IEEE CG&A seeks submissions for its upcoming Sep 2025 special issue on Breakthroughs, Challenges, and Opportunities in Biological Data Visualization, with a submission deadline of Feb 21st, 2025. https://www.computer.org/digital-library/magazines/cg/cfp-biological-data-v… The rapidly expanding data generated by advanced methods in biology is creating enormous challenges at the interface between humans and biological data that can be represented and analyzed visually. To meet these challenges, a blend of methodology from the visualization, bioinformatics and biology domains is required. This methodology encompasses perception and design knowledge, algorithm design, techniques for analyzing and visualizing big data, statistics, and specific domain knowledge for different application problems. Powerful and integrative visualization methods are necessary, as well as methods for visually communicating the outcome of computational analytical methods and findings. This special issue aims to highlight new challenges in biological data visualization (BioVis), and state-of-the-art solutions created by the vibrant BioVis community. We invite contributions on all aspects of data visualization in biology, from molecular to cell, tissue, organism and population biology. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Genome and sequence data visualization, including genomic variation data, 3D and 4D genome visualization, and chromosome interaction maps * Multivariate omics data visualization (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) * Phylogenetic data visualization, as well as biological networks and pathways * Neurobiology and developmental biology visualization, biological atlases and metadata * Macromolecular structures (e.g., protein or RNA structures) visualization * Biological image data, such as microscopy data visualization * Visualization for the modeling and simulation of biological systems * Biovis systems and software frameworks, and integrating visualization and machine learning for biological analysis * Biological workflows or collaborative processes, processes for interdisciplinary collaboration between biology and visualization, and usability of visualization by biologists, including communicating uncertainty * New challenges, breakthroughs, and opportunities in biological data visualization ________________________________ Submission Guidelines For author information and guidelines on submission criteria, visit the Author’s Information page. OVERVIEW The desire to replicate reality has been a long-lasting human endeavor. Images of the earliest cave drawings communicated about the important aspects of life at the beginning of human civilization. Paintings and sculptures aspired to capture the natural proportions and beauty of human form as well as spirit, while cinema made the static images move and accompany them with sound. In the late 20th century, the unprecedented speed in digital developments enabled the creation of three-dimensional worlds, which did not only surround the user, but also respond to their actions. Today, we are witnessing a rapid rise of artificial intelligence, conversational agents, and creative machines, the way reality is perceived is going through an unprecedented transformation. While offering immense creative possibilities, those tools also pose significant challenges by blurring the lines between fact and fiction, truth and fabrication. This digital storm is reshaping our relationship to facts and history, confronting our definition of reality, plausibility and realism. TOPICS AND SCOPE As part IEEE VR 2025, we are delighted to invite you to the first edition of the ‘XR Gallery’ fostering bridges between people from the XR and Art communities through this art exhibition, titled "Edges of Reality: Questioning the Truthfulness of our Digital Realities". We aim to provoke creative thought and discussion between artists and researchers around the question of authenticity and truthfulness of digital experiences. By bridging the gap between the XR research community and the art world, we hope to inspire innovative perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between technology and reality. Some of the potential questions which can be explored in this respect are: - How do scientific and technological advances confront and alter our common senses, changing our own perception of reality and of what is possible to imagine - Does my behavior change in a plausible simulated environment? - Can a software that behaves indistinguishably from a human be considered truly real? - What distinguishes our actual self from a simulated self constructed from our digital traces? - What would be the implication of a faithful simulation of an ancestor based solely on their private diaries or literary correspondence? - ... The exhibition will primarily focus on interactive XR art installations, while also welcoming non-XR art installations, such as performances or any other digital media questioning the nature of reality in our increasingly digital world. Accepted submission will be showcased at the dedicated space for the XR Gallery during the entire duration of the IEEEVR conference, excluding the days of workshops *(March 8-12 2025, Saint-Malo, France)*. Call for Papers – Digital Wellbeing for Teens: Designing Educational Systems Special issue of Interaction Design & Architecture(s) Journal (IxD&A) https://ixdea.org/digital-wellbeing-for-teens-designing-educational-systems/ ———— Overview Recently, researchers have been exploring the unexpected issues arising from the excessive use of personal devices and social media apps, particularly as companies