THE ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART (ADA) FEATURES SCENOCOSME Check it out: www.digitalartarchive.at The ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART (ADA) features the artist duo SCENOCOSME (Gregory LASSERRE & Anais MET DEN ANCXT), known for their inimitable poetic language of visualization and sonification of interrelations between humans and nature. The collective explores (invisible) energy flows between living beings and/or between humans and their environments by means of technology and make them perceptible for spectators. Their interactive artworks and choreographic collective performances make attendees share extraordinary sensory experiences. “Lights Contacts” (2010), “Akousmaflore” (2007), “Alsos*” (2006) or “SphèrAléas” (2004) are remarkable immersive environments and acousmatic soundscapes reflecting on connectivity and alternative ways of communication. At the intersection of art and science the artists explore sensor technologies and develop complex software transforming “natural energy” like static, heat or breath into sound and light installations. By contrasting the relationship between the natural world and the man-made Scenocosme’s art highlights the challenges facing our planet and our human responses to it” COLLABORTIVE ARCHIVING OF DIGITAL ART The large assortment of information on SCENOCOSME and hundreds of other leading artists and their artworks were carried out by the artists themselves in assistance with members of the ADA community. The new ADA web tool allows members to archive artist statements, works descriptions, literature, information on exhibitions, high resolution images, blueprints, videos etc. Artists and scholars are invited to contribute actively to the archive and to work collaboratively on the documentation and analysis of digital art. EXPANDED DOCUMENTATION FOR THE NEEDS OF DIGITAL ART Due to the processual, ephemeral, interactive, technology-based and fundamentally context-dependent character of digital art, it is at risk for becoming extinct without an adequate documentation. Therefore, the ADA is based on an expanded concept of documentation, which takes account of the specific conditions of digital art. THE ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART – PIONEER IN THE FIELD Since its foundation in 1999, the Archive of Digital Art (former Database of Virtual Art) has become the most important scholarly online archive for media art. In cooperation with established media artists, researchers, and institutions, it has been documenting the rapidly evolving world of digital art and its related fields for more than a decade and contains today a selection of thousands of artworks at the intersection of art, science, and technology. The postdoctoral fellowship is a fixed-term position; the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in his/her discipline. This position is for a fixed term of 4 years, of which 25% will be comprised of mandatory work, such as teaching and/or administrative tasks. It is not possible for any person to work under more than one fixed term appointment as a postdoctoral fellow for the same institution. --- Project/work tasks The UiB Visualization Group (www.ii.UiB.no/vis) is a new and flourishing research group at the Department of Informatics. Currently two professors, two postdoctoral scholars, several adjunct researchers and a research engineer, four Ph.D. students, and several master’s degree students work on medical visualization, the visualization of data from biology/bioinformatics, the geo-sciences, as well as from other application fields. The activities of the group focus on (a) computer science education with a special emphasis on visualization and computer graphics (we offer a related 120 ECTS master’s program) and (b) visualization research that is internationally acknowledged, while at the same time being oriented at the needs of application fields – primarily considering the local and national context, with lots of interesting opportunities. --- Qualifications and personal qualities * You must have completed a doctoral degree in visualization, or a tightly related field, or have submitted your doctoral thesis for evaluation before expiry of the application deadline. It is a requirement that the doctoral degree has been completed before the decision to appoint can be made. * You must have a strong potential for successful visualization research on an international level. Preferences with respect to selected directions in visualization are welcome as long as they blend well with the ongoing and planned research activities of the group. PARTICIPATION: The workshop is open to all VIS 2014 attendees FOR INQUIRIES: Yvonne Jansen <yvja(a)di.ku.dk> The Desktop computer is dead. Monitors sit on desks, unplugged – hosting layers of Post-It notes or gathering dust as retro emergency low-light mirrors. Visualization is colorful, big, tangible, nosy, interactive, compelling and everywhere. It supports all sorts of creative activity and is key to problem solving in education, science, government and industry. But how? What is your ‘imagined future’ for visualization? We will be exploring possible visualization futures with short but rich scenarios in which designers, practitioners and researchers creatively explore opportunities for `beyond-the-desktop’ visualization. We will be discussing these and using them, and other means of engaging with the future, to develop the community’s perspective on the VIS of tomorrow and beyond. In particular, we want to discuss open questions such as: – how do we envision visualization systems in the next 5, 10, 25+ years? – is it possible that desktop systems will indeed die out and that visualizations will be primarily used through off-desktop technology? – what would be the consequences of a concerted community focus on non- desktop visualization? – which advances would make such a radical change possible? – how and where are the use of beyond-the-desktop displays most appropriate? What datasets are most amenable to different types of displays? Is beyond the desktop right for everyone (e.g., scientists, big data analysts, social networkers, artists, shopping mall users)? – what is the role and interplay of interaction and novel interaction displays in “beyond-the-desktop” settings? Can these two considerations be treated