A full time postdoctoral position in Data Visualization area is available in The National Science & Technology Institute for Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) at the Federal University of Bahia, in Salvador, Brazil. We are looking for outstanding candidates holding a PhD in Computer Science/Engineering or related fields with a strong Computer Science/Engineering background. Excellent knowledge in the research areas of Information Visualization and Visual Analytics is a strong advantage. Duties will involve: · Research, develop and implement visualization methods to support analysis of social media data (temporal, numerical, categorical, text, networks…) · Writing for highly ranked journals and top tier conferences · Possibly co-advising undergraduate and graduate students Ideal start date is early March 2018. The initial appointment is for one year, with a monthly rate of BRL 4,100 (no taxes). An 18 months extension of the initial appointment is possible based on the progress in research. INCT.DD The National Science & Technology Institute for Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) is a network of laboratories and research groups involving 20 Brazilian institutions and 23 international research centers, which is the national reference center in the areas of digital democracy, e-government and online politics. The INCT.DD integrates a program of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication, funded for 6 years to act in scientific research, transfer of knowledge to the sector for society and the private sector, training of human resources and internationalization. The available postdoctoral position will be exercised in the framework of a cooperation between INCT.DD and professors of Department of Computer Science (DCC) at the Federal University of Bahia. The Department of Computer Science at UFBA is a young and growing faculty that has already acquired an impressive international visibility in many computer science disciplines, and offers great opportunities to grow and collaborate with top scientists. Our Academic Staff includes 36 researchers, covering several research areas, such as Computational Intelligence, Visualization, Big Data, Computer Networks, Computer Science Education, Distributed Systems, Formal Methods, Graph Theory and Optimization, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), Logic, Real-Time Systems, Software Engineering, Visual Computing, and Web. The Department offers several undergraduate courses and runs two graduate programs, in Computer Science and in Mechatronics Engineering. EuroVA 2018 Workshop http://www.eurova.org EuroVA 2018 is the ninth international EuroVis Workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place as a *one-day workshop* on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Brno, Czech Republic. Visual Analytics is a problem-solving and sense-making technology that integrates analytical computations, visual representations, and interaction. It includes the analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, ambiguous, conflicting, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, and inferring insight. Visual Analytics aims at a synergistic collaboration of humans and computers mediated through interactive visual interfaces. As such, Visual Analytics is an interdisciplinary field of research, including aspects of visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2018 is the best place to present and discuss ideas of new methods and theories, interesting applications, designs, and studies of the use of Visual Analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a range of paper types, including technique, system, application, evaluation and theory papers in the area of Visual Analytics. Keynote Speakers We are pleased to announce that our distinguished guests Dr. Gennady Andrienko and Dr. Natalia Andrienko will be giving this year’s EuroVA keynote. Gennady and Natalia will be talking about “Sports Visual Analytics“. Gennady and Natalia are lead scientists responsible for the visual analytics research at Fraunhofer IAIS and full professors (part-time) at City University London. They co-authored monographs “Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data” (Springer, 2006) and “Visual Analytics of Movement” (Springer, 2013), more than 80 peer-reviewed journal papers, 25 book chapters, and about 100 conference papers. Call for Submissions The workshop seeks to attract innovative, fresh and creative ideas with a high potential of becoming significant contributions to the Visual Analytics community. We welcome research papers that introduce new Visual Analytics concepts, methods, or techniques, application papers that describe success stories of Visual Analytics in practice, and position papers expressing novel and potentially controversial viewpoints on Visual Analytics. [Apologies for multiple copies] Special issue on human centric visual analytics: Journal of Behaviour & Information Technology (2016 Impact Factor: 1.388) Currently, many visual analytics products and tools have been developed. However, in developing those tools and products, much attention has been paid on mining data patterns and making the hidden information visible to users. Relatively less attention has been paid on how this information should be presented for sense making decision making. This imbalance between human and computer has resulted in the lack of theories and guidelines for system design and evaluation and prevented systems and tools from being more useful in practice. To foster an incentive to address the issue and improve the situation, this specie issue targets on new visualization theories, novel design principles, analytics techniques and evaluation methodologies that are to address issues surrounding human-centric visual analytics. The primary objective is to foster focused attention in this emerging area and to serve as forum for researchers and professionals all over the world to exchange and discuss the latest advances. To be precise, the aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of human-centric visual analytics. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under review by any other journals or conferences. Papers to be submitted to this special issue must focus on the human side of visual analytics. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and papers will be selected based on their quality and relevance to the theme of this special issue. Call For Participation AVI 2018 Workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization https://sites.google.com/view/multimodalvis/ May 29, 2018 Workshop Overview Multimodal interaction offers many potential benefits for data visualization to help people stay in the flow of their visual analysis and presentation. Often, the strengths of one interaction modality can offset weaknesses of another. However, existing visualization tools and interaction techniques have mostly explored a single input modality such as mouse, touch, pen, or more recently, natural language and speech. Recent interest in deploying data visualizations on diverse display hardware including mobile, AR/VR, and large displays create an urgent need to develop natural and fluid interaction techniques that can work in these contexts. Multimodal interaction offers strong promise for such situations, but its unique challenges for data visualization have yet to be deeply investigated. This workshop will bring together researchers with expertise in visualization, interaction design, and natural user interfaces. We aim to build a community of multimodal visualization researchers, explore synergies and challenges in our research, and establish an agenda for research on multimodal interactions for visualization.