adopt “attention-capture” tactics like guilty-pleasure recommendations and automatic content playback. These strategies exploit users’ psychological vulnerabilities to increase advertising revenue, resulting in significant impacts on users’ perceived agency and often leading to a sense of losing control over their technology use. This has led to the emergence of a new focus on “digital wellbeing,” studied in fields such as Human Computer Interaction and psychology. Traditional approaches by practitioners and researchers to tackle these issues involve developing Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs), such as mobile apps and browser extensions, that help users track their usage patterns and implement interventions like timers and lock-out mechanisms to regulate device use. However, both researchers and users are beginning to emphasize that achieving digital wellbeing requires more than just self-monitoring strategies; it is a journey of personal growth that necessitates education. Topics of Interest The goal of this special issue is to discuss ongoing research and ideas at the intersection of digital wellbeing and education. It aims to foster the development of strategies and interactive tools that mentor users, especially children and teenagers, towards a more meaningful and conscious use of technology. This can be accomplished in various ways, such as by designing new Digital Self-Control Tools with educational components, developing serious games, or creating collaborative platforms to introduce and support digital wellbeing learning in schools. Topics of interest include, but not limited to: • participatory and co-design of digital wellbeing systems; • tools and strategies to teach digital wellbeing at school; • strategies and tools for measuring students’ digital wellbeing; • novel DSCTs that include educational aspects; • gamification strategies for digital wellbeing; • ethical, social, and political factors. Submission All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. The manuscripts should be submitted anonymized either in .doc or in .pdf format. All papers will be blindly peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. In this PhD project, several teams (clinical centers, serious game developers, and academic institutions) combine their multidisciplinary skills to create and deploy a solution for rehabilitating patients having visual impairments by offering them training scenarios using a virtual reality (VR) setup. As PhD candidate in this project, you will conduct independent high-quality research resulting in a doctoral dissertation. Your research will focus on developing a gamified VR application to collect eye tracking data to measure and treat hemianopsia (partial blindness). Additionally, you will design a Visual Analytics solution for exploring complex data recorded from the training patients including eye tracking, task progress, and success rates. It is open to anyone interested in 3D User Interfaces (3DUIs) and Virtual Reality, from researchers to students, enthusiasts, and professionals. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate innovative and creative solutions to challenging 3DUI problems. The topic of this year is “United for Planet Earth: Promoting Environmental Sustainability in Collaborative Virtual Environments”. Given the increasing importance of an ecologically friendly lifestyle, collaborative virtual environments provide a promising meeting platform to simulate real-world encounters without the need for physical travel. What’s more, meeting in an immersive 3D space offers a large variety of novel opportunities to educate oneself, teach each other, and explore the complex relationships that altogether affect today’s and tomorrow’s climate. This year’s 3DUI contest asks participants to suggest novel forms of teaching, understanding, and/or promoting environmental sustainability collaboratively as a team in Extended Reality (VR/AR/MR/XR). Participants are asked to propose a 3DUI project in which at least two collaborators can work on an environmental issue together. Submissions will be evaluated through the following criteria: 1. 1. Efficiency and convenience of user operations 2. Complexity of collaborative interaction 3. Novelty of the 3DUI design 4. Enjoyment and engagement (fun) Selected contestants will be required to provide a software demonstration of their solutions using the OpenXR standard, ensuring compatibility with consumer mixed-reality hardware. Eligibility The 3DUI Contest is open to anyone interested in 3DUIs — researchers, students, hobbyists, professionals, or anyone else. Requirements for the selection and presentation are specified below. Teams Teams of up to ten people may submit solutions. Paper Teams must submit a short paper of two pages, including a description of the solution, details about the software developed, a brief description of the closest related work and how the system is novel, and a description of how they iterated upon the design. If the submission is accepted, this paper will be included in the IEEE VR Conference proceedings as a two-page extended abstract describing the contest solution. Therefore, it must be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format as specified for VR conference papers. Video Teams will also submit a video that presents the solution to the public, including an explanation of the equipment, software, and interaction techniques used to solve the problem. If the submission is accepted, the video will be made publicly available. Videos should have a length of between 3 and 5 minutes and should include the title along with the names