While there are many resources on how to do visualization research, we lack discourse on handling these rejections. Aiming to address this, we are working on a research project to understand how PhD students in visualization research handle failures in the form of paper rejections. We have a two year research position available to support research concerned human factors in Explainable AI. The post is part of an innovative EPSRC/UKRI funded project THuMP: Trust in Human-Machine Partnerships. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research around the interfaces to support explainability in the context of decision making in human-machine partnerships. Tasks will involve: building an interaction infrastructure for the project; developing a prototype interface for communicating with users; designing new visual layouts for prototype systems and designing and conducting experiments with human subjects based on the use cases co-created with the project partners. He/she will work closely with members of the THuMP project. DEADLINE EXTENDED: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: VGTC Dissertation Award DEADLINE: July 31, 2020 IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC http://vgtc.org/) seeks nominations for the 2020 Best Doctoral Dissertation Award to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administered by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the IEEE VIS (http://ieeevis.org/<https://protect2.fireeye.com/v1/url?k=c1a54a6b-9d1075d2-c1a5607e-0cc47adc5f…>) conference. All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15, 2018 and August 15, 2020 are eligible for the 2020 competition. *Call for Participation:* Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop at IEEE VIS 2020 *Workshop Date:* October 25 or 26, 2020 *Workshop URL:* learningfromusersworkshop.github.io *Conference Status:* IEEE VIS has announced that they will be a fully virtual conference this year in response to the COVID outbreak. *Papers Submission deadline:* July 24, 2020 *Author notification: * August 12, 2020 The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop seeks to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on how machine learning can support visualization. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. Further, we hope to extend last year’s collaborative creation of a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction. We invite research and position papers between 5 and 10 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference style template (i.e., NOT the journal style template that full papers use). All papers accepted for presentation at the workshop will be published and linked from the workshop website. All papers should contain full author names and affiliations. These papers are considered archival; reuse of the content in a follow-up publication is only permitted in a proper journal, and any extended version must extend the original paper by at least 30%. If applicable, a link to a short video (up to 5 min. in length) may also be submitted. The papers will be juried by the organizers and selected external reviewers and will be chosen according to relevance, quality, and likelihood that they will stimulate and contribute to the discussion. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (even if only for the workshop). Papers should be submitted to the "VIS 2020 MLUI 2020 <https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>" track in PCS under the VGTC Society. The bottleneck to discovery is now our ability to analyze and make sense of heterogeneous, noisy, streaming, and often massive datasets. Extracting knowledge or insights from this abundance of data lies at the heart of 21st-century discovery, which can be used to inform decisions, coordinate activities, optimize processes, improve products and services, as well as enhance productivity and innovation across a wide range of business and scientific problems. Data science is the practice of deriving insights from data, enabled by statistical modeling, computational methods, interactive visual analysis, and domain-driven problem solving. Data science draws from methodologies developed in such fields as applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, data management, visualization, and HCI. It drives discoveries in business, economy, biology, medicine, environmental science, the physical sciences, the humanities, and social sciences, and beyond. Visualization is an integral part of data science, and essential to enable a sophisticated analysis of data. After four highly successful events, the sixth Symposium on Visualization in Data Science (VDS) will again be held on Monday, October 26th at IEEE VIS 2020 <http://ieeevis.org/year/2020/welcome>. VDS will bring together domain scientists and methods researchers (including visualization, usability and HCI, data management, statistics, machine learning, and software engineering) to discuss common interests, talk about practical issues, and identify open research problems in visualization in data science. Call for ParticipationWe encourage you to submit original work that emphasizes the role, application, and impact of visualization in data science. The workshop accepts archival full paper submissions for talks. Full Papers Paper submissions should describe the role, application, and impact of visualization in data science. We would like to particularly encourage papers that cross disciplinary boundaries and show how visualization in data science can be a catalyst for discovery. Papers will be published in our symposium proceedings and published in the IEEE Digital Library. We consider papers as work in progress and encourage authors to publish an improved version of the paper in a journal or at another venue at a later time. In addition, we plan to publish extended versions of selected papers in a special issue of IEEE TVCG.
