IEEE VIS 2014 http://ieeevis.org/ CALL FOR POSTERS - PRACTITIONER EXPERIENCES TRACK http://ieeevis.org/year/2014/info/call-participation/practitioner-experienc… We invite the submission of posters describing state-of-the-art, real world experiences in industry, government, NGOs, social agencies, etc. with designing, building, deploying and evaluating new information visualization and visual analytic systems. Posters should present case studies of success, failure, experimentation, design, development, methodology, best practice lessons and other topics relevant to a commercial, government or operational context. Discussion could include one or more of what were the business or service objectives, who were the users, what were their needs, what were the design objectives, what technology was developed, what was the result, how did it perform, what were the lessons learned and what are the next steps? No need to name specific clients, customers or programs, you can use indicators such as 'a large investment bank' or 'a top 10 pharmaceutical company' or 'health services'. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your results, get feedback from the VIS community, and brainstorm new ideas relevant to your situation. Poster presentations will be an integral part of the conference, with a session for interactive discussion between presenters and attendees, plus a fast-forward presentation track where authors can orally present a brief summary of their work to all conference attendees. Note that, in order to maintain interactive and exciting poster presentations, we require at least one presenter per accepted poster to attend the conference. The most important publication criteria are originality, quality of presentation and relevance. Poster submissions must be in English. The submission must include a 2-page abstract, plus a draft of the final poster. A one paragraph summary may be in another language of your choice. Please be aware that the poster draft is mandatory. All submitted materials must be in PDF format with embedded fonts. Two-page abstracts will be included in the proceedings, and therefore must be formatted using the IEEE VIS (USB only) format described at http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Track/vis-menu.html SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS All poster submissions for the IEEE VIS Practitioner Experiences Track should be submitted via email to industry(a)ieeevis.org. How to efficiently and effectively support implicit and/or explicit Crowdsourcing and Human Computation tasks is still an open research question. The goal of the CrowdUI workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners in the diverse fields related to the integration, interaction and visualization of data to explore the feasibility of using and combining different approaches to create effective user interfaces and usage experience for applications relying on, or producing crowdsourced data. Recent years witnessed an explosion in the number and variety of data crowdsourcing initiatives. From OpenStreetMap to Amazon Mechanical Turk, developers and practitioners have been striving to create user interfaces able to effectively and efficiently support the creation, exploration, and analysis of crowdsourced information. A representative example comes from the fields of Smart Cities and Human Mobility: there, new breeds of (mobile) human computation applications and games-with-a-purpose employ new interaction paradigms for the collection and retrieval of urban-related data. On the other hand, analysts and other urban stakeholders are provided with application that fused multiple datasources together in order to support sensemaking and knowledge-extraction processes for decision- making. The extensive usage of crowdsourcing techniques brings a major change of paradigm with respect to traditional user interface for data collection and exploration, as effectiveness, speed, and interaction quality concerns play a central role in supporting very demanding incentives, including monetary ones. At this purpose, cross fertilization between different disciplines is mandatory: existing approaches for visual interfaces design and implementation, data visualization and interaction methodologies, crowdsourced data management, and human computation task design should be merged with the purpose of identifying the best interaction and visualization paradigms for crowd-driven data collection, analysis, and exploration applications. Traditional interaction modalities may not be sufficient to select and manipulate multiple objects or data points or have the potential to interfere with users' sense of immersion or workflow. Additionally, there is a strong interest in scaling interfaces from the desktop display to higher immersive display systems. As a result, cost, availability, and familiarity all play a role in designing interaction. Solutions tend to be focused on separately in these communities, however this will serve as a common forum to openly discuss these issues and ideas for solutions. The IEEE VR 2014 Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and users from multiple communities in Virtual Environments, 3D User Interfaces, and Immersive Visualizations to discuss issues and share ideas that relate to the process, interaction modalities, hardware, software, interface constraints, and users' goals and workflow as they relate to the problem of interacting with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects defined as a volume in virtual environments. This half-day workshop will provide a forum for presentations and energized discussions to initial new and exciting developments in this area as well as connections for collaborations among multiple research disciplines. The program will consist of planned presentations of accepted papers and focused lively discussions. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to scholars and researchers in the field who will provide constructive comments about their work. The doctoral consortium is implemented as a student mentoring program that introduces students to senior researchers in the relevant fields. