Tutorials offer the community an opportunity to learn about the state-of-the-art concepts and techniques and allow the presenters to share their expertise. We invite proposals from active researchers and experienced presenters. Ideally, a tutorial will cover the state-of-the-art research and development in a specific area strongly related to IUI. Tutorials on interdisciplinary areas, novel or fast growing directions, and significant practical applications are also encouraged. Each accepted tutorial will receive one free IUI’15 registration. =========================== Submission Guidelines and Notes =========================== The proposals should be PDF documents not exceeding 3 pages, submitted by e-mail to the tutorial chairs at: workshop-tutorial2015(a)iui.acm.org We encourage prospective presenters to contact the tutorial chairs in advance and discuss their tutorial ideas. Each tutorial proposal should provide the following information: - Name and title: Your name, the tutorial title and the expected length of your tutorial (up to half a day) - Description of tutorial topic and goal: Detailed outline of the tutorial, along with descriptions of the objectives, its relevance to IUI, benefits to the attendees, and course materials/handouts (links to online materials encouraged). - Organizers: Name, email address, and affiliation of each presenter. Meetups: Meetups (previously known as BOFs or Birds of a Feather) are an excellent forum to discuss a wide range of topics related to visualization. For example, if you are an experienced researcher, consider submitting a proposal to share your knowledge in an informal setting with conference participants. Proposals devoted to a particular discipline's methods and cross disciplinary proposals are both welcome. For example, some recent meetup meetings included opportunities to meet and discuss topics related to blogging about visualization, the BioVis contest, and the connection between art and science. VIS 2014 is eager to expand its meetup sessions and will consider proposals for each day and evening of the conference, given room availability. VIS2014 meetups are public and open to all attendees. Meetup organizers need to be registered at the conference for at least the day of the meetup. Proposal format: A meetup proposal should include a title, a brief description of the topic to be addressed, and a list of prospective attendees. The proposal should be no longer than two pages in length. Meetup proposals should be sent to the Meetup Chairs at meetups(a)ieeevis.org. The ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART 2.0 is online! Since its foundation in 1999, the Archive of Digital Art (former Database of Virtual Art) has become the most important scholarly online archive for media art. In cooperation with established media artists, researchers, and institutions, it has been documenting the rapidly evolving world of digital art and its related fields for more than a decade and today contains a selection of thousands of artwork at the intersection of art, science, and technology. A New Tool Enables Collaborative Archiving With two large international grants, the archive is evolving into a web 2.0 environment. The idea is to provide community features and user-oriented applications to enable a collective scientific exchange between artists, researchers and the public to foster interdisciplinary and global collaborative analysis and a proactive process of knowledge transfer. Meta-Thesaurus Cross-links Media Art with Art History Furthermore the archive’s rich data collection - based on a ‘concept of expanded documentation’ for media art - will be semantically cross-linked with classical art from the Renaissance to the present by a newly developed meta-thesaurus. This innovative tool will expedite the contextualisation of media art in art history and enable large-scale comparative image studies. The aim is to foster a better understanding and systematic integration of media art in scientific studies and cultural institutions. Content Meets High Academic Standards The collaboratively-compiled data gives a broad and vivid picture of the multifarious developments in digital art. ADA allows the upload of high resolution images, videos, academic texts, literature, and information on exhibition, technology etc. More than 500 artists selected from 5000 applicants offer the best selection of high quality work. To ensure the high academic and artistic level of the contributions, the prerequisite for becoming become a member is a minimum of five exhibitions and/or publications. This years theme of the workshop highlights the intersections between the perspectives of computer science and the social sciences, such as: How can the experience gained from the design of crowdsourcing applications inform the development of new approaches to collective intelligence and social computing on the web? Can we conceptualise specific classes of human computation as instances of different forms of social collaboration? And vice versa: what lessons from the broader domain of the study of large-scale social systems can inform the design of new kinds of systems for crowdsourcing and human computation? Both crowdsourcing and human computation consider humans as distributed task-solvers, with the latter embedding human users as a part of intelligent computational systems. They both leverage human reasoning to solve complex tasks that are easy for individuals but difficult for purely computational approaches (human computation) or for traditional organisational work arrangements (crowdsourcing). Effective realisations of these paradigms typically require participation of a large number of distributed users over the Internet, a careful design of task structures, participation incentives and mechanisms for coordinating and aggregating results of individual participants into collective solutions. Though rarely explicitly addressed as such, social media and related technologies often provide the enabling methods and technologies for the realisation of such models. Examples include crowdsourcing marketplaces (e.g. Amazon mTurk), crowdsourcing service providers (e.g. Microtask, CrowdFlower) or games with a purpose. While centralised platforms are also at the core of "traditional" approaches to collective intelligence (e.g. Wikipedia), attention