Knowledge of, or willingness to learn Dutch is an advantage. 2) Job Description Thanks to the digital, mobile and IT revolutions, massive amounts of data are nowadays available at unprecedented spatial, temporal, and thematic scales. Hence, for most applications, data availability is becoming less of an issue. However, the development of methodological approaches that can handle these massive and heterogeneous datasets remains challenging. – You will conduct international high-quality research and contribute to developing a research network, leading a strong and visible research line on the use of BigGeodata technologies to process massive and heterogeneous datasets. – You will also further integrate Big Geodata computational skills within the department. – You will teach Masters level coursework, supervise MSc theses and contribute to the development of new courses including face-to-face, blended learning, and distance learning, based on open source and cloud computing solutions. – You will supervise PhD students in combination with a departmental professor and will engage in acquisition and implementation of consulting tasks for the department. – You will undertake management and/or administrative tasks within the department and will initiate and acquire new research and educational projects. Reminder: Position papers are due March 9 AVI 2018 Workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization https://sites.google.com/view/multimodalvis/ May 29, 2018 Workshop Overview Multimodal interaction offers many potential benefits for data visualization to help people stay in the flow of their visual analysis and presentation. Often, the strengths of one interaction modality can offset weaknesses of another. However, existing visualization tools and interaction techniques have mostly explored a single input modality such as mouse, touch, pen, or more recently, natural language and speech. Recent interest in deploying data visualizations on diverse display hardware including mobile, AR/VR, and large displays create an urgent need to develop natural and fluid interaction techniques that can work in these contexts. Multimodal interaction offers strong promise for such situations, but its unique challenges for data visualization have yet to be deeply investigated. This workshop will bring together researchers with expertise in visualization, interaction design, and natural user interfaces. We aim to build a community of multimodal visualization researchers, explore synergies and challenges in our research, and establish an agenda for research on multimodal interactions for visualization. Use-Inspired Basic Research in Immersive Analytics https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/6416/use-inspired-immersive-ana… Submission deadline: May 18 2018 About this Research Topic: Immersive analytics (IA) investigates how new interaction and display technologies can be used to support analytical reasoning and decision making. Here immersion is regarded as an objective measure of the quality of the system’s technology, a measure of the extent to which the system presents a vivid environment, be it high-fidelity rendering or not, tracked or not, and stereoscopic or not. As a result, large high-resolution displays and the entire spectrum of mixed reality (MR) and ubiquitous computing all introduce opportunities to facilitate analytical reasoning and thus fall into the immersive analytics paradigm. This Research Topic is dedicated to "use-inspired basic research in immersive analytics" where a real-world problem shapes the design and studies. We encourage the discussions on intriguing issues of persuasive power of communications utilizing immersive display technologies, understanding the multifarious symbiosis relationships between humans and computing, and how best display and interaction can be used not only as a mechanism to conceive and communicate reality or how a set of visual variables can be encoded, but a means for influence, a way to persuade viewers to share that reality or at least to act in accordance with it. The consequences for design will be more powerful if immersive analytics can alter human assessments of and actions on their data. We are also interested in the building blocks of thought and crucial insights to be gained from the underlying structure of mental activities: the brain’s operations, which is perhaps the great remaining mysteries of human-computer integrated analytical reasoning. We like to explore how visual aids can link seemingly unrelated actions and events and how embodiment and new metaphors shape our minds and thinking, inspired by real-world uses. Note that the video should be self-explaining, no in-person explanation of the videos should be necessary at the conference. This should either include an audio track or subtitles. You should make sure that background audio is free from copyright or that you are licensed to use it. The video should not include a title slide with the title of the work, authors, affiliations, etc. at the start of the video. We will add this to all videos in a consistent style. A submitted video should have a maximum length of 5 minutes and should not be larger than 100 MB. We recommend using MP4 format with H.264 codec and a resolution of 1280 x 720 px, at 24 to 30 frames/s. Most video production systems can encode in this format and most video applications are able to play it. If you use a different codec, you risk that reviewers might not be able to view the video clip and you will need to re-encode the video clip for the conference proceeding USB. The video should play in the VLC media player version 2.2.6 (freely available at http://www.videolan.org/vlc) without additional software, codecs or settings. The reasons why stories have been told are manifold: to entertain, to transfer knowledge between generations, to keep cultural heritage, or to warn others of dangers. With the emergence of the digitalization of media many new possibilities to tell stories emerged in serious and non-entertainment contexts. A very simple example is the idea of serious gaming - thus digital games without primarily an entertainment purpose. Within this handbook, we generalize the approach of serious games, on other genres of digital storytelling, and call for handbook typical contributions which introduce "serious storytelling: storytelling with a purpose beyond entertainment" as new approach. We seek for handbook alike contributions, reviews of existing application areas, established theories and methods, fundamental concepts, ground breaking research results in a transdisciplinary approach. We would like to focus on shaping a NOVEL research direction, and define Digital Serious Storytelling as a new research pathway. Therefore, we are seeking for establishing theory. It brings together practitioners, researchers, artists, designers, and industry on the design, creation, development, use, application and evaluation of digital entertainment content and experience systems. The conference series is cross-disciplinary, and stretches over the domains of computer science, human-computer-interaction, content production, digital games, multimedia, media studies, art, and design. The conference series aims at presenting high quality scientific results spanning from theory to application, use-cases, experience, and demonstrations. We solicit papers, posters, and demonstrations, as well as we are looking for tutorial and workshop proposal. The conference theme for 2018 is "Explore . Create . Reflect . Develop". All papers are published by Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Best full papers are recommended to publish in a special issue of the Elsevier Entertainment Computing Journal. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 11th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '18) will be held on 13-15 August 2018, in Växjö, Sweden. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of an SCI-indexed journal. In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: = Cognitive aspects of visual information comprehension = Empirical studies of novel visual metaphors = Visual interaction through multimodality = Visual approaches for knowledge discovery = Computational aesthetics = Visual and immersive analytics = Graph drawing and (multivariate) network visualization = Information visualization = Graphical user interface design = Aesthetics in visual communication = Influence of visual arts and design = Visual modeling languages and UML = Visual communication metaphors = Visual programming languages = Visualization on mobile devices = Visualization in virtual, mixed, and augmented reality = Applications like SoftVis, BioVis, GeoVis, ... = Sketching = Human-computer interaction 2. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI?018 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of an SCI-indexed journal. In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed). Research papers and experience reports of up to eight (8), short papers of up to four (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2018. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '18 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. Workshop organizers will be expected to set up an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, and practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audiences to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '18. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '18 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2018) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '18 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. In this case, the special session will be canceled. 5.
