****************************************************************************** 11th Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) Call for Papers ### UPDATE : VizSec Deadline EXTENDED by 1 week! ### http://www.vizsec.org/ ****************************************************************************** The 11th Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Paris, France on November 10, 2014 in conjunction with IEEE VIS. Important research problems often lie at the intersection of disparate domains. Our focus is to explore effective, scalable visual interfaces for security domains, where visualization may provide a distinct benefit, including computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, preventing user assisted attacks, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing in addition to traditional network security. Human time and attention are precious resources. We are particularly interested in visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts so that further processing may be handled by machines, freeing analysts for other tasks. For example, a malware analyst might use a visualization system to analyze a new piece of malicious software that facilitates generating a signature for future machine processing. When appropriate, research that incorporates multiple data sources, such as network packet captures, firewall rule sets and logs, DNS logs, web server logs, and/or intrusion detection system logs, is particularly desirable. Technical Papers ================ Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, or experiments and evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library as part of the ACM International Conference Proceedings Series. Posters ======= Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees and solicit feedback. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. Data ==== If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST 2012 Challenge data. VAST 2013 and VAST 2011 also had cyber security data if you are looking for additional data. Submissions =========== Papers ------ Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. The VizSec proceedings will be published by ACM. The ACM SIG Proceedings Templates provides Word and LaTeX templates. (If you are using LaTeX, please use Option 2: LaTeX2e - Tighter Alternate style.) Authors should apply ACM Computing Classification categories and terms. ACM invites authors to submit an image representation of their article. The image must be selected from the article body and can be any of the following: art, graphic, table, figures, etc. (Image files are to be as square as possible, 100x100 ppi and in jpg format.) Authors must supply a caption with the image. The caption length should be no more than 512 characters. Posters ------- Interested authors should submit an extended abstract as PDF of at most 2 pages including figures and references. Accepted abstracts will be made available on this website. Authors must present a corresponding poster during the workshop. Call for Participation The IEEE VGTC International Data-Visualization Contest Contest Theme: Visualization-Now I See It! http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-international-data-visualization-contest DEADLINE: Monday, Sept 1, 2014 The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC)<http://vgtc.org/> is sponsoring its first International Data-Visualization Contest to recognize outstanding design in visualization and visual analytics from around the world. The 2014 contest theme is "Visualization-Now I See It!" The contest will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The award will be announced at the IEEE VPG Reception to be held at the IEEE VIS 2014<http://ieeevis.org/> conference. You are not required to attend either the VIS 2014 conference or the VPG reception to participate in the contest. Eligibility All visualization and visual analytics designers, developers, researchers, and practitioners from business, academia, and government sectors around the world are eligible to participate. Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than 3 submissions to the 2014 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on Monday, September 1, 2014 to qualify for the 2014 contest. Selection Procedure All active IEEE VPG members<http://vgtc.org/content/vis-pioneers-group-vpg-members> who do not make a submission to the contest will be invited to participate in the first-round review. The top contest submissions from this first-round review will undergo a second round of reviews conducted by five distinguished IEEE VPG members representing different backgrounds, who will be chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPG chairs. The 5-member selection committee will thoroughly review and assess the top contest submissions based on communication effectiveness and design originality. The selection committee will submit their recommendation for best visualization to the IEEE VGTC chair by Monday, Oct 27, 2014. Monetary Award Along with a certificate, the winner of the IEEE/VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Best Data-Visualization Award will receive a check for $500 USD. Only one monetary award will be given in 2014. Submission Details The 2014 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Provenance information can be a resource for "reflection-in-action" during analysis, supporting collaboration between analysts, and reporting to decision makers. It can also act as a resource after the event, supporting the interpretation of claims, audit, accountability and training. There has been considerable work on capturing and visualizing of "data provenance", which focuses on data collection and computation, and "analytic provenance", which captures the interactive data exploration and reasoning process. However, there is limited work of utilizing such provenance information to support sensemaking, in terms of improving efficacy and avoiding pitfalls such as issues of data quality and human bias. This workshop aims to bring together researchers involved in visual analytics and various aspects of sensemaking to consider emerging positions, questions, and findings related to the capture, processing, representation and use of provenance information to support complex sensemaking tasks. The emphasis is on discussion and collaboration, with a goal of collaboratively producing a paper describing the state-of-the-art of provenance for sensemaking following the workshop. These deviations are known as cognitive biases. Heuristics allow us to make “good enough” decisions without expending all of our cognitive effort on the task, however, in critical decision environments, “good enough” is often NOT good enough. Visualization tools are increasingly adept at making sense of complex data, but researchers who study cognitive biases have come to realize that the quality of decisions made with these tools are often impaired because tool designers fail to address how heuristics and biases operate in a human-computer interactive setting. Despite decades of research on cognitive biases in controlled settings, there is yet no “recipe book” for experimentally-validated tools and techniques to avoid judgment biases when building tools for solving complex problems in the real world. As well as considering software mitigation solutions, we would also like to explore whether the way we visualize data is subject to cognitive biases. We invite participants from a wide range of disciplines such as information visualization, visual analytics, software engineering, cognitive psychology and decision science, as well as those close to end-user groups like intelligence analysts, to explore some of the ways in which biases impact user performance and share ideas and experiences about practical ways to reduce or overcome these potentially harmful effects. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - analytic techniques to mitigate cognitive biases - cognitive biases and information visualization - integrating cognitive bias mitigation into existing software - measuring susceptibility to cognitive bias - empirical methods for investigating cognitive biases - cognitive biases in collaborative systems - new classification schemes for cognitive biases - persuasive technology - evaluation techniques/methodologies - survey/SOTA The workshop will include invited talks, short individual presentations, panel sessions and group activities and will provide a forum for participants to exchange ideas and establish a roadmap of the state of the art and identify future research potential. We hope to grow this interdisciplinary community to promote future collaboration. SUBMISSIONS We invite authors to submit an extended abstract (about 2 pages) of either a position or technical paper. These records are an invaluable data source for clinical research and improvement of clinical quality, as they provide longitudinal health information about patient populations. The use of EHR databases could be dramatically improved if easy-to-use interfaces allowed clinical researchers and quality improvement analysts to explore complex patterns in order to build and test hypotheses regarding the benefits, risks, and appropriateness of treatments or medication regimens. Novel strategies in information visualization and visual analytics are needed. The interest in this topic is growing at a very rapid pace and is interdisciplinary by nature, both in term of field (medicine and computer science) but also research environment (academic research as well as industry and government agencies). Because of the European location of the conference, we have a unique opportunity to create bridges and explore new collaborations between groups that would not meet otherwise. In spite of substantial advance in various visualization techniques, our understanding on how well these advanced visualizations are comprehended by users, or what we call “visualization literacy,” is quite limited. As a sequel to the visualization literacy workshop in EuroVis (https://www.kth.se/profile/178785/page/eurovis-2014-workshop-towards-visual…) this workshop will investigate the visualization literacy problem. Unlike other workshops that promote discussion around position papers, this workshop will be based on actual participation of creating visualization literacy measures.
