CALL FOR PAPERS =============== The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI 2016) (vinci-conf.org) Dallas, Texas, USA, 24-26 September 2016 ======================================== Visual communication through graphical or sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds or cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '16) will be held on 24-26 September 2016, in Dallas, TX, USA, in the heart of the complex of over 600 major multinational technology corporations, with 47 non-stop flights to international destinations. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier, SCI indexed). In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: = Cognitive aspects of visual information comprehension = Empirical studies of novel visual metaphors = Visual interaction through multimodality = Visual approaches for knowledge discovery = Computational aesthetics = Visual analytics = Graph drawing and (multivariate) network visualization = Information visualization = Graphical user interface design = Aesthetics in visual communication = Influence of visual arts and design = Visual modeling languages and UML = Visual communication metaphors = Visual programming languages = Visualization on mobile devices = Applications like SoftVis, BioVis, GeoVis, ... = Sketching = Human-computer interaction 2. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI’2016 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier; SCI indexed). In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed). Research papers and experience reports of up to ten (10), short papers of up to four (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '16 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '16 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. In this case, the special session will be cancelled. 5. The ICCS conferences evolved from a series of seven annual workshops on conceptual graphs, starting with an informal gathering hosted by John F. Sowa in 1986. Recently, graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) paradigms are getting more and more attention. The aim of the ICCS 2016 conference is to build upon its long standing expertise in graph-based KRR and focus on providing modelling, formal and application results of graph-based systems. ICCS 2016 will be co-located with FOIS 2016, held in Annecy, in the Polytech building at the campus of the University of Savoie. The conference welcomes contributions that address graph-based representation and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Bayesian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF(S), Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, Graph Databases, Diagrams, etc.) from a modelling, theoretical and application viewpoint: - Modelling results will investigate concrete real world needs for graph-based representation, how certain use cases are of interest to the graph community, how using graphs can bring added (business) value, what kind of graph representation is needed for a given case, etc. - Technical results will include fundamental graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation, etc. - Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the graph-based proposed solutions in the context of the use case studied with respect to other possible solutions. In conjunction with the International Working Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces - AVI 2016, Bari, Italy, 7 - 10 June 2016. http://tinyurl.com/vvh2016 <http://tinyurl.com/vvh2016> *************************************************** AIM The workshop focuses on the role of interactive data visualization tools (including configurable dashboards and Web-based interfaces) by which people can gain insight from healthcare data. These data encompass the output of sensors, the structured and unstructured content of hospital records, patient records, diaries, as well as messages exchanged within vertical social media, email correspondences between patients and their doctors, and clinical discussions among different specialists. On the other hand, the intended users of these tools encompass clinicians, nurses, managers of healthcare facilities and agencies, policy makers and common citizens. The variety of the health content at hand, the heterogeneity of the users involved and, above all, their lay nature with respect to data-oriented and e-literacy skills call for tools that are easy-to-use, easy-to-learn, and tailorable to multiple contexts and situations of unintended goals and needs. The study and design of these tools should be covered by a multidisciplinary field that is still in its infancy and has been recently dubbed Human-Data Interaction [1], being at the intersection of Data Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction. This workshop solicits contributions on how to either visualize health data in innovative ways, or visualize innovative health data in traditional (yet effective) manners; as well as on how to define and assess the usability of advanced interactive tools of data visualization, their role in appropriate decision making and coordination, and the quality of the information these tools make available for its interpretation, including the underlying motivations and arguments that foster continuity of care and decision-making on-the-go. The workshop also solicits contributions reporting cases of successful appropriation by lay people and end users as well as failures in empowering them in making sense of complex and multidimensional healthcare datasets. Finally we are interested in methodological and design-oriented contributions that could share user-centered and activity-centered methods, techniques, and heuristics for the design of interactive data visualization tools and applications supporting data work, data telling and data interpretation.
