Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question. Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information. This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, heat maps, tree maps or specific, map like arrangements of search results. However, most maps are static visualizations made for special purposes, and usually neither interactive nor dynamic. Moreover, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections, nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the “map makers” on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but still far away from being applicable for searching - due to a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands. The focused issue therefore aims at bringing together these two communities in order to discuss the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. Therefore, the leading research questions for this special issue are twofold: How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking in large information spaces? If you're interested, BioVis has two exciting challenges for you to compete in, win prizes, get published, and help move research forward. This year's BioVis contests center around the properties of Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). RNA is commonly thought of as the biological carbon-copy used to carry information from the genome to the protein machinery of life. But, in addition to simply being a symbolic transcription language for the genome, RNA also performs important functions and carries other messages in properties such as its structure. This year's BioVis *Design* challenge poses the question of how to best represent RNA structure, and potentially the panoply of structures that an RNA molecule can form, with the goal of helping researchers understand the similarities and differences between different RNA molecules. This year's BioVis *Data Analysis* challenge takes things one step further, and asks whether you can figure out the structural, or other physical properties of different RNA molecules that predispose some individuals towards disease, and others towards health. If you've got a good idea for the Design challenge, you can test its real-world application in the Data Analysis challenge, and maybe even solve a pressing health question regarding epilepsy! Business Intelligence (BI) is a domain where data, knowledge and users are tightly related. Data in BI are stored in Data Warehouses and are generally large, heterogeneous, geo-localized and time-dependent. Visualisations in BI must be intuitive and must support an interactive, collaborative and ubiquitous discovery process. These visualisations must deal both with the exploration of data and knowledge, and also with the presentation of results to managers. Open Data (OD) share common properties with BI from the data analysis and visualisation points of view. OD represents a recent issue that concerns the free delivery of a huge amount of information produced by public or privateorganizations and other data providers. Such Open Datasets cover various topics including politics, taxes, citizens, cities, health, education etc. The users who wish to explore such datasets are often citizens, journalists, politicians,managers and other data or business analysts. In this area, the visualisations are expected to help the users in their exploration of this huge amount of information. This may concern various aspects of visual and interactive methods (overview of a large collection of Open datasets, details on an dataset, interactive discovery, user interfaces, aesthetics, etc). BI and OD thus represent important challenges in the visualisation domain. The aim of this symposium is precisely to make a state of the art and to contribute to these challenging objectives by covering all aspects of interactive visualisations in BI and OD, from both a theoretical and practical point ofview. EuroRV3: EuroVis Workshop on Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation in Visualization (in conjunction with EuroVis 2015) http://www.eurorvvv.org/ *** Call for Contributions *** The EuroRV3: EuroVis Workshop on Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation in Visualization focuses on the need for reliable visualization. We concentrate on recent and future developments related to the reproducibility of newly-developed visualization approaches, the verification of visualization and data-processing systems, the validation of visualization paradigms, and the effective incorporation of each of these into modern visualizations. The outcome of the two last EuroRV3 workshops was that the visualization community is clearly aware of the need for reproducibility and a vast majority agrees that the topic should be developed much more. However, it can be observed that, in current publications, providing reproducibility is still often limited to the fraction that is needed for the paper to be accepted to a venue. In addition, the variety of possible characteristics and levels of reproducibility, together with the very different paper types in our community, makes it very hard to come up with a strategy to further encourage good reproducibility. In this workshop with the topic "Reproducibility in Practice" we want to develop a good understanding of why there are still papers providing quite limited reproducibility, how these papers differ from papers that achieve much higher reproducibility and how conditions could be changed to overcome complications and the various different pitfalls in this regard. In addition, we want to showcase how good reproducibility can be achieved and what efforts this takes. *** Submission Procedure *** This year’s workshop invites contributions of authors from recent visualization publications about how the topic reproducibility was tackled by the authors in the context of the specific project or paper and why.
