Call for Posters of IEEE LDAV with extended deadlines The 5th IEEE Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization will be held in conjunction with IEEE Vis 2015 in Chicago, Illinois on October 25-26, 2015. Abstract submission deadline: August 24th, 2015 Call for Posters: We invite you to submit unpublished work to the IEEE LDAV 2015 Poster Program. The poster program is a venue designed to highlight ongoing research and late breaking topics that have produced promising preliminary results. In addition to the topics listed under Call for Papers, we also welcome submissions that showcase successful stories of applying visualization to large-scale data intensive applications. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the symposium attendees and solicit feedback. Interested authors should submit a two-page abstract that describes the underlying problem, the proposed method, and preliminary results. Accepted poster abstracts will be included in the symposium proceedings. The format of the abstract will be the same as the format used for the regular paper submission. Poster authors are encouraged, but not required, to include a draft or sketch of the poster layout and content in their submission. This would help reviewers and show that the poster format is used effectively. The draft poster should be in PDF format. The authors should indicate if the poster would be accompanied by an on-site demonstration and/or videos. The second annual workshop on Human-Centered Big Data Research will be held in conjunction with IEEE BigData 2015 in Santa Clara, CA, USA on Thursday October 29 2015. Call for Papers Rapid growth in data volume and velocity has driven a revolution in computational infrastructure and processing capabilities, but how does this change the way humans work in this new Big Data environment? Human-centered computing focuses on technologies that enhance the human's abilities to perceive, understand, and collaborate. There are many significant challenges for combined human/technology systems that emerge from the dramatic changes in the nature of the technology that humans use to harness Big Data. The purpose of this workshop is to gather experts in multi-disciplinary fields and discuss research at the intersection of humans and Big Data. This second workshop on Human-Centered Big Data Research (HCBDR) marks a continuing interest for research that aims to understand how people solve problems and make decisions in the face of magnitudes more information, analyze how tools can help us bridge the gap between Big Data and knowledge acquisition, and evaluate how different aspects of Big Data (e.g., volume, velocity, veracity, and variety) impact a user's sensemaking strategies and performance. As our sensors become more sophisticated and our world becomes more online, it is important to understand how humans can interact with stream data processing systems to make sense of dynamic phenomena in near-real-time. In this talk, Dr. Greaves will discuss some ongoing research in the interaction between humans and streams of data, parallels with exploratory data analysis, useful formalisms, and the relation to work on social machines. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We have a new deadline of August 14, but will give priority and early decisions to papers submitted by the original deadline of August 3. EGAS 2015 will explore the technical challenges and technology development opportunities of graph visual analytics found in the big data era with the goal of solving big problems with big graph data. These tools have typically been designed for experts, including scientists, financiers, and other professionals. However, individuals are now increasingly able to collect and manipulate large volumes of data about themselves (e.g. biometric data, exercise, sleep, and nutrition data) as well as data about topics that interest them (neighborhood statistics, sports metrics, environmental data, etc.). This "personal data" is creating new opportunities for both visualization and visual analytics, and presents a variety of new research and design challenges. Recently, the visualization community has started to consider the emerging and important case of "personal visualization" and examine the challenges and potential associated with collecting, visualizing, and making sense of personal data. This workshop, held in conjunction with the <http://ieeevis.org/> 2015 IEEE VIS conference in Chicago, will examine the opportunities and challenges for personal visualization and personal visual analytics. The venue will provide an opportunity to discuss the current landscape of personal visualization tools and approaches as well as highlight ongoing work in this new area. DSIA Workshop Submission Deadline Extended (and Keynote Speaker announcement)

Due to a conflict with the VLDB deadline, we are extending the submission deadline for the Workshop on Data Systems for Interactive Analysis (DSIA) by 2 weeks. The new deadline is Monday, August 17, 2015. In addition, we are pleased to announce that Joe Hellerstein from UC Berkeley will be the keynote speaker for the workshop. Joseph M. Hellerstein is a Chancellor's Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, whose work focuses on data-centric systems and the way they drive computing. He is an ACM Fellow, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow and the recipient of three ACM-SIGMOD "Test of Time" awards for his research. In 2010, Fortune Magazine included him in their list of 50 smartest people in technology, and MIT's Technology Review magazine included his work on their TR10 list of the 10 technologies "most likely to change our world". Hellerstein is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Trifacta, a software vendor providing intelligent interactive solutions to the messy problem of wrangling data. He serves on the technical advisory boards of a number of computing and Internet companies including EMC, SurveyMonkey, Captricity, and Dato, and previously served as the Director of Intel Research, Berkeley. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2015. *** New Submission Deadline: August 17 (Monday), 2015 *** MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND OF THE WORKSHOP The goal of this workshop is to foster innovative research at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. Database researchers have developed techniques for storing and querying massive amounts of data, including methods for distributed, streaming and approximate computation. Machine learning techniques provide ways to discover unexpected patterns and to automate and scale well-defined analysis procedures. Recent systems research has looked at how to develop novel database systems architectures to support the iterative, optimization-oriented workloads of machine learning algorithms. Of course, both the inputs and outputs of these systems are ultimately driven by people, in support of analysis tasks. The life-cycle of data involves an iterative, interactive process of determining which questions to ask, the data to analyze, appropriate features and models, and interpreting results. In order to achieve better analysis outcomes, data processing systems require improved interfaces that account for the strengths and limitations of human perception and cognition. Meanwhile, to keep up with the rising tide of data, interactive visualization tools need to integrate more techniques from databases and machine learning. In this workshop, we will explore the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to jump start cross-pollination between these fields. The program will be split between invited talks from researchers in these communities, and speculative, ongoing work that straddles the areas. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. We encourage late-breaking work, research in progress, and position papers in interactive analysis, broadly construed. The bottleneck to discovery is now our ability to analyze and make sense of heterogeneous, noisy, and often massive datasets. Extracting knowledge from this abundance of data lies at the heart of 21st century discovery. We truly are at the dawn of a revolutionary new era. Data science is the practice of deriving insight from data, at the intersection of the disciplines of statistical methodology, computer science, and one or more traditional scholarly fields. Visualization is an integral part of data science, and essential to enable sophisticated analysis of data. The first Symposium on Visualization in Data Science (VDS) at IEEE VIS 2015 will bring together domain scientists and methods researchers. POSTERS We solicit posters to engage the community in discussion on topics related to visualization in data science. You must present a corresponding poster during the designated poster session, and are encouraged to incorporate a demo or video into your presentation. You also have the opportunity to give a brief oral preview during a plenary ‘fast forward’ session. *Job posting - PhD scholarship on Visual Modelling of Complex Engineering Systems - Technical University of Denmark* DTU Management Engineering offers one 3-year PhD fellowship to conduct research into Visual Modelling of Complex Engineering Systems Design. The position will be based in the Engineering Systems Group. The research project, part of the EuroTech Universities Alliance Partnership, will be carried out in association with the Institute of Product Development at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and other industry partners and public organisations. *Responsibilities and tasks * Engineering design deals with complex subject matters. Visualisations are fundamental to studying and communicating complex subject matters. However, beyond acknowledging this value, hardly any emphasis has been paid to the role of visual modelling in engineering systems design. Visualisations stimulate thought, enable collaboration across technical disciplines, inform technical as well as business decision making processes, and increase our ability to spot and avoid mistakes. Awareness and integration of different views is particularly important against the background of large-scale engineering projects, with the involvement of a myriad of technical and non-technical audiences. Moreover, we can observe a trend towards model-based engineering, enabling significant productivity improvements in the design process. However, operationalising the opportunities of model-based engineering is currently limited due to a lack of intuitive visual notations. Therefore, the project’s overall objective is to generate and enable the conscious use of integrated and interactive visualisations in engineering systems design that support integration of multiple views, uncover trends in data, and provide engineering intelligence for robust decision-making. In other words, the successful candidate will be able to model and communicate complex subject matters in ways that are understandable and actionable by decision-makers (e.g. in the form of visual representations, including network graphs, infographics, and dashboards). Core questions include: •How best to model and visualise complex systems? •How to use visual design of information to unearth trends in data, enable insights and foster robust decision-making? •What visualisations work best for communication among a variety of audiences? •How to balance information content and interaction qualities of visualisations?This project cherises the fruitful intersection between network science and design. Depending on the disciplinary background and expertise of the candidate, there are opportunities to tailor the project and push the research frontiers accordingly. We invite talented candidates who are passionate about conducting key research activities such as a) identifying critical transdisciplinary communication situations in the development cycle of engineering systems through literature reviews, field studies, and data-mining, b) analysing and categorising existing visualisations with respect to their particular properties, e.g. for supporting transdisciplinary communication situations, c) developing appropriate information visualisations and visual languages, d) testing for improved model comprehension by conducting experiments, and e) guiding visual modelling practices for improved complex engineering system design research and industry practice. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that applicants from a broad range of technical backgrounds will be considered. Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) a first class degree or equivalent, preferably in engineering, computer science, information design, graphic design, psychology, or behavioural economics. Preference will be given to those candidates with a high level of English who can demonstrate an aptitude for programming, conceptual and empirical work and the confidence to network within academic, public, and commercial organisations. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
