About MediViz 2014 MediViz is a forum for the presentation of original papers in the theory and applications of visualization to biomedical and biomolecular data and processes. The symposium covers all aspects of visualization, visual analytics and issues affecting interaction with big data from the medical field. We encourage the submission of papers covering novel techniques, old techniques applied in novel ways, new methods, interesting applications and in-depth surveys. MediViz has evolved rapidly from its original concentration purely on medical visualization and is now a leading interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of ideas and results on visualization in the broader interdisciplinary biomedical sciences pushing forward the boundaries of modern medicine. "RE-CREATE: Theories, Methods and Practices of Research and Creation in the Histories of Media Arts and Sciences" will address the central question of what theories, methodologies and techniques can be used to understand past, present and indeed, future paradigms of creative material practice involving technologies within research contexts from a historical and critical point of view. This is a timely question for the MAH conferences as the issue of how material based practices within technical culture create new knowledge has been explicit and central to the historical roots of media art, design, science and technology. After Riga 2013 this fall, Liverpool 2011, Melbourne 2009, Berlin 2007 and Banff 2005, the Media Art Histories board is pleased to grant the 10th Anniversary conference to Montreal. Ben =========================== CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ========================= In conjunction with the 22nd Conference on User Modelling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2014) Aalborg, Denmark, July 7-11, 2014 http://um.org/umap2014/?q=callforworkshops http://um.org/umap2014 ================================================================================= UMAP 2014 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modelling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from Industry and academia. We welcome proposals for half-day and full-day workshops. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: - Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; such workshops may wish to ask participants to submit a white paper or position statement. - Mini-conferences on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation. =============== PROPOSAL FORMAT =============== The workshop proposals should be PDF documents not exceeding 5 pages, submitted by email to the workshop chairs. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Workshop title and acronym - Workshop chair(s), including affiliation, email address, homepage, and experiences in organizing such events - Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics - Motivation on why the topic is of particular interest at this time - Workshop format, discussing the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion - Intended audience and expected number of participants - List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal) - Requested duration (half day or full day) - Past versions of the workshop, including URLs as well as submission and acceptance statistics. Additionally, we strongly suggest to have organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that attracts various types of contributions and ensures rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops will prepare a workshop web site containing the call for papers and detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline. The organizers will be responsible for their own reviewing process, publicity, and publishing electronic proceedings (e.g., on the CEUR-WS website). Call for Papers CROSSWORLDS: THEORY, DEVELOPMENT, & EVALUATION OF SOCIAL TECHNOLOGY Monday 30th June and July 1st, 2014 Chemnitz, Germany Chemnitz University of Technology www.tu-chemnitz.de www.crossworlds.info Organizers: Research Training Group Crossworlds, Department of Computer Science and Institute for Media Research We invite researchers from various disciplines to submit short papers to CrossWorlds 2014, the 1st international conference on theory, development, and evaluation of social technology. Social technologies include both technologies that directly interact with users (e.g. social robots, virtual agents, assistance systems) and technologies that facilitate the interaction between two or more users (e.g. computer mediated communication, multiplayer games, multitouch tables). Digital technologies have become an inherent part of our society, thus evolving into social actors themselves. This development changed the focus of research from questioning the general potential of technologies to more specific issues. Research from different disciplines addresses topics from modeling social aspects of technology to the design of human-computer interfaces. Following these focused approaches, it becomes even more important to understand the emerging connections between users, contexts and social technologies. The conference addresses this issue and provides a platform for vital discussions about different aspects of social technology. To enable a broad debate on the subject, approaches from various disciplines, methods and perspectives are encouraged. Presentations may feature algorithms, technology, implemented systems, empirical research, and theoretical considerations. Conference topics include (but are not limited to): • What makes social technology social and intelligent and which procedures can be employed? • How can we model social behavior theoretically and practically? • Do we need new methods? How can we assess social interaction in the context of technology usage and development? • Which methodological approaches are appropriate for evaluation? Can social technology evaluate itself? • How can we account for ethical issues as well as non-affirmative and critical approaches in HCI? • How can social technology be employed to catalyse interaction between users in non-virtual space? • How