However, it is only now that advances in digital fabrication, actuated tangible interfaces, and shape-changing displays can support the emerging area of ‘Data Physicalization’: the study of computer-supported, physical representations of data (i.e., data physicalizations) and their support for cognition, communication, learning, problem solving and decision making. As physical artifacts, data physicalizations can tap more deeply into our perceptual exploration skills than classical computer setups, while their dynamic physicality alleviates some of the main drawbacks of static artifacts by facilitating their crafting, supporting adaptation to different data, and encouraging sharing between different users. This one-day workshop will provide a forum to explore the four primary themes of research in this area: design, implementation, interaction, and evaluation. It will bring together a cross-disciplinary group of experts in Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Visual and Tactile Perception, Tangible User Interfaces, and Shape-Changing Displays. We invite you to submit a 2-4 page position paper, in ACM Extended Abstracts format, that describes current work, future directions, and/or significant challenges in the domain of data physicalization. Ensure your paper describes which of the one or more workshop themes best captures your area of work. Please indicate which of the position paper authors will attend the workshop. Places are limited and we may need to cap the number of attendees per accepted paper. At least one author from each accepted paper must register for the workshop and at least one day of the conference. Dear all, We are excited to announce that the Information Visualization MOOC will be taught again in Spring semester 2015 (visit http://ivmooc.cns.iu.edu <http://t.co/DorsP7CA> to see the 2014 version of the course and a list of 2014 clients and projects <http://ivmooc.cns.iu.edu/clients.html>). Student’s learn the theoretical and technical skills to create information visualizations, and then given the opportunity to work with real-world clients and data as a team. You are invited to submit a client project that takes advantage of our students’ diverse skills in programming, design, data analysis and mining, and visualization. We are looking for well-defined projects that can be completed within seven weeks by teams of 4-5 students. Clients are responsible for three tasks: * Provide detailed description of your project and research goals, share data, and state the conditions under which students may publish results, and/or add project results on their resume. * At project launch, clients need to answer 5-10 questions that students might have about the project and data. * At the end of the project, clients are asked to rate—on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (highest quality)—the resulting information visualizations of your data, and provide short feedback to students. As a client, you are welcome to interact in a more substantial ways with any of the student teams. Covered aspects include the development and evaluation of approaches for visually analyzing software and software systems, including their structure, execution behavior, and evolution. The VISSOFT IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization continues the history of the ACM SOFTVIS Symposium on Software Visualization and the IEEE VISSOFT International Workshop on Visualizing Software for Understanding and Analysis. The conference focuses on visualization techniques that target aspects of software maintenance and evolution, program comprehension, reverse engineering, and reengineering, i.e., how visualization helps professionals to understand, analyze, test and evolve software. We aim to gather tool developers, experts, users, and researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. We seek technical papers, empirical studies, applications, or case studies and provide a platform for presenting novel research ideas and tools. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tool track related to the same list of topics suggested above. Apologies for cross postings. Dear Colleagues, We invite you to participate in the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces 2015 ( http://www.3dui.org ) by submitting a poster. Posters provide an informal but interactive forum in which authors can present their work to symposium attendees during the poster session and during conference breaks. They describe works-in-progress, novel ideas, novel systems, or present the latest implemented applications. Posters are a great way to let others in the 3DUI community know about your work as well as an opportunity to discuss and make potential collaborations! Poster submissions should be within the scope of three-dimensional user interfaces. We would also like to introduce a subtle shift in focus for 3D UI research. Given that this is the 10th annual 3DUI Symposium, and that significant progress has been mode over the years to address the “classic five” low-level interaction tasks of Selection, Manipulation, Navigation, Symbolic Input, and System Control, we strongly encourage posters that attempt to address higher-level tasks that draw on three or more of the lower-level tasks. Topics of the symposium include (but not limited to): * 3D input devices * 3D display and sensory feedback * 3D interaction techniques * 3D user interface metaphors * Mobile 3DUIs * Non-fatiguing 3DUIs * Desktop 3DUIs * 3DUIs for VR and AR * Evaluation methods for 3DUIs * Human perception of 3D interaction * Collaborative 3D interaction * Applications of 3DUIs: Games, entertainment, CAD, education, etc. Authors should submit an extended abstract as a two-page manuscript in the IEEE 3DUI Proceedings format. Graduate Student Positions in Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Analytics, and 3D User Interfaces Wolfgang Stuerzlinger and his lab are looking for several people to join our group for 2015. Positions are limited and highly competitive, so only the best candidates will be considered. Open positions • MSc or PhD student in Visual Analytics • MSc or PhD student in 3D User Interfaces • MSc or PhD student in Human-Computer Interaction Wolfgang Stuerzlinger’s research group specializes in a range of topics in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Virtual Reality (VR). The general goal is user interfaces fit for everyday use. In HCI, we study and design primary user interaction technologies, such as pointing, object group selection and text entry. Furthermore, in the face of increasing popularity of user interfaces that are not 100% reliable, such as speech and gesture recognition, we look at how humans interact with such technologies, and how systems designers can ameliorate limitations. For screens ranging from watches to walls, we work on better methods for user interface creation, with a focus on GUI layout. Additionally, we create and study novel human-in-the-loop systems to facilitate Visual Analytics for Big Data as well as how one can apply the gained insights in predictive systems. In Virtual Reality, we research 3D pointing, design object selection, manipulation and navigation methods across many VR input and output technologies. Furthermore, we investigate 3D user interfaces that combine the best of the 2D and 3D worlds. Moreover, we work on new 3D tracking and immersive display systems, including CAVEs, towards improved VR experiences.