is increasingly turning to the possibilities of harnessing existing social platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) that already gather huge numbers of users into webs of social relationships. For instance, such relationships allow the development of new kinds of task routing mechanisms (e.g. identifying the best or most trusted participants for a specific task), while social incentives can reflect community-like phenomena (e.g. the reputation economy). This is already leading to experiments such as expert-based crowdsourcing or solutions for task-injection across distributed social platforms. It is also partially reflected in growing research on inferring social influence, attention or trust from online social exchanges with the aim of providing mechanisms for more effective information exchanges or collective problem solving. Socially-aware human computation and crowdsourcing systems call for new work division and execution mechanisms, where the traditional individual "tayloristic" model evolves into a collaborativ labour environment featuring different kinds of communication and collaboration between the users going beyond private exchanges between the task-owner and the task-solver. This begs the question of how such more open, participatory models of collective action can inform the development of new kinds of crowdsourcing and human computation systems and approaches: * Can we conceptualise specific classes of human computation as instances of different forms of social collaboration? * How can we design crowdsourcing and human computation systems where the involvement of a large number of diverse human users as providers, aggregators or "processors" of information leads to outcomes that benefit the entire collective rather than only individual contributors or commissioners of task assignments? * How can the theory of collective action inform the design of such collaborative approaches to socially-aware crowdsourcing and human computation? * What are the different sources of value of the "human touch" that can be brought to bear through such new approaches? We explicitly encourage contributions that address the importance of domain-specific challenges or use cases as well as contributions that enrich a computer science perspective with a user-centered view and system-level social dynamics. Submission Procedure -------------------- The workshop will accept: * Regular research papers (6-8 pages) * Applications / Demonstrators (4 pages) * Position papers (2-4 pages) Submissions should describe the innovative aspects of the work they present, highlighting pros and cons with respect to related work. Demo proposals should describe clearly what will be demonstrated and how the contributions will be illustrated interactively. Optionally, proposals can include a URL that shows a preliminary version of the demo (e.g., screenshots, videos, or a running system). All submissions will be reviewed in a peer-review process by at least two members of the program committee. Each paper should be classifiable as mainly covering research, applications, or systems, using the following guidelines for each: * Research papers should describe results that contribute to advances in state-of-the-art software, hardware, algorithms, interaction, or human factors. * Application papers should explain how the authors built upon existing ideas and applied them to solve an interesting problem in a novel way. Each paper should include an evaluation of the success of the use of VR/AR/MR in the given application domain. * System papers should indicate how the implementers integrated known techniques and technologies to produce an effective system, along with any lessons learned in the process. To meet TVCG standards, long papers will undergo a two-stage review process (see SUBMISSION DEADLINES below). Authors of long papers that are determined to be acceptable with minor revisions during a first review cycle will be invited to submit a revised version for a second review cycle. Only long papers that are accepted in this second review cycle will appear in the journal issue and be presented at the conference. Short papers can cover preliminary studies, prototype applications, or initial implementations. Short papers will be published separately in the standard conference proceedings. The primary difference between short and long papers is in the size of their contributions and NOT in the importance/impact of their contributions. To assure this, short and long papers will be treated as separate tracks and will be accepted or rejected according to the merit of their contributions. In general, rejected long papers will NOT be considered for acceptance as short papers, unless the reviewers unanimously feel this is the right decision, and rewriting is determined to be doable in the time available. Consequently, authors should carefully consider the category for each submitted paper. Note that an abstract must be uploaded prior to the paper. This facilitates assigning reviewers, as the review process is on a tight schedule. All paper submissions must be in English. Long papers must not exceed ten (10) pages in length, with the caveat that the standard is eight (8) pages. Short papers must not exceed six (6) pages in length. If the reviewers find a paper overly long for the size of its contribution, they may ask for it to be shortened it if it is accepted. Both long and short papers should be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format described at http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Track/vr-menu.html . IEEE VR uses a double-blind review process, meaning both the authors and the reviewers remain anonymous to each other. Submissions (including citations and optional videos) should not contain information that unnecessarily identifies the authors, their institutions, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors should be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and relevant previous work by the authors, authors may additionally upload previous papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation; these materials will only been seen by the primary reviewer. All papers must be submitted electronically. Authors may also submit videos to aid the program committee in reviewing their submissions. Videos must be submitted according to the instructions at the conference website. Videos submitted with papers will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the « Call for Videos »). