The Charlotte Visualization Center at UNC Charlotte invites applications for one or possibly two post-doctoral fellowships for interdisciplinary research in visual analytics. Areas of work include mobile visual analytics and interactive systems using novel interfaces. The successful candidate will work closely with a team led by Professor William Ribarsky and his colleagues of the VisCenter. The VisCenter is seeking a highly talented and committed individual with a demonstrated ability to work well with minimal supervision in a multi-disciplinary research environment. The successful candidate will contribute to leading research in visual analytics, considering some of the fundamental problems and most challenging applications facing the field today, and have the opportunity to develop his/her research, publication, and presentation skills under mentorship of the faculty investigators. Non-Technical Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills are mandatory. A willingness to collaborate in a highly diverse, multi- disciplinary environment is also essential. Contextually, the availability of a wide spectrum of high-level data integration tools - such as (enterprise) mash-up platforms - offered to developers (and to end users) several means for the integration of such data, enabling novel applications and business scenario. The usage of the Web as a common publication, mediation, aggregation and consumption platform decreased the existing gap between Web and Enterprise applications, which often leverage common data integration methodologies and tools. Moreover, the nature and the abundance of such structured data shifts the nature of user interactions, where models based on navigation of documents are replaced by paradigms that leverage the exploration of object repositories; in such a context, providing a satisfactory user experience proved to be a challenging task for application developers. In addition, as the richness and value of data also increases, Web and Enterprise applications must provide users with visualizations and interaction paradigms that leverage properties such as the underlying data relationships, source type, provenance, and quality. As a consequence, a deeper understanding of data integration, visualization and user interaction issues is becoming more and more compelling in applications design and development. We believe that, in order to tackle the new challenges provided by a Web of Data, data integration, visualization and user interaction methodologies and tools need to be revised to effectively manage the design and the interaction application with information. The aim of the DATAVIEW workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the fields of Software Engineering, Web engineering, Semantic Web, Databases, (multimedia) Information Retrieval and data visualization. The main goal is to explore the feasibility of using and combining different approaches to create effective Web and Enterprise applications where the integration, visualization and interaction with data is a main concern, as well as to identify additional requirements needed in order to apply these methods and techniques to existing design and development environments. IMPORTANT DATES Submission: August 1, 2010 Notification: September 1, 2010 Camera-ready: October 1, 2010 GENERAL INFORMATION IDAMAP-2010, a colloquium on intelligent data analysis in biomedicine and pharmacology, will be held in conjunction with the 2010 Annual Symposium of the American Medical informatics Association. The IDAMAP series is devoted to computational methods for data analysis in medicine, biology and pharmacology that present results of analysis in the form communicable to domain experts and that somehow exploit knowledge of the problem domain. Such knowledge may be available at different stages of the data-analysis and model-building process. Typical methods include data visualization, data exploration, machine learning, and data mining. Gathering in an informal setting, colloquium participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss selected technical topics in an atmosphere which fosters the active exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners. The colloquium is intended to be a genuinely interactive event and not a mini-conference, thus ample time will be allotted for general discussion. A student challenge on data integration will be organized. Author of the best solution will be invited to present the work at the workshop. A selection of revised and expanded IDAMAP 2010 papers will appear in the Methods of Information in Medicine journal. TOPICS In the colloquium, the attention will be given to methodological issues of intelligent data analysis and on specific applications in biomedicine and pharmacology. In terms of methodology, topics include, but are not limited to: - data mining and machine learning techniques for supervised and unsupervised learning problems, - exploiting domain knowledge in learning and data analysis, - data visualization and exploration, - analysis of large data sets and relational data mining, - knowledge management and its integration with intelligent data analysis techniques, and - integration of intelligent data analysis techniques within biomedical information systems. A paper submitted to the colloquium is expected to show a selected methodology can help to solve relevant problems in medicine, and would typically address the following issues: - What is the medical or clinical problem addressed? - Was any prior knowledge available? How was this used in the data analysis or interpretation of results? - How is/can the newly discovered knowledge put into use? Contributions that discuss particular applications of intelligent data analysis techniques are invited, and can for example cover analysis of medical and health-care data, data coming from clinical bioinformatics data bases (like microarray data and DNA sequence analysis), analysis of pharmacological data, drug design, drug testing, and outcomes analysis. PROBLEM OWNERS In addition to regular scientific contributions, we welcome descriptions of problems or data sets that could potentially benefit from an analysis through Intelligent Data Analysis or Data Mining. Problem descriptions must be submitted as abstracts and will be presented at the workshop. They must briefly introduce the problem and provide an overview of the main objectives of the analysis. After the presentations, ample time will be reserved for discussion. DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS We also invite developers of data analysis tools to send an abstract with the description of their tool, and give a demonstration during a special demo session on data analysis tools at the colloquium. The abstract should describe the underlying methodology of the tool and sketch the potential for application in the field of intelligent