Apologies for cross-posting. ========================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS 1st Workshop on Personalized Search: From Search Engines to Exploratory Search Systems (PESE2014) In conjunction with UMAP2014 7-11 July 2014- Aalborg, Denmark http://www.pese2014.com Submission Deadline: April 15, 2014 ========================================================================== It is widely accepted that personalized search is extremely powerful when facing realities such as the increasing amount of information available, the potential ambiguity of searched queries, or the between-users and between-tasks differences in search behaviors. Available information retrieval systems are particularly optimized for retrieving facts or answering specific questions. However, when the aim of the search is to learn or investigate, the systems are far from being optimized. In opposition to search for facts, exploratory search involves a continuous change of the state of the users, while they explore, learn or investigate. Consequently, relevance of items is no longer a static concept, as the perception of relevance varies according to the learning or investigation phase. Therefore, user modeling in exploratory search systems need to find mechanisms to track, recognize, or even predict perception of relevance, which is continuously evolving while in the search task. The workshop will focus on challenges, trends and solutions of personalizing search tasks. We aim to particularly discuss personalization in exploratory search scenarios, yet we enthusiastically welcome the discussion of any kind of personalized search. The workshop aims to bring together researchers from multiple fields such as information retrieval, user modeling, exploratory search, information visualization, recommender systems, and psychophysiology, among others. TOPICS OF INTEREST We invite original contributions in a variety of areas related to personalized search, especially in the areas related with exploratory search. --------------- Call for Papers --------------- The 1st International Workshop on Personalised Multilingual Information Access (PMIA 2014) http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~steichen/PMIA2014 held in conjunction with the 22nd Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2014), Aalborg, Denmark, July 7-11, 2014. -------- Overview -------- With the unrelenting rise in global information production and usage, systems increasingly need to handle 1) a growing variety of user differences (including language, culture, situational context), and 2) heterogeneous and multilingual information sources. This full-day workshop aims tackle these challenges by bringing together researchers working on cross-/multi-lingual information access, personalisation for web and hypermedia, personalised search, information seeking, multilingual interfaces, multilingual semantic web, and recommender systems. The aim is to share, discuss, and combine ideas for novel solutions that support users according to their particular language abilities, as well as other characteristics (e.g. culture, domain expertise) and contexts (e.g. intent, topic) that influence what and how information should be retrieved, composed, and presented. The workshop aims to both advance the current state of the art in personalised multilingual information access, as well as to develop a detailed roadmap that identifies the most pressing current and future research challenges (e.g. novel information access interfaces, evaluation of complex systems). These diagrams have become the foundations of various visual languages and have notably facilitated the modelling of, and logical reasoning about, complex systems. Over the years, they have been extensively used in areas such as biosciences, business, criminology and national security to intuitively visualize relationships and relative cardinalities of sets. This widespread adoption has allowed analysis of complex collections of data. The workshop will cover all aspects of Euler diagram research, including, but not limited to: Theoretical Advances: drawability, layouts, logic, reasoning, Software Support: diagram generation, automated reasoning, data exploration, Real-World Applications: system modelling, information visualization, education, Cognition and Perceptual Principles: readability, aesthetics and evaluation, including comparison to other representations. Recently, there have been significant advances in all of the above areas. This workshop of peer-reviewed submissions will afford the growing Euler diagrams community the opportunity to present and discuss new research, and share multi-interdisciplinary expertise. We envisage that this will stimulate collaborations on current and future research needs. This will be the second time the workshop has run as part of the Diagrams conference series and the fourth Euler diagrams workshop (after successful workshops in 2012, 2004 and 2005). The workshop will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds, from both academia and industry including those with expertise in mathematic, computer science, artificial intelligence, information design, visualization, human-computer interaction, as well as end-users from various application area. We solicit submissions on the topics mentioned above, in the following forms: full papers (15 pages), consisting of: - original research - surveys short papers (7 pages), consisting of: - systems descriptions - software demonstrations - position statements - original research contributions All submissions should be in Springer’s LNCS format. We are pleased to announce that Atsushi Shimojima will give the keynote talk, entitled "Euler systems as feature indicator systems". Atsushi Shimojima is Professor of Culture and Information Science at Doshisha University in Japan. His research so far has been focused on applying semantical analysis of diagrammatic systems to make predictions on their cognitive potentials and verifying these predictions on the basis of psychological experimentation. A good example of this coupling of semantic analysis and cognitive science is found in his recent publication with Yasuhiro Katagiri in the journal, Cognitive Science, entitled "An Eye-Tracking Study of Exploitations of Spatial Constraints in Diagrammatic Reasoning". For the first time, the symposium will be held as a special interest group meeting at ISMB in Boston, MA, USA. The Symposium on Biological Data Visualization (BioVis) is an international and interdisciplinary event for presenting peer-reviewed scientific work on all aspects of visualization in biology. The symposium brings together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in problems in biological data visualization as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. We are looking for contributions on all aspects of visualization in biology, from molecular to cell, tissue, organism and population biology. Possibilities of contribution are full scientific papers, scientific posters, a data contest, and a redesign contest. All papers accepted to the conference will be considered for publication in BMC Bioinformatics, as part of a thematic issue on Biological Data Visualization, associated with the conference. In addition, all accepted papers to the conference will be indexed through the IEEE Digital Library. IMPORTANT DATES Paper submissions: March 15th 2014 Data Analysis Contest submissions: May 1st 2014 Redesign Contest submissions: May 1st 2014 Poster submissions: May 24th 2014.
