Call for Papers 1st International Symposium on Big Data Visual Analytics (BDVA) 22-25th September 2015, CSIRO, Hobart, Australia In the last decade Big Data Analytics has become a major decision support factor in industry and government organisations. Visual Analytics is the enabling science for effective exploration of big data through meaningful visualisations and interactive user interfaces. Understanding the multidisciplinary nature, including user querying, powerful analytics, machine learning, visualisation, human-computer interaction, perception and cognition, is critical for Visual Analytics to be effectively deployed. BDVA’15 The symposium will be held at the beautiful Hobart harbour site of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on 22-25th September 2015. BDVA’15 will host an exciting programme with internationally renowned keynote speakers, special sessions, and a day of complimentary hands-on workshops. BDVA’15 will be the first of its kind with the aims to - bring together leading experts from all relevant scientific domains to advance the understanding of visual analytics of complex, big, and dynamic data; - provide an exciting venue for researchers to network and establish national and international collaborations; and - provide early career scientists with an inspiring event allowing them to connect to relevant experts in the field. EuroVis 2015 is the 17th annual scientific gathering on visualization jointly organized by the Eurographics Working Group on Data Visualization and the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee. WHERE: In beautiful Cagliari, the largest city on the island of Sardinia, Italy. WHEN: May 25-29, 2015. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 23:59 GMT, Wednesday February 18th, 2015. WHAT TO SUBMIT EuroVis 2015 features a short paper track to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. All submissions must be original works that have not been published previously in any conference proceedings, magazine, journal, or edited book. A EuroVis short paper describes a more focused and concise research contribution and is likely to have a smaller -- yet still significant -- scope of contribution than a full paper. REVIEWING PROCESS Short papers will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage double-blind process by an international program committee. The post will be based in the School of Computer Science. The candidate will work on a cutting-edge visualization project that explores hybrid symbolic-graphical ways to represent information. The project builds upon previous success of our group in this area (see http://www.fatfonts.org and http://www.transmogrifiers.org) and intends to significantly transform how people and professionals in a wide range of areas acquire and understand information. The candidate will help design and program a system that involves the creation of 2D graphics related to typography (letter forms), and to help with the design, execution and analysis of experiments regarding user perception of displayed text. Knowledge, experience and interest in any or several of the following areas would be an advantage: typography and typeface design, web services implementation, information visualization, perception, experiment design, reading. The Research Fellow will be fully integrated within the School of Computer Science and the St Andrews HCI group (SACHI). SACHI (http://sachi.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk) has over twenty members, is strongly active in the international community organising conferences such as UIST 2013, ITS 2013 and MobileHCI 2014. We regularly publish in the leading international HCI venues including CHI, UIST, IUI, AVI, and are featured in the press (e.g., New Scientist, MIT technology review). As a group we have several funded projects, organise an international seminar series, host visitors regularly and maintain a HCI lab with a wide range of equipment. As a HCI group we encourage group-wide collaborative research so there are opportunities to participate in in other projects, be involved with undergraduate and postgraduate supervision, in addition to working on emerging topics of interest in the group. The group constitutes a nurturing environment with a strong focus on the personal and professional development of its members. As a fellow you will be expected to work on the development of your career as an academic and researcher and will receive both formal and informal mentorship. You should have a good honours (undergraduate) degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Digital Media Design or a related discipline. It is essential that you have strong software development skills. In addition you must demonstrate that you are able to manage work responsibly under tight deadlines while leading the day-to-day work and development. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Visualization for Biology at Harvard University The Visual Computing Group (VCG) in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University seeks motivated postdoctoral fellows with a Ph.D. in computer science/engineering, bioinformatics, or a related field to work on varied research projects in visual data analysis. Potential candidates should possess a strong background in the fields of visualization and visual analytics, bioinformatics or similar areas to conduct visualization projects applied to biological and biochemical data. In addition to working closely with scientists, industry partners, and graduate students on research projects, the candidate is expected to actively participate in writing grant proposals. Watson Research Center is looking for research scientists with interest in the field of data visualization and visual analytics, to design next-generation user interfaces for making sense of big data, particularly in the healthcare domain. The Research Scientist will be working alongside visualization, machine learning, and medical researchers performing cutting-edge research in data-driven medicine. The ideal candidate should possess or be nearing completion of a doctorate in computer science or related field with a track record in interactive data visualization and visual analytics research, demonstrated with publications at premier venues, including IEEE InfoVis, IEEE VAST, ACM CHI, and ACM UIST. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong technical skills who can generate highly novel ideas and execute them rapidly. The researcher is expected to contribute significantly to the team in developing new visualizations, leveraging big data from longitudinal electronic medical records, patient-controlled devices, and genomic data. S/he should also have strong system design and development skills and should be able to deploy software services individually and as part of an extended team. Dear Colleagues, Clemson University is accepting applications for participation in the REU Site: Research Experience for Undergraduates in Collaborative Data Visualization Applications for summer 2015. REU Site funded by NSF ACI Award 1359223. Who should apply: all undergraduate students, enrolled in an undergraduate university/college; priority consideration will be given to members of underrepresented groups and students with limited research resources at their home institutions; however, all students with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply. What majors will be considered: Visualization plays a key role in all areas of research; all academic majors are encouraged to apply.