separately as research directions? – what kind of social settings are possible and best supported by “beyond-the-desktop” visualizations? What kind of collaborations are afforded and best supported? – is there a better name for this research theme than “beyond-the-desktop”? What are unifying features of these currently non-standard displays that could lead to a better descriptor for this research direction? can we develop a vision for visualization that helps to set goals for research to come? We will enable a webform to allow submissions such as – imaginary titles and abstracts – short videos – graphical mockups, e.g., in the form of sketches or drawings. WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES The workshop will be split in 3 parts: – short presentations (up to 3min) similar to the fast-forward session to get a quick overview of the richness of ideas – discussion of future perspectives in the area of beyond-desktop visualization. The goal is to identify open problems requiring further investigations, and to converge on a research agenda or a vision for the future of visualization. – hands-on: creation of a wall-sized physical timeline of futures by workshop participants to visualize the outcomes of the discussions together with pre-conference submissions (see possible ways to participate) In conjunction with planned exhibits for the 25 year anniversary of VIS, we also plan to exhibit the created physical hypothetical timeline. After the workshop, this timeline will be publicly presented as a continuation next or near the exhibit for the past 25 years. All conference attendees are then invited to add their own thoughts and visions for the future of visualization. OUTCOMES Before the conference: from 1st October, everybody is invited to post ‘a future’ on this website be it a short scenario, a sketch, a video, or a paper title or abstract for a future article, or … Until 12th October scenarios can be submitted - authors can choose whether they want their contribution to be named or anonymous and whether they would like it to be available on the website or just at the workshop. During the conference: workshop participants work towards the creation of a physical timeline visualizing the variety of proposed futures. Posts from the website will be integrated there as well. After the conference: together with the outcome of the open discussions, the collection of visions will be published in a technical report or summarized in a more prestigious publication (e.g. a visualization viewpoint article) to make it more widely available. We will also explore the opportunity to write a STAR report on beyond-the-desktop visualizations together with interested workshop participants. Every day we are inundated with staggering amounts of digital data. In research for some computational sciences, visualization techniques are the only viable means of extracting information and developing a deep and clear understanding from data at scale. Thus, integrating our visual capacity with technological capabilities has tremendous potential for providing a transformational ability to understanding this data. In this workshop, we will explore the intersection between human perception and large-scale visual analysis through the study of visualization interfaces and interactive displays. This rich intersection includes virtual reality systems, visualization through augmented reality, large-scale visualization systems, novel visualization interfaces, high-resolution interfaces, mobile displays, and visualization display middleware. The VISTech (Visualization Infrastructure & Systems Technology) workshop will provide a forum in which experts in the large-scale visualization technology field and users can come together to discuss state-of-the art technologies for visualization infrastructures and systems. Topics of the workshop include but are not limited to: ● High-resolution displays and interfaces ● Interaction technologies ● Mobile displays ● Virtual reality systems ● Augmented reality ● Ubiquitous displays ● Visualization display middleware ● Large scale visualization systems Papers submitted to this workshop should be in the IEEE format and no longer than 4 pages plus 1 additional page for images. We encourage authors to submit YouTube video up to 3 minutes long and animations of their work.The papers should be original and not previously published. Papers will be refereed and accepted on the basis of their scientific merit and relevance to the workshop topics. Papers presented at the workshop will be archived. We are looking for visual analysis researcher who will be a member of Tableau Research and will work collaboratively with the entire development team on a range of topics similar to the following: * Geographic visualization * Temporal visualization * Node-link visualization * Multiple coordinated displays * Storytelling with data * Human computer interaction * Visual perception related to visual analytics What you’ll be doing… *LI-DA1 As a member of Tableau Research focused on visual analysis, you will select and drive forward a portfolio of research topics relevant to Tableau’s mission to help people see and understand data. You will work collaboratively with everyone at Tableau including engineers, product managers, executives, and designers throughout the planning and development life-cycle. You will be constantly challenged to leverage your creativity and your technical prowess to help everyone at Tableau to innovate. Some of the things you’ll be doing include… * Research a portfolio of topics relevant to Tableau Software * Write academic papers and participate in the academic community (including membership in review committees) * Give talks inside and outside Tableau including at conferences and to customers * Design and implement prototypes to validate research innovations and communicate those innovations to the rest of Tableau * Work directly with developers and feature teams to ensure designs are implemented as useful user experiences * Monitor and report on external research activities in the areas relevant to Tableau * Mentor Tableau research interns * Other duties as assigned Who you are… * Educated. PhD or equivalent in one or more areas relevant to Tableau’s work on databases. * Communicator. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills * Experienced.
