Call for Nominations and Voter Registration IEEE VIS Executive and Steering Committee Elections

As part of IEEE VIS’s ongoing unification effort <http://ieeevis.org/year/2020/blog/things-are-changing-2021>, starting in 2021 some of the positions on both the VIS Executive Committee (VEC) and VIS Steering Committee (VSC) will be directly elected by the VIS community. These elections give the community a voice in governance, they allow members to grow into positions of authority, and they hopefully will ensure a diverse representation across all of VIS. Eligible members of the VIS community can register to vote in this year's election and nominate candidates for positions on the VEC or VSC. Multiple nominations and self-nominations are permitted. Anyone who has participated in the VIS conference in some capacity in three out of the five most recent years is eligible, and this includes intention to participate in 2021. VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will take place on October 27, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/>, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS. VizSec program will be presented in an online format with virtual presentations. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user-assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, penetration testing, and other related research topics. We are soliciting Technical (Full), Short, and Position Papers. Technical Papers Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Machine learning & explainable AI for cybersecurity - Adversarial machine learning visualization - Adversarial visualization - Visual analytics for cybersecurity - Data protection & privacy - Blockchain performance & security - Cybersecurity in critical infrastructure - Collaborative visualization for cybersecurity & provenance - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security - Training & education Submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are also particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. Short Papers Short papers describing initial research results, concise research contributions or incremental work on the above topics, even including practical applications of security visualization, are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Position Papers Position papers focus on topics needing or calling for discussion or reconsideration of forgotten topics relevant for the VizSec community. They should report a clear position on the target topic and should also suggest a proposal or actions regarding the target topic. They should stimulate imaginative and hypothesis-driven research. In particular, we encourage submissions both from researchers inside the visualization community and outside, such as researchers and practitioners from pure cybersecurity domains who currently do not broadly employ visualization in their work. Posters Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. In line with the full conference, the presentation of posters will take place online. There will be 1-2 dedicated poster sessions in which poster authors can virtually meet and discuss their work with conference participants. An additional web presence of posters will replace the traditional physical installation of poster boards. More concrete details will follow soon. Awards There will be an award for the best full paper from the accepted program. This award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality as determined by the program committee. Key elements of the selection process include whether papers include evaluation, repeatable results, and open-source data or software. Authors of the best paper will be invited for submission to Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. There will also be an award for Best Poster. This award will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly present their work to the audience. The award will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. Submissions The VizSec 2021 Proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formatted using the IEEE VGTC conference proceedings template that can be found at: https://tc.computer.org/vgtc/publications/conference/ VizSec full papers are limited to 9 pages of content plus an additional 2 pages of references. Papers may be shorter than this but must make a similar contribution to a longer paper. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Short papers should be at most 4 pages plus 1 page of references. Position papers may be up to 4 total pages including references. Posters should be 2 page abstracts. Presenters are also encouraged to submit an accompanying video or other supplementary materials by following the IEEE VIS formatting guidelines. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. We encourage discussions of challenges or limitations in today's methods and areas of potential new research topics. We are also interested in application discussions that focus on the physical, life or social sciences, engineering, or commerce, for example, or related to the process of visual computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations. Extended Abstracts / Posters The purpose of this track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. The poster track will be managed by the co-chair team and the International Programme Committee (IPC). We solicit poster submissions in the form of an extended abstract of at most 2 pages (with an additional page allowed for references only). Posters will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process. Accepted posters, size A1 recommended, will be presented at the poster viewing session of the conference. In addition to directly submitted posters, some submissions to the full, short and viewpoint paper tracks, that are not accepted for publication but are deemed suitable, will be offered an opportunity to be presented as posters. Such submissions will not require an additional review process. Traditionally, the materials in a poster/sketch can be reused later by the original authors for a more extensive publication (i.e., a full paper) with more detailed content and mature results. DataVis Activities to Facilitate Learning, Reflecting, Discussing, and Designing

