Below is the formal call-for-papers for TREX 2021: ------------------------------------------------- **IMPORTANT DATES** Submission Deadline: Jul 30, 2021 Author Notification: Sep 3, 2021 Camera-Ready Deadline: Sep 17, 2021 TREX 2021 Workshop: October 24 or 25, 2021 (Virtual or hybrid, depending on the IEEE VIS decision on conference format) **WORKSHOP GOALS** Visual analytics (VA) systems combine computational support and human cognitive and perceptual skills to explore and analyze data. Many of these systems have been incorporating machine learning (ML) models and algorithms to introduce some level of automation to the analytical process. However, within this relationship, there are a number of aspects that can impact the effectiveness of the human-machine teaming, including (1) people’s domain and system expertise, (2) human biases, including cognitive and perceptual biases, and (3) trust in ML models and visual representation of data. Expertise, bias, and trust are intrinsically intertwined. Additionally, visual analytics systems are used in different fields and by people from various backgrounds, with different levels of domain expertise and experience with machine learning and visual analytics tools. This variety of experience and domain expertise among human users has opened the door for new research directions and challenges in the fields of visual analytics and machine learning. Designers who fail to consider the aforementioned diversities might introduce problems to the analysis effectiveness and user experience. Furthermore, experience and domain expertise might affect user trust in visual analytics tools; although, how and why they affect trust is still an open question. Trust will eventually affect how much the users would rely on and use the tool. While users will take advantage of their prior experiences to make better decisions with the assistance of analytic support, they might carry many cognitive biases that can negatively influence their decision-making or analysis process. Recent research shows trust in and reliance on the visual analytics systems/tools as well as user strategies and biases can be directly influenced by domain and system expertise (or lack of expertise). The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to discuss and discover challenges in ML supported visual analytics tools and set the stage for future research **TOPICS OF INTEREST** 1. Trust considerations based on different areas of domain expertise (e.g., medical, security, scientific, financial domains) 2. Trust and bias considerations based on different levels of user familiarity with machine learning and visual analytics systems 3. Detecting and preventing cognitive biases in visual analytics and machine learning for users. 4. User trust in machine learning models and visual explanations of model decisions in visual analytics systems. 5. The correlation between trust, domain knowledge, and potential cognitive biases. 6. The relationship between domain expertise and trust with model transparency, human interpretability, and model understandability in visual data analysis. 7. The relationship between model interpretability, domain expertise, and trust. 8. Human-centered considerations in Human-in-the-loop visualization tools and interpretable models. **CONTRIBUTION TYPES** We are looking for and open to diverse forms of research (as listed below) within the realm of visualization and machine learning with appropriate emphasis and relation to human trust, expertise, and cognitive factors. We encourage submissions of research involving: 1. Human empirical research/findings 2. Design guidelines and surveys 3. Technique papers 4. Position papers 5. Case studies **SUBMISSION FORMAT** The workshop will accept papers with 2 to 6 pages in length, plus 2 pages of references. All submissions must be in IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template format (Download the templates here: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html) We also encourage authors to submit a short 30-second video of their work (for publication purposes) when submitting their work, if applicable. Depending on the conference format this year (i.e., virtual or hybrid), the authors of the accepted papers might be required to submit a longer video (e.g., 5 to 10 minutes) to substitute a live presentation. In such an event, we will send further instructions closer to the workshop. The submissions are made through the PCS (Precision Conference Solutions) website. At least one author from each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (please refer to the IEEE VIS Website http://ieeevis.org/ for the registration requirements). The submissions are not required to be anonymized, and may include the full name of authors, their email, and affiliation as well as an acknowledgment. **PUBLICATION** The workshop accepts papers in two formats, as seen below. Upon submitting the papers, authors are asked to determine their desired paper format: 1. Archival Short paper publication through IEEE Xplore. This means that the papers can only be published in a proper journal as an extended version with at least 30% new content. This means each paper will be published and available through IEEE Xplore with an assigned DOI and are citable. While the papers published in this format can be extended to a journal publication (with 30% new content, subject to the rules of that journal), this content cannot be re-used for a future conference submission, such as IEEE VIS, EuroVis, and CHI. 1. Short paper statements or Work-in-progress notes, which will be non-archival. This is the call for the summer round of ISS 2021. ISS 2021 Papers Summer Round: Important Dates AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Submission due: July 2, 2021 Notifications to authors: August 13, 2021 Revisions due: September 13, 2021 Final decisions to authors: September 26, 2021 Camera-ready due: October 1, 2021 ISS 2021: November 14-17 ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ACM ISS) is the premier venue for research on the design, development and use of new and emerging interactive surface technologies and interactive spaces. ACM ISS welcomes original, high-quality research and industry contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in the area of interactive surfaces, interactive spaces and novel interface technologies. Beyond our traditional scope – i.e. interactive tabletops, large displays, multi-display systems, mobile and mini devices – we also encourage contributions focused on the use of space and technology around us to bridge the gap between our digital and everyday lives, such as interactive 3D spaces, on-body sensors, interactive art or interactive architecture. We also encourage contributions focused on understanding individual and group needs related to interactive surfaces and interactive spaces, and the impact on individuals and groups of these technologies. We embrace innovations in a wide variety of areas including design, software, hardware, understanding of use, and applications or deployments of such interactive systems. ISS 2021 will be a hybrid event: Accepted