In bringing together researchers from these fields, this workshop will enable participants to present their information, and engage in discussions. --------------- Call for Papers --------------- International Workshop on Multilingual Web Access (MWA 2015), May 19, 2015 http://www.multilingualwebaccess.org/ held In conjunction with the 24th International World Wide Web Conference, Florence, Italy. -------- Motivation and Goals -------- Over the past 25 years, the World Wide Web (WWW) has developed into a truly transnational information medium for users from across the globe. As of July 2013, Asia accounts for the largest share of online users in the world at 48.4%, followed by 21.8% from the Americas, and 19% from Europe. With this global development, the diversity of user languages on the Web has increased dramatically, leading to new challenges and opportunities for information access providers and consumers. The MWA workshop will bring together researchers working on Cross-/Multilingual Search & Discovery, the Multilingual Social Web, as well as the Multilingual Semantic Web, in order to promote the exchange of complementary ideas and applicable/transferrable techniques between these areas. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question. Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information. This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, heat maps, tree maps or specific, map like arrangements of search results. However, most maps are static visualizations made for special purposes, and usually neither interactive nor dynamic. Moreover, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections, nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the “map makers” on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but still far away from being applicable for searching - due to a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands. The focused issue therefore aims at bringing together these two communities in order to discuss the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. Therefore, the leading research questions for this special issue are twofold: How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking in large information spaces? CALL FOR PROPOSALS to host the 7th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology: Re:2017 The Media Art Histories Board invites applications to host the 7th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology. The international conference series, which was inaugurated in 2005 in Banff, Canada, has since been held in several international venues around the globe including Berlin in 2007, Melbourne 2009, Liverpool 2011, Riga 2013 and will be held this fall in Montreal. The conference series aims to engage the growing community of scholars from a range of disciplines including art history, contemporary art practice, art theory, history of science, history of technology, science and technology studies, media studies, image science, visual studies, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology, architecture theory, sound studies, computer science among others to develop and share new research and scholarship in the intersecting fields of the histories of media art, science and technology. However, it is only now that advances in digital fabrication, actuated tangible interfaces, and shape-changing displays can support the emerging area of ‘Data Physicalization’: the study of computer-supported, physical representations of data (i.e., data physicalizations) and their support for cognition, communication, learning, problem solving and decision making. As physical artifacts, data physicalizations can tap more deeply into our perceptual exploration skills than classical computer setups, while their dynamic physicality alleviates some of the main drawbacks of static artifacts by facilitating their crafting, supporting adaptation to different data, and encouraging sharing between different users. This one-day workshop will provide a forum to explore the four primary themes of research in this area: design, implementation, interaction, and evaluation. It will bring together a cross-disciplinary group of experts in Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Visual and Tactile Perception, Tangible User Interfaces, and Shape-Changing Displays. We invite you to submit a 2-4 page position paper, in ACM Extended Abstracts format, that describes current work, future directions, and/or significant challenges in the domain of data physicalization. Invitation to serve as a client for the Information Visualization MOOC at IU

Dear all, We are excited to announce that the Information Visualization MOOC will be taught again in Spring semester 2015 (visit http://ivmooc.cns.iu.edu <http://t.co/DorsP7CA> to see the 2014 version of the course and a list of 2014 clients and projects <http://ivmooc.cns.iu.edu/clients.html>). Student’s learn the theoretical and technical skills to create information visualizations, and then given the opportunity to work with real-world clients and data as a team. You are invited to submit a client project that takes advantage of our students’ diverse skills in programming, design, data analysis and mining, and visualization. We are looking for well-defined projects that can be completed within seven weeks by teams of 4-5 students. Clients are responsible for three tasks: * Provide detailed description of your project and research goals, share data, and state the conditions under which students may publish results, and/or add project results on their resume. * At project launch, clients need to answer 5-10 questions that students might have about the project and data. * At the end of the project, clients are asked to rate—on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (highest quality)—the resulting information visualizations of your data, and provide short feedback to students. As a client, you are welcome to interact in a more substantial ways with any of the student teams.