Dear All, Help us spread the news! We invite submissions for our second workshop on VisActivities-DataVis Activities to Facilitate Learning, Reflecting, Discussing, and Designing (Oct. 24/29, 2021, Virtual/New Orleans, LA, USA): https://visactivities.github.io MOTIVATION: Workshops, classes, or collaborations with domain experts often include hands-on data visualization activities that involve analog or digital tools and materials as well as more or less well-defined protocols. Recent years have seen the emergence of such data visualization activities in different contexts, including education, visualization design, activism, self-reflection, and interdisciplinary collaboration: for example, sketching aids designers to consider alternative ideas; ,manipulating tokens help students conceptualize quantities for data visualization; user interviews and discussions help developers understand requirements manipulating data help activist better understand social issues, etc. While many of these activities would naturally take place in a group setting, due to the social distancing measures during the Covid-19 more and more of these activities are now happening online. Switching from co-located and synchronous activities to remote and sometimes asynchronous activities, changed the way we teach or design data visualization. This required teachers and designers to reinvent activities, adapt materials to be suitable for online delivery, reorganise procedures, replace physical tools with virtual, rethink collaboration and engagement, restructure or invent new activities. At the same time, moving activities online opens new possibilities to involve people across the world and in turn increase diversity and access. The goals of this workshop include: Building an understanding and to synthesize protocols and materials used to lead data vis activities (online and offline), to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators from within and outside of the visualization community, brainstorm, design, experience, and try novel activities, and to discuss issues around goals, methods, audiences, materials, and evaluation for teaching data visualization. And also exchanges about the best teaching moment of the year. SUBMISSION: All submissions are submitted using PCS: https://new.precisionconference.com The workshop accepts 2 types of submissions: Workshop paper, Lightning Talks * Workshop papers, refer to classical research papers with a scientific contribution in theory, reflection, application, evaluation, design, or implementation. Page length will be limited to 4 pages TVCG/VIS style. Contributions can include: visualization activities, online platforms for activities, learning material, learning goals, taxonomies, visualization guidelines, critical reflections on conducting visualization activities (teaching experience), evaluation strategies for activities, teaching approaches, ethical and critical considerations on activities and teaching. Reports on activities should include procedures, reports and experiences about one or many teaching activities, including a protocol and material of activities including results and reflections. Materials should include new teaching material that supports teaching in general and which is ready for application (slides, visualizations of schema/diagrams/design spaces, cheat sheets, teaching tools), or targeted to support specific activities (physical visualization, sketching templates, programming tutorials). We encourage evaluations for both activities and materials. * Lightning Talks, refer to fast 2 minute presentations of anecdotes, experiences and best experience specifically regarding online vis activities. These can discuss best teaching moments, activity reports, materials, tools, set-up etc in a brief concise way (4-5 slides) with the possibility of including additional material on the workshop website. Submission page length will be limited to 1 page briefly outlining the experience (only the abstract and a picture are mandatory) with any additional material added as an appendix. Lightning talks could also be picked for the Ice breaker: Fast forward testimony of best (teaching) moment of the year. The goal of these (casual) talks is to inspire, exchange nuggets of knowledge, provoke, trigger conversation and have fun. Beyond our traditional scope – i.e. interactive tabletops, large displays, multi-display systems, mobile and mini devices – we also encourage contributions focused on the use of space and technology around us to bridge the gap between our digital and everyday lives, such as interactive 3D spaces, on-body sensors, interactive art or interactive architecture. We also encourage contributions focused on understanding individual and group needs related to interactive surfaces and interactive spaces, and the impact on individuals and groups of these technologies. We embrace innovations in a wide variety of areas including design, software, hardware, understanding of use, and applications or deployments of such interactive systems. ISS 2021 will be a hybrid event: Accepted papers are invited to present at the conference, and authors can choose whether or not they wish to present. Because of the evolving situation with COVID-19 and the difficulties of running a physical in-person conference, ACM ISS will allow remote participation. While we do not know what the exact format of the conference will be, we will ensure everyone can present their papers at ISS. Publication model: PACMHCI journal: Starting last year, ISS switched to a journal model of publication. This year, there will be two submission rounds: winter round and summer round, with separate deadlines. Papers published by the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (PACMHCI), https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci , accepted in both rounds will be invited for presentation at the ISS 2021 conference. The conference retains its workshop, poster, and demo tracks, which will have their own publication outlet. The call for workshops, posters, and demos will be included in the summer round. Submissions will be done through http://new.precisionconference.com<http://new.precisionconference.com/> Submissions: Submissions to PACMHCI ISS should present original and mature research work. High-quality, elaborated case studies and practice reports with generalizable findings will also be considered. Papers should be written using a template provided by PACMHCI, https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci/submission-templates . Submissions should be anonymized. Primarily, this means that submissions must remove all author and institutional information from the title and header area of the first page. Author information should also be removed from submitted supplementary materials, in particular, videos. Submissions that do not do so may be rejected without review. Furthermore, all references must remain intact. If you previously published a paper and your current submission builds on that work, the complete reference with the author's name must appear in the references. Authors must refer to their previous work in the third person (e.g., “We build on prior work by Smith et al. [X] but generalize their algorithm to new settings.”) and avoid blank references (e.g., “12. REMOVED FOR REVIEWING”). Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper (for example, in an Acknowledgements section), while encouraged, is left to the authors’ discretion. Paper Length: We recommend a page length in the new format of between 5-15 pages + any additional pages for references. There are no length restrictions on papers, however, reviewers will put the length of any submitted paper in context of the provided contribution when making decisions about acceptance and revisions. Revisions: The associate editors will make decisions for any submitted papers as either accepted, minor revisions, major revisions, or rejected. These notifications will then be sent to the authors. If the initial decision is "minor revisions", the authors will revise their paper within this round. After the revised paper is submitted, the final decisions will be sent to the authors a few weeks later. If the initial decision is "major revisions", the paper must be submitted in the next round to guarantee treatment as a revision, meaning that the same primary and secondary board members will be assigned to continuously handle the submission. Submissions requiring "major revisions" will not submit their revision within the current round, to allow extra time for any significant new work, such as conducting a new evaluation, before acceptance is possible. This means that papers accepted in the winter or summer round will be able to present their paper at ISS of the same year. A paper submitted in the summer round that received a major revision decision will not be presented at ISS of the same year but might be presented at ISS of the next year if accepted in the following winter round. VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will take place on October 27, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/>, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS. VizSec program will be presented in an online format with virtual presentations. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user-assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, penetration testing, and other related research topics. We are soliciting Technical (Full), Short, and Position Papers. Technical Papers Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Machine learning & explainable AI for cybersecurity - Adversarial machine learning visualization - Adversarial visualization - Visual analytics for cybersecurity - Data protection & privacy - Blockchain performance & security - Cybersecurity in critical infrastructure - Collaborative visualization for cybersecurity & provenance - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security - Training & education Submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are also particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. Short Papers Short papers describing initial research results, concise research contributions or incremental work on the above topics, even including practical applications of security visualization, are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Position Papers Position papers focus on topics needing or calling for discussion or reconsideration of forgotten topics relevant for the VizSec community. They should report a clear position on the target topic and should also suggest a proposal or actions regarding the target topic. They should stimulate imaginative and hypothesis-driven research. In particular, we encourage submissions both from researchers inside the visualization community and outside, such as researchers and practitioners from pure cybersecurity domains who currently do not broadly employ visualization in their work. Posters Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. In line with the full conference, the presentation of posters will take place online. There will be 1-2 dedicated poster sessions in which poster authors can virtually meet and discuss their work with conference participants. An additional web presence of posters will replace the traditional physical installation of poster boards. More concrete details will follow soon. Awards There will be an award for the best full paper from the accepted program. This award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality as determined by the program committee. Key elements of the selection process include whether papers include evaluation, repeatable results, and open-source data or software. Authors of the best paper will be invited for submission to Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. There will also be an award for Best Poster. This award will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly present their work to the audience. The award will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. Submissions The VizSec 2021 Proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formatted using the IEEE VGTC conference proceedings template that can be found at: https://tc.computer.org/vgtc/publications/conference/ VizSec full papers are limited to 9 pages of content plus an additional 2 pages of references. Papers may be shorter than this but must make a similar contribution to a longer paper. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Short papers should be at most 4 pages plus 1 page of references. Position papers may be up to 4 total pages including references. Posters should be 2 page abstracts. Presenters are also encouraged to submit an accompanying video or other supplementary materials by following the IEEE VIS formatting guidelines. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Call For Participation: Workshop on Provenance and Visualization (ProvViz) 21 July 2021 (Part of the Provenance Week 2021 - fully online) https://iitdbgroup.github.io/ProvenanceWeek2021/provviz.html The aim of this workshop is to encourage exchange between the provenance and visualization communities. During the workshop, we will introduce the latest developments in provenance analysis from the visualization community, and try to address research challenges that are relevant for both communities. It is part of Provenance Week 2021, which is a fully online event. All Provenance Week 2021 participants are welcome to join. There is an option to submit a one-page abstract before the workshop if you would like to propose a topic or research question to be discussed at the workshop. - Abstract Submission deadline: June 8th, 2021 - Author Notification: June 22nd, 2021 The LNCS format is recommended and please select the "ProvViz" track (which will be set up soon) when submitting the abstract in EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pw2021) The workshop lasts half a day (morning of 21 July 2021), and will start with a keynote by Bill Howe (please see the information below). After that, participants will form groups to discuss a particular area or research question based on their shared interest. Finally, each group will report back their discussion results and collaboration plan after the workshop. Keynote from Bill Howe, University of Washington Bio: Bill Howe is Associate Professor in the Information School and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in data management, machine learning, and visualization, particularly as applied in the physical and social sciences. As Founding Associate Director of the UW eScience Institute, Dr. Howe played a leadership role in the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment program through a $32.8 million grant awarded jointly to UW, NYU, and UC Berkeley, and founded UW’s Data Science for Social Good Program. With support from the MacArthur Foundation, NSF, and Microsoft, Howe directs UW’s participation in the Cascadia Urban Analytics Cooperative. He founded the UW Data Science Masters Degree, serving as its inaugural Program Chair, and created a first MOOC on data science that attracted over 200,000 students. His research has been featured in the Economist and Nature News, and he has authored award-winning papers in conferences across data management, machine learning, and visualization.