papers are invited to present at the conference, and authors can choose whether or not they wish to present. Because of the evolving situation with COVID-19 and the difficulties of running a physical in-person conference, ACM ISS will allow remote participation. While we do not know what the exact format of the conference will be, we will ensure everyone can present their papers at ISS. Publication model: PACMHCI journal: Starting last year, ISS switched to a journal model of publication. This year, there will be two submission rounds: winter round and summer round, with separate deadlines. Papers published by the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (PACMHCI), https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci , accepted in both rounds will be invited for presentation at the ISS 2021 conference. The conference retains its workshop, poster, and demo tracks, which will have their own publication outlet. The call for workshops, posters, and demos will be included in the summer round. Submissions will be done through http://new.precisionconference.com<http://new.precisionconference.com/> Submissions: Submissions to PACMHCI ISS should present original and mature research work. High-quality, elaborated case studies and practice reports with generalizable findings will also be considered. Papers should be written using a template provided by PACMHCI, https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci/submission-templates . Submissions should be anonymized. Primarily, this means that submissions must remove all author and institutional information from the title and header area of the first page. Author information should also be removed from submitted supplementary materials, in particular, videos. Submissions that do not do so may be rejected without review. Furthermore, all references must remain intact. If you previously published a paper and your current submission builds on that work, the complete reference with the author's name must appear in the references. Authors must refer to their previous work in the third person (e.g., “We build on prior work by Smith et al. [X] but generalize their algorithm to new settings.”) and avoid blank references (e.g., “12. REMOVED FOR REVIEWING”). Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper (for example, in an Acknowledgements section), while encouraged, is left to the authors’ discretion. Paper Length: We recommend a page length in the new format of between 5-15 pages + any additional pages for references. There are no length restrictions on papers, however, reviewers will put the length of any submitted paper in context of the provided contribution when making decisions about acceptance and revisions. Revisions: The associate editors will make decisions for any submitted papers as either accepted, minor revisions, major revisions, or rejected. These notifications will then be sent to the authors. If the initial decision is "minor revisions", the authors will revise their paper within this round. After the revised paper is submitted, the final decisions will be sent to the authors a few weeks later. If the initial decision is "major revisions", the paper must be submitted in the next round to guarantee treatment as a revision, meaning that the same primary and secondary board members will be assigned to continuously handle the submission. Submissions requiring "major revisions" will not submit their revision within the current round, to allow extra time for any significant new work, such as conducting a new evaluation, before acceptance is possible. This means that papers accepted in the winter or summer round will be able to present their paper at ISS of the same year. A paper submitted in the summer round that received a major revision decision will not be presented at ISS of the same year but might be presented at ISS of the next year if accepted in the following winter round. PEARLS Data Exploration Tool

PEARLS DATA EXPLORATION https://github.com/VijayrajS/PEARLS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh8wPMyOxVM The PEARLS data visualization provides a conceptual visualization of high-dimensional data clusters, proposed by Mr. Nahil Jain in 2012. The algorithm aims to extract meaningful information from large quantities of data by clustering them using some already existing clustering algorithm, re-clustering the clusters to form 'pearls,' which are then assigned a particular shape and placed in the 3D space centroid of the cluster. The web app has the ReactJS library on the frontend and python code on the backend (hosted on the backend). Click here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh8wPMyOxVM> to see the demo video. The PEARLS system is available for use and testing, and the code is made available for further development. Issues and further work · Dealing with the file system: The system is stateless, with files in the corresponding user's folder, but the user cannot access previously uploaded files. One can add an API call to do the same and necessary additions to the frontend. · Vulnerabilities and security concerns: The toolkit works fine as it is in a local context. But, a web app is for server deployment, and security is the main concern (especially for valuable datasets, etc.). Basic JWT token security needs fixing of flaws in further iterations. · Better testing strategies for the entire toolkit: There are no proper test cases to test the app and the correctness of the backend. Implement a testing strategy (and a CI/CD pipeline-like setup if possible). · Graceful error handling for any corner cases found: Due to the lack of a strategy, some bugs in the system might return some generic errors. Detect such errors with more informative messages. · Better parallel-coordinates plot component: The frontend uses the react-vis<https://uber.github.io/react-vis/> for displaying a parallel coordinates plot for a given cluster. The framework seems to be rendering the plots but without labels. For now, a workaround is there, but a custom component for the same would be favorable. · Issues with the 3D plots: Users can select a pearl by using a dropdown menu. Previously, a hover-to-select pearl is with three.js. However, this was extremely slow. Identifying the bottlenecks and re-introducing this feature would be favorable. The work may involve prototyping, defining metrics, benchmark evaluation, and experimental comparison with state-of-the-art approaches in testbeds or real-world pilots, possibly with operational data. While ACSAC has always solicited work on applied security, by having it as a hard topic theme we hope to put greater emphasis on deployability and impactfulness. We believe that this is an important initiative that can help the entire community increase its reputation, and make research in the security field proceed faster by taking advantage of systems previously built by other researchers. Accepted papers with artifacts that have been tested by the evaluation committee will receive a special mention during the conference and on the ACSAC web page, an ACM Artifacts Evaluated badge on their papers, and a Distinguished Paper Award.