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of identifying information. If accepted for the video proceedings, a revised version will be requested. Paper submissions must not have been previously published. A paper is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A paper identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during the entire VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG) Reception at IEEE VIS 2014 http://ieeevis.org/year/2014/info/overview-amp-topics/visualization-pioneer… IEEE Computer Society Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) established the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG, http://www.vgtc.org/vpg.html) in 2013. VPG will host its second member exclusive reception on Monday, Nov 10, co-located with IEEE VIS 2014 conference in Paris. (The reception location will be announced later.) To become a member of the VPG, one simply needs to have at least 20 years of contributions to some aspect of visualization and visual analytics. The membership fee is $US 50.00 (40 EURO) per year. In order to simplify and expedite the membership payment process, VPG highly encourages its members to pay the membership fee when they register for the VIS conference online. Additionally, there will be a VPG promotional table set up at the IEEE VIS conference lobby on Monday to accept membership applications. This years theme of the workshop highlights the intersections between the perspectives of computer science and the social sciences, such as: How can the experience gained from the design of crowdsourcing applications inform the development of new approaches to collective intelligence and social computing on the web? Can we conceptualise specific classes of human computation as instances of different forms of social collaboration? And vice versa: what lessons from the broader domain of the study of large-scale social systems can inform the design of new kinds of systems for crowdsourcing and human computation? Both crowdsourcing and human computation consider humans as distributed task-solvers, with the latter embedding human users as a part of intelligent computational systems. They both leverage human reasoning to solve complex tasks that are easy for individuals but difficult for purely computational approaches (human computation) or for traditional organisational work arrangements (crowdsourcing). Effective realisations of these paradigms typically require participation of a large number of distributed users over the Internet, a careful design of task structures, participation incentives and mechanisms for coordinating and aggregating results of individual participants into collective solutions. Though rarely explicitly addressed as such, social media and related technologies often provide the enabling methods and technologies for the realisation of such models. Examples include crowdsourcing marketplaces (e.g. Amazon mTurk), crowdsourcing service providers (e.g. Microtask, CrowdFlower) or games with a purpose. While centralised platforms are also at the core of "traditional" approaches to collective intelligence (e.g. Wikipedia), attention is increasingly turning to the possibilities of harnessing existing social platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) that already gather huge numbers of users into webs of social relationships. For instance, such relationships allow the development of new kinds of task routing mechanisms (e.g. identifying the best or most trusted participants for a specific task), while social incentives can reflect community-like phenomena (e.g. the reputation economy). This is already leading to experiments such as expert-based crowdsourcing or solutions for task-injection across distributed social platforms. It is also partially reflected in growing research on inferring social influence, attention or trust from online social exchanges with the aim of providing mechanisms for more effective information exchanges or collective problem solving. Socially-aware human computation and crowdsourcing systems call for new work division and execution mechanisms, where the traditional individual "tayloristic" model evolves into a collaborativ labour environment featuring different kinds of communication and collaboration between the users going beyond private exchanges between the task-owner and the task-solver. This begs the question of how such more open, participatory models of collective action can inform the development of new kinds of crowdsourcing and human computation systems and approaches: * Can we conceptualise specific classes of human computation as instances of different forms of social collaboration? * How can we design crowdsourcing and human computation systems where the involvement of a large number of diverse human users as providers, aggregators or "processors" of information leads to outcomes that benefit the entire collective rather than only individual contributors or commissioners of task assignments? * How can the theory of collective action inform the design of such collaborative approaches to socially-aware crowdsourcing and human computation? * What are the different sources of value of the "human touch" that can be brought to bear through such new approaches? We explicitly encourage contributions that address the importance of domain-specific challenges or use cases as well as contributions that enrich a computer science perspective with a user-centered view and system-level social dynamics. Submission Procedure -------------------- The workshop will accept: * Regular research papers (6-8 pages) * Applications / Demonstrators (4 pages) * Position papers (2-4 pages) Submissions should describe the innovative aspects of the work they present, highlighting pros and cons with respect to related work. Demo proposals should describe clearly what will be demonstrated and how the contributions will be illustrated interactively. Optionally, proposals can include a URL that shows a preliminary version of the demo (e.g., screenshots, videos, or a running system). All submissions will be reviewed in a peer-review process by at least two members of the program committee.
