions that arise at the *intersection* of these systems. Social networks are now used to report crimes to law enforcement agencies, monitor health epidemics, issue community warnings and, lately, also to connect devices in a social network-based Internet of Things. We refer to the augmented use of social networks for collaboration between people, as well as between machines, as the Social Collaborative Internet. This international workshop on Social Collaborative Internet (SCI-2015) focuses on the crossroads between scientists, researchers, industry practitioners and students from diverse domains in social networking, communications and the Internet of Things. Its purpose is to attract novel contributions on the analysis, design, modeling, implementation and evaluation of technologies that can support the Social Collaborative Internet. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1, 2015. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A). Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world.
