Our keynote speaker (Alberto Cairo,University of Miami) will open the conferences on Tuesday morning and our capstone speaker (Barbara Tversky, Stanford University & Columbia University) will close the meeting on Friday. Additionally, the LDAV Symposium occurs on Sunday and Monday before the conferences, as do a number of other workshops and tutorials. Call for Participation: Provenance for Sensemaking Workshop (Half Day, Part of IEEE VIS 2014) http://www.cs.mdx.ac.uk/prov4sense/ November 2014, Paris, France === Introduction === During complex analysis tasks, it can be valuable to maintain a history of the data and reasoning involved - referred to as ‘provenance’ information. Provenance information can be a resource for "reﬂection-in-action" during analysis, supporting collaboration between analysts, and reporting to decision makers. It can also act as a resource after the event, supporting the interpretation of claims, audit, accountability and training. There has been considerable work on capturing and visualizing of ‘data provenance’, which focuses on data collection and computation, and ‘analytic provenance’, which captures the interactive data exploration and reasoning process. However, there is limited work of utilizing such provenance information to support sensemaking, in terms of improving efficacy and avoiding pitfalls such as issues of data quality and human bias. This workshop aims to bring together researchers involved in visual analytics and various aspects of sensemaking to consider emerging positions, questions, and ﬁndings related to the capture, processing, representation and use of provenance information to support complex sensemaking tasks. The emphasis is on discussion and collaboration, with a goal of collaboratively producing a paper describing the state-of-the-art of provenance for sensemaking following the workshop. These records are an invaluable data source for clinical research and improvement of clinical quality, as they provide longitudinal health information about patient populations. The use of EHR databases could be dramatically improved if easy-to-use interfaces allowed clinical researchers and quality improvement analysts to explore complex patterns in order to build and test hypotheses regarding the benefits, risks, and appropriateness of treatments or medication regimens. Novel strategies in information visualization and visual analytics are needed. The interest in this topic is growing at a very rapid pace and is interdisciplinary by nature, both in term of field (medicine and computer science) but also research environment (academic research as well as industry and government agencies). Because of the European location of the conference, we have a unique opportunity to create bridges and explore new collaborations between groups that would not meet otherwise. In spite of substantial advance in various visualization techniques, our understanding on how well these advanced visualizations are comprehended by users, or what we call “visualization literacy,” is quite limited. As a sequel to the visualization literacy workshop in EuroVis (https://www.kth.se/profile/178785/page/eurovis-2014-workshop-towards-visual…) this workshop will investigate the visualization literacy problem. Unlike other workshops that promote discussion around position papers, this workshop will be based on actual participation of creating visualization literacy measures. The organizers will prepare a web-based platform, and participants can actually create questions to test visualization literacy, solve others’ questions, and discuss around questions. We believe that such hands-on experiences will greatly promote the quality of discussion as well as come closer to having a tangible visualization literacy measuring tool. IEEE VIS 2014 http://ieeevis.org Call For Papers: International Workshop on 3DVis: Does 3D really make sense for Data Visualization? https://sites.google.com/site/3dvisieeevis2014/ ** This half-a-day workshop is a satellite event of the IEEE VIS 2014 conference November 2015, Paris, France ** The aim of this workshop is to discuss 3D display and 3D user interfaces for scientific and information visualization and Visual Analytics. We aim to analyze the state of the art in 3D visualization and associated interaction; and to review how 3D displays and user interfaces match human perceptual, cognitive and motor capabilities. On one hand, 3D technologies and the recent introduction of low-cost virtual and augmented reality hardware provide additional options for display and interaction, which broadens the space of potential solutions considerably, and pave the way towards a deeper exploration of the design space for 3D visualization. Better consistency in terms of dimensions between the visualization and interaction may also improve the immersion and navigation in huge amounts of data. On the other hand, the experimental results from studies that investigate the differences between 2D and 3D visualization interfaces provide no real evidence for the claimed benefits of 3D technologies.Thus, the current body of literature provides at best inconclusive guidance on the benefits of 3D approaches. Moreover, a deep consideration of human abilities and capabilities identifies a potential mismatch with full 3D user interfaces. Yet, there may be a bias in the evaluations, as the prevalent visualization and interaction techniques in all areas of visualization are based on non-immersive technologies. Indeed, this is the heart of the 2D vs. 3D debate. In this workshop, we would like to present evidence for both sides of this debate, and also provide directions for future work. We solicit research papers, technical notes, state of the art, position papers and demonstrations within the scope of 3D Visualization: • Immersive visualization, navigation and interaction • 3D for Scientific visualization, Information visualization, Visual analytics • VR, AR and MR for 3D visualization • Key factors and issues in 3D Data Visualization • User evaluation of 2D vs 3D The workshop proceedings will consist of all accepted papers and will be indexed through the IEEE Digital Library.
