The workshop aims at bringing together experts in IR and knowledge mapping in order to discuss the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes. Motivation, Goals, Objectives, Outcome The success of an information system depends mainly on its ability to properly support interaction between users and information. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question (Mayr et al. 2008, Mutschke et al. 2011). Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information (Nicholas et al. 2004, Westerman et al. 2005). This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Yet, this seems to remain the weakest point of interactive information systems (Ford 2000, Foster 2004, Tang 2007). Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, treemaps or specific, map like arrangements of search results (cf. Börner et al. 2003, Shiffrin/Börner 2004, Börner 2010, Klavans/Boyack 2010, Skupin et al. 2013, Sahal et al. 2013, Boyack/Klavans 2013). As an activity performed in very different disciplines - and often independent from each other - it stands in line with the dominance of the visual in our culture (Manovich 2009). Knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but - to the best of our knowledge - still far away from being applicable for searching digital libraries. Most maps are made for special purposes, are static, and usually not interactive (Akdag Salah et al. 2012). In interactive information systems the use of visual elements to enhance information seeking and discovery is a recurring research issue. However, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections (Börner/Chen 2001), nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the "map makers" on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, there is also a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands, which are driven by quite different epistemic perspectives. Our workshop aims at bringing together these two communities: experts in IR reflecting on visual enhanced search interfaces and experts in knowledge mapping reflecting on visualizations of the content of a collection that might also present - visually - a context for a search term. The intention of the workshop is to raise awareness of the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. The major focus of the workshop is on the question of how knowledge maps can be utilized for scholarly information seeking in large information spaces. Our interests include interactive IR, information seeking behavior, knowledge mapping, science modelling, information visualization, and digital libraries. The workshop is closely related to the COST action KNOWeSCAPE (Analyzing the dynamics of information and knowledge landscapes: http://knowescape.org/<http://www.gesis.org/http:/>) which aims at implementing new navigation and search strategies based on insights of the complex nature of knowledge spaces as well as visualization principles for knowledge maps. The proposed workshop can tie up to the success of the first international workshop on "Knowledge Maps and Information Retrieval (KMIR)", held as part of the DL 2014 in London (see http://www.gesis.org/en/events/events-archive/conferences/kmir2014/ or workshop proceedings: http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-1311) The long-term research goal is to develop and evaluate new approaches for combining knowledge mapping and IR. More specifically, we address questions such as: * What are appropriate interactive knowledge maps for IR systems * How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking purposes? * How to locate an information need on a knowledge map? * How can (visually enhanced) search interfaces to knowledge maps look like? * How can interaction with knowledge maps be transformed into IR tasks? * Can knowledge maps improve searching in large, in particular heterogeneous, cross-language, cross-domain information spaces? * And the other way around: Can insights from IR also improve knowledge mapping itself? The availability of new IR test collections that contain citation and bibliographic information like the iSearch collection (see Lykke et al. 2010) or the ACL collection (Ritchie et al. 2006) could deliver an interesting playground for developing or evaluating combined models of IR and knowledge mapping for scholarly searching. Topical Outline To support the previously described goals the workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: * Knowledge maps for digital libraries * Knowledge orders of information spaces * Information seeking behaviour * Information discovery * Interactive IR systems * Human-computer IR * Knowledge Visualization in IR * Visual interfaces to information systems * Browsing and navigating information spaces * Task based user modelling, interaction and personalization * Evaluation of interactive IR systems. Types of Submissions * Full Papers (6 to 8 pages): Full papers, describing advanced or completed work * Short Papers (4 pages): Position papers or work in progress * Poster and Demonstrations (2 pages): Poster and Presentation of systems or prototypes All submissions must be written in English following the Springer LNCS Author Guidelines (http://www.springer.com/lncs) and should be submitted as PDF files to EasyChair: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=kmir2015. The conference organizers seek contributions of high quality papers, panels or tutorials, addressing any novel aspect of sentient multimedia systems that significantly benefits from the incorporation/integration of multimedia data (e.g., visual, audio, pen, voice, image, etc.), for presentation at the conference and publication in the proceedings and JVLC journal. Both research and case study papers or demonstrations describing results in research area as well as industrial development cases and experiences are solicited. The use of prototypes and demonstration video for presentations is encouraged. An extra large special issue of JVLC The Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (JVLC), which is indexed by SCI, EI, DBLP, Scopus and other indexers, will publish around forty selected papers of DMS/VLC/DET2015 in the December 2015 extra large special issue of JVLC. The conference will publish the proceedings available to authors and conference attendees. Selected papers will go through three rounds of reviews so that they can be further improved to meet the standard of JVLC. Workshops and Special Sessions This year, DMS2015 will be held in conjunction with workshops