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see SUBMISSION INFORMATION for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected to be presented at a dedicated workshop as part of the conference. Promising, but less well-developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. Each student with an accepted application will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student's work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium. These diagrams have become the foundations of various visual languages and have notably facilitated the modelling of, and logical reasoning about, complex systems. Over the years, they have been extensively used in areas such as biosciences, business, criminology and national security to intuitively visualize relationships and relative cardinalities of sets. This widespread adoption has allowed analysis of complex collections of data. The workshop will cover all aspects of Euler diagram research, including, but not limited to: Theoretical Advances: drawability, layouts, logic, reasoning, Software Support: diagram generation, automated reasoning, data exploration, Real-World Applications: system modelling, information visualization, education, Cognition and Perceptual Principles: readability, aesthetics and evaluation, including comparison to other representations. Recently, there have been significant advances in all of the above areas. This workshop of peer-reviewed submissions will afford the growing Euler diagrams community the opportunity to present and discuss new research, and share multi-interdisciplinary expertise. We envisage that this will stimulate collaborations on current and future research needs. This will be the second time the workshop has run as part of the Diagrams conference series and the fourth Euler diagrams workshop (after successful workshops in 2012, 2004 and 2005). The workshop will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds, from both academia and industry including those with expertise in mathematic, computer science, artificial intelligence, information design, visualization, human-computer interaction, as well as end-users from various application area. We solicit submissions on the topics mentioned above, in the following forms: full papers (15 pages), consisting of: - original research - surveys short papers (7 pages), consisting of: - systems descriptions - software demonstrations - position statements - original research contributions All submissions should be in Springer’s LNCS format. EXPERIENCE TRACK Peer reviewed papers showcasing innovative use of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalisation, exploring the benefits and challenges of applying user modeling techniques and adaptation technology in real-life applications and contexts. Papers will be assessed based on the novelty of the application, the potential impact from the utilization of user modeling and adaptation technologies in the specific case, and the usefulness of the presented experience for extending the UMAP research and application. - Long experience papers (12 pages): Long experience papers should present substantive 'in-use' case for UMAP research. They should place the work within the field, clearly indicate the novelty of the application, and present the impact and significance of the experience to advance the UMAP research and application. - Short experience papers (6 pages): Short experience papers should present an original and highly promising application of user modeling and adaptation technologies, whose merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity and extensive user validation. RESEARCH TRACK Peer reviewed, original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization. [Apologies for cross-posting] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd International Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction (WIVI 2014) at IEEE Virtual Reality 2014, Minneapolis, MN, USA Saturday, March 29, 2014 1:30pm-5:00pm There is a growing interest in interaction research of volumes for immersive virtual environments and immersive visualizations. Traditional interaction modalities may not be sufficient to select and manipulate multiple objects or data points or have the potential to interfere with users’ sense of immersion or workflow. Additionally, there is a strong interest in scaling interfaces from the desktop display to higher immersive display systems. As a result, cost, availability, and familiarity all play a role in designing interaction. Solutions tend to be focused on separately in these communities, however this will serve as a common forum to openly discuss these issues and ideas for solutions. The IEEE VR 2014 Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and users from multiple communities in Virtual Environments, 3D User Interfaces, and Immersive Visualizations to discuss issues and share ideas that relate to the process, interaction modalities, hardware, software, interface constraints, and users’ goals and workflow as they relate to the problem of interacting with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects defined as a volume in virtual environments. This half-day workshop will provide a forum for presentations and energized discussions to initial new and exciting developments in this area as well as connections for collaborations among multiple research disciplines. The program will consist of planned presentations of accepted papers and focused lively discussions. Possible issues for discussion, but not limited to, are natural user interfaces, interaction modalities, selection, manipulation, quality of immersion, physical and cognitive fatigue, low-cost immersive systems (input and output), user goals and workflow, and analysis tools. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBMISSIONS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We invite novel submissions (papers up to 6 pages, minimum of 2 pages) describing positions, preliminary research or evaluation results, prototypes, design work, works-in-progress or applications focus on interaction with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects representing a volume in virtual environments. Papers should be prepared using the IEEE Computer Society format. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and authors of accepted papers will be invited to present at the workshop. Demonstrations of prototype interfaces, interaction modalities, and interactive immersive systems are highly encouraged.