data analysis in biomedicine. Preferably, abstracts on data analysis tools should also briefly describe a case study where the tool was used. PROGRAM The scientific program of the colloquium will consist of presentations of accepted scientific papers, an invited presentation, and demonstrations of data analysis tools and problem descriptions. Ample time will be allotted for informal discussion among the participants. SUBMISSION & PUBLICATION OF ACCEPTED PAPERS IDAMAP invites submissions of either short papers (2 pages, up to 1500 words, leading to a short presentation at the meeting) or full papers (up to 6 pages/4500 words, leading to a long presentation at the meeting). Data analysis tools and description of problems should be submitted as abstracts (1 page, up to 750 words). Papers should be written in English. CALL FOR PROPOSALS to host the 5th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology The Media Art Histories Board invites applications to host the 5th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology. This international conference series, which was inaugurated in 2005 in Banff, Canada, has since been held in several international venues including Berlin in 2007, Melbourne in 2009 and will be held in Liverpool in 2011. The conference series aims to engage a growing community of scholars from a range of disciplines including art history, contemporary art practice, art theory, history of science, history of technology, science and technology studies, media studies, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology, architecture theory, music history, information sciences, image science and visual studies among others, to develop and share new research and scholarship in the intersecting fields of the histories of media art, science and technology. The host of the next conference in 2013 will have the opportunity to continue to build on the impressive history of the conference series. MISSION *Recognizing the increasing significance of media art for our culture, the conference series on the Histories of Media Art will discuss the history of media arts within the interdisciplinary and inter-cultural contexts of the histories of the arts. The INRIA GRAVITÉ project in collaboration with LaBRI (CNRS) is offering a one-year post-doc position. The successful candidate will be involved in an advanced research project dedicated to the visual and interactive exploration of semantic networks. The project takes place within the ANR TANGUY project headed by Thalès Communications and in collaboration with Xerox (XRCE Grenoble) and the law firm FIDAL. The project aims at designing a methodology to support the incremental construction and easy use of semantic networks. The development of a (prototype) system should help law experts to deal with large document collections from which potential facts have to be identified, extracted, organized and ultimately validated or annotated. Starting from valid pieces of information extracted from text document (Xerox expertise), our goal is to offer adapted mechanisms to visualize, navigate and annotate all this information. The construction of a network of facts should follow from semantic proximity between pieces of information or from users’ knowledge. The awarded candidate will be involved in multi-disciplinary and fundamental research residing mainly at the crossings of computational linguistic, artificial intelligence and information visualization. Several directions of research may be followed depending on the goals and competences of the selected candidate. Prior knowledge in (some) of the following areas shall be positively considered: network science, graph theory, graph drawing, graph visualization. We seek for candidates with a (strong) programming experience in C++. Past experience using the Tulip (graph visualization) platform is a plus. Preference will also be given to candidates that have demonstrated their abilities to carry out research at top international standards and to publish their results in international journals. Jacques Bertin passed away

Dear Colleagues, I have the regret to inform you that Jacques Bertin, author of the well-known book "Semiology of Graphics" and pioneer of the domain of visual representation of abstract data for exploration passed away on May 3rd at the age of 92. Jacques Bertin was a cartographer by training, but he expanded the field and created and improved a very large number of graphical representations of abstract data. Assistant/Associate Professor in HCI and Visualization CyberInfrastructure Division of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech Position Description The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) is a world-class research institute in the life sciences developed in a transdisciplinary team research model. The Institute's mission is to solve some of society's most important problems in the life sciences through transdisciplinary research and education. To support the growth of its transdisciplinary research portfolio, VBI's CyberInfrastructure Division is looking for an Assistant or Associate Professor to lead Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Visualization efforts. The Assistant/Associate Professor will be responsible for developing and conducting a vigorous, extramurally funded research program related to HCI and Visualization for life sciences; the securing of grant and contract funding for the research program; integrating HCI/Visualization practices throughout appropriate CyberInfrastructure program areas (infectious disease, and translational informatics); responsible for providing leadership, mentoring, and developing a team of researchers and students engaged in HCI/Visualization/Life Science research; responsible for defining, designing, and evaluating innovative user interface solutions using a transdisciplinary scientific approach for projects with HCI/Visualization needs; and pursuing professional activities as expected from a professional computer scientist. Qualifications Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Human Factors or other discipline closely related to HCI; demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrated capability of working closely with software engineers and life scientists (researchers, clinicians or epidemiologists) on user interface design and development efforts; demonstrated experience in interfacing and collaborating with the scientific community; capable of working in a team environment and a strong inclination for trans-disciplinary science; and possesses creativity, independence, and selfmotivation with good communication skills. Preferences will be given to candidates having experience in both basic HCI/Visualization research and applying HCI to real-world bioinformatics software development environments, as well as evidence of successful grant writing experience.