and special sections. Papers submitted to workshops or special sessions are invited by the program committee chairs of the workshops/special sessions. This joint organization aims to collect research results from different perspectives. The following workshops are being planned: . International Workshop on Visual Languages and Computing (VLC15) . International Workshop on Distance Education Technology (DET15) Hotel Information The DMS2015 Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Vancouver, Canada. A special daily rate of $159 US dollars will be available during the conference period. Information for authors Papers must be written in English. The DC is a single-day invitation-only event taking place the day before IEEE VIS where Ph.D. students in any visualization field---preferably those at the proposal defense stage or equivalent---present their proposed dissertation work and receive feedback from leading senior visualization researchers. We invite contributions from the scientific visualization, information visualization, and visual analytics student communities. The colloquium will allow students to discuss their research directions in a supportive atmosphere with a panel of distinguished leaders and with their peers. Students can expect helpful feedback and fresh perspectives on their research topics and possible career paths, and will have the opportunity to interact closely with expert researchers in their field. The colloquium will support community-building by connecting beginning and advanced researchers. The DC is open to Ph.D. students in all stages of their studies, regardless of whether they are presenting research work at the main conference or not. Only selected applicants will be allowed to participate in the colloquium, and will be expected to attend the full day of events. Preference will be given to students who have formulated a dissertation topic but are still a year or more away from graduating. In North American terms, this corresponds to students that will or have recently defended their thesis proposal. Students who are in the process of formulating their research topic are particularly encouraged to apply, as this is the time where external feedback can have most impact. It is our experience that students who participate in the DC too early in their studies will not be able to get focused and useful feedback, whereas participating too late means that any significant feedback received will not be possible to incorporate in the student's dissertation due to time constraints. All research topics suitable for the IEEE SciVis, IEEE InfoVis, and IEEE VAST main programs as well as associated workshops and symposia are appropriate for the Doctoral Colloquium. *FORMAT* The colloquium will likely consist of both parallel sessions of student presentations as well as common discussions with the expert panelists. A lunch is also planned that will give student participants the opportunity to interact more informally with panelists. *FUNDING* Contingent upon pending requests for external sponsorship of the VIS DC, we might be able to partially fund the travel, conference registration, and lodging for some accepted DC student participants. *DEADLINE* The deadline for DC submissions is *May 10, 2015 (5PM PST)*. ==== Call for Papers ==== VISSOFT 2015: 3rd IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization September 27 - September 28, 2015, Bremen, Germany http://vissoft.info Software visualization is a broad research area encompassing concepts, methods, tools, and techniques that assist in a range of software engineering and software development activities. Covered aspects include the development and evaluation of approaches for visually analyzing software and software systems, including their structure, execution behavior, and evolution. The VISSOFT IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization continues the history of the ACM SOFTVIS Symposium on Software Visualization and the IEEE VISSOFT International Workshop on Visualizing Software for Understanding and Analysis. The conference focuses on visualization techniques that target aspects of software maintenance and evolution, program comprehension, reverse engineering, and reengineering, i.e., how visualization helps professionals to understand, analyze, test and evolve software. We aim to gather tool developers, experts, users, and researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. We seek technical papers, empirical studies, applications, or case studies and provide a platform for presenting novel research ideas and tools. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for software engineering data, such as, - source code - static and dynamic dependencies - software evolution and repositories - software documentation - web services - protocol, log, and performance data - parallel techniques - database schemes - software security and privacy issues - workflow and business processes * Visualization to support program comprehension, software testing, and debugging * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in computer science and software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools and development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualization * Industrial experience on using software visualization Papers are solicited that present original, unpublished research results and will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tool track related to the same list of topics suggested above. All accepted submissions will appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library. -== Technical papers ==- These contributions describe in-depth mature research results in the above-mentioned areas of interest. The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. This EPSRC-funded project, titled "Visual Justifications for Ontologies" (EP/M016323/1), will also involve collaboration with Nokia Networks in Finland. The successful applicant will have (or be close to attaining) a PhD or equivalent level of professional research experience in computer science (or a related discipline), a record of quality research publications, skills applicable to at least one of diagrammatic logic, visualisation or empirical computer science. Experience with description logics and ontologies is also desirable. The election period will begin on April 15, 2015 and will remain open for 15 days until April 30. The new Chair's term will run from May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2017.