and affiliations of the contestants. The submitted file should be a high-quality compressed video with a size of no more than 300 MB and submitted directly via the submission system or via a link to an unlisted video on an online platform like YouTube. On-Site Demonstration If the submission is accepted, authors will participate in a demo session at the conference, where they will showcase their work to the IEEE VR community. The winner of the contest will be determined at IEEE VR, for which various judges from the community will try out and rate the presented 3DUIs. The judging criteria are novelty, usability, fun, and the relevance of the topic. Furthermore, we will offer an on-site voting platform for all conference attendees. Review Cycle I (Submission to Initial notification) Submissions will be assigned to two members of the VR 2025 International Program Committee (IPC): a coordinator (primary) and a secondary reviewer. Submissions that violate the submission guidelines or that receive low review scores from the coordinator and the secondary reviewer will be early rejected. This stage of the review process will be double blind. We will strive to have all other submissions receive a total of at least three reviews. Based on the reviews and in consultation with a subset of the IPC, the Program Chairs will make one of the following initial recommendations for each submission: - Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper. Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), these submissions with substantial contribution will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. - Conditionally accept as conference paper. These submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings of IEEE VR, archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. - Recommend as a two-page poster. Authors of a submission receiving this recommendation have the option of condensing their submission into a two-page poster, including references. Subject to a final approval by the Posters chairs, accepted posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. Note that IEEE VR does not consider posters as a final disclosure of research results. Thus, work accepted as an IEEE VR poster might be eligible for inclusion in future publications. - Reject. Review Cycle II (Initial notification to Final decision) The revision of each conditionally accepted paper will be reviewed by its coordinator, who will make a final recommendation regarding acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. Additional Guidelines Abstract Submission. Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. Ethics and Responsibility. All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution(s), and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee prior to collecting data. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your institution, needs to be indicated via the submission system. Authors will be required to submit the name of the ethical review board, approved protocol title and number, and date that ethical approval was obtained prior to running human participants. Authors must be able to provide proof of ethical approval upon request. Incorrect reporting of ethical approval will result in desk rejection. Participant Diversity. To support high-quality research, all submissions describing research with human participants should strive for participant diversity. As first steps toward this goal, VR 2025 is encouraging the following: - Research that aims to benefit a general population should be representative of that population. (e.g. balanced across gender or age). Research that claims to benefit a specific population should clearly state and justify its focus on that population (e.g. pilots, surgeons). - All submissions must report participant demographics (gender, age, etc.). Notes about recruiting representative populations: - Recruiting more diverse samples does not imply that the research must treat these data as independent variables and analyze differences in independent variables between demographic groups. - Recruiting more diverse samples does not increase the number of participants required for adequate statistical power given an effect size. - Many ethics review boards and funding sources already require participant diversity for inclusive and unbiased research. The VR 2025 program committee and external reviewers will be strongly encouraged to consider participant diversity in relation to the generality of the claims made by a submission as a first-order reviewing concern. Submissions that make general claims yet rely on a severely imbalanced participant groups may be negatively impacted by the reviewing process. Review Duties for Authors. The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide constructive feedback and engage with authors on their work. Every paper needs three quality reviews. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, for each submitted paper, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. For example, if the same author group submits two papers, they need to commit to reviewing six papers. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. Presentation at the Conference. All accepted submissions must be presented orally at the conference. An in-person presentation is expected, and online presentations will be accommodated only in exceptional cases. Requests for online presentations due to exceptional cases must be made at least one month before the conference. Submission Language. All paper submissions must be in English. Previous Publication and Plagiarism. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication.
