Context: Recent technologies such as Kinect, Wiiboard, Tablet, Joypad, eye tracking devices, etc., enable to record patient's behavior. For medicine, analyzing this behavior is a key to establish efficient diagnostics and better design recovery good practices. To perform a strong diagnostic, data generated by recording devices (body movements, eye movements, etc.) has to be analyzed taking account of the patient background (health problem, personal information, etc.). In this context, therapists are confronted to large amount of heterogeneous data and their analyses require automatic methods. The difficulty lies not in generating but rather in sifting through this mass raw of data in order to discover patterns. This thesis focuses on designing data mining and information visualization techniques to create interfaces helping healthcare professionals to understand the data. Subject: A number of issues associated with the design of such interfaces will be examined in the context of this thesis in order to provide therapists with the tools necessary to perform their analyses. It is of utmost importance that these interfaces be as simple and intuitive as possible, as a misinterpretation of the data due to imperfect interface design could hamper the rehabilitation process. It is for this reason that an in-depth study of knowledge discovery methods must be undertaken by experts in data mining, information visualization and human-computer interaction, in close collaboration with therapists. I am looking for an instructor for Fall 2015 who would teach a class in Information Visualization for the School of Information at San Jose State University. Our programs are delivered in a 100% asynchronous online format so location is unimportant. Fall runs from August 20th to December 8th. The class will be taught as part of our interdisciplinary Advanced Certificate in Big Data. The students will be in a workplace renewal grant - engineers who are retooling. Here is information about the content. This course would focus on the state of the art in the field of information visualization. Topics may include (but are not limited to): the evolution of information visualization, the perceptual properties and design principles of information visualization, different data analysis methods using visualizations, hands-on applications of visualization software and techniques, interaction and interface design issues, and emerging trends such as social visualization and visual analytics. The ultimate goal of this course is to provide the students with a powerful tool to better process, analyze, and communicate information in the specific domain of their own interests. We use the Canvas Learning Management system. You will have an online training class with our Director for Online Learning. The class caps at 30. Salary for an instructor with a Ph.D degree is $6142; for a masters degree: $5149; payable at the end. Biology and biomedicine are examples of areas that in recent years have become increasingly data driven. Information Visualization techniques utilize interactive and visual representations to facilitate the understanding of structures and gaining of insights from large and complex data. Visualization may act as a link between complex biological data and the human interpreter and has, through this, become crucial for gaining insights from biological data. The growing interest in Biological Data Visualization is supported through initiatives such as VizBi (vizbi.org) BioVis (biovis.net) and BiVi (bivi.co). Biological networks, such as metabolic pathways, can be seminal tools in understanding biological functions and processes. However, such pathways are often large and complex, making them difficult to overview and interpret. The gaining of insights may be further obfuscated by the large number of pathways that can be related to a biological phenomena of interest, as well as by substantial amounts of meta-data that have the potential to further increase understanding of the biological process if included in the analysis. Building on the supervisory team’s previous work in multivariate data visualization, biological visualization and bioinformatics this project will address some of the challenges involved in gaining insights and understanding into biological processes, by developing novel interactive visualization methods for exploration of biological pathways. Particularly by investigating how common visual representations of pathways can be extended to facilitate the gaining of further insights into biological phenomena, while improving the usability of such representations and through this support human interpretation and understanding of complex biological phenomena. This project will suit a candidate who has experience of visualization/visual analytics, HCI, data mining and object oriented programming. PhD scholarship in Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization We invite applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in human-computer interaction and information visualization. The candidate will work at the Human-Centered Computing Group at University of Copenhagen (http://www.diku.dk/english/research/HCC) in a research center that offers a unique opportunity to do visualization research in collaboration with leading companies in bio-based production. The candidate will be working in the BIOPRO2 research center (BIO-based PROduction: TOwards the next generation of optimized and sustainable processes, http://biopro.nu<http://biopro.nu/>). The scholarship is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark and will be carried out at the Human-Centered Computing Section at Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen in collaboration between Technical University of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, and world-leading companies in bio-based production. The PhD candidate will be doing user-centered design of visualizations of sensor data and models in bio-based production systems. This relates primarily to research in human-computer interaction, information visualization, and visual analytics. The PhD student will develop prototypes that visualize data efficiently for different stakeholders and evaluate the visualizations both in laboratory studies and in field deployment within the industry partners. == Qualifications == Successful candidates must: * Have a Master's degree in computer science or a field providing equivalent qualifications. * Have completed a Master's thesis within human-computer interaction, information visualization, visual analytics, or similar topic. * Have strong programming skills (Java, JavaScript, C#, or similar). * Have the ability to work independently within an interdisciplinary team and in collaboration with company stakeholders. * If candidates have graduated more than 2 years ago, they must document work experience relevant to the objectives and qualifications mentioned above for the interim period. * Be proficient in English, both in speaking and writing. Nevertheless, new challenges, problems and issues have appeared in the context of knowledge representation in AI that involve the logical manipulation of increasingly large information sets (see for example Semantic Web, the Open Linked Data initiative, Social Networks etc.) Therefore, research into KRR must move towards investigating structures for representation optimally manipulated to perform large scale reasoning, given very new and different constraints to those existing only few years ago. Included in this new generation of KRR systems are graph-based knowledge representation formalisms. Such graph-based techniques have been successfully deployed in different research areas as dedicated formalisms. The advantages of graph-based KRR techniques are three-fold: (1) graphs provide a natural paradigm for modeling domains with a very complex structure; (2) a graph-based knowledge representation allows for a very intuitive graphical explanation of the knowledge reasoning process and (3) a graph-based knowledge representation typically allows for structure-based optimization of the reasoning process. Graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning is thus a growing area of research, spanning across different domains, with more and more important contributions appearing over the last few years. It is the investigation of further developments of KRR graph techniques that we address within this workshop. The workshop welcomes contributions on graph-based representation, query and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Baysian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF/S, SPARQL \& RIF, Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), Euler Diagrams, CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, etc.) from a theoretical and application viewpoint. The papers will be judged from two perspectives: technical and application. Technical results will include graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation mechanisms etc. Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed solutions. Examples of such domains include Semantic Web, Grid Computing, BioInformatics, Multi Agent Systems, Recommender Systems etc. The workshop is expected to bring together people from different research communities that are actively pursuing this line of research. The candidate will be working on an interdisciplinary project between the social sciences lab specializing in Science Studies (LISIS http://ifris.org/en/fiche/lisis/) and (Digiteo Moulon lab - INRIA: http://aviz.fr and https://ilda.saclay.inria.fr/) leader in complex data visualization. The objective of the project is to explore and design software solutions for the interactive visualization of medium-scale multi-level networks. The software should enable users to explore and interact online with a network, as well as on WILDER - INRIA’s very-high-resolution wall-sized visualization platform (https://www.inria.fr/en/centre/saclay/news/giant-screen-for-huge-scientific…) Qualifications required The ideal candidate should have a PhD in Computer Science, and should be proficient in the domain of data visualization. Experience in object-oriented programming (such as C++, C# or Java) and web scripting languages (such as Javascript) is also required. Background knowledge in network analysis is also appreciated, as well as previous experience in network visualization. While not mandatory, both are highly valued.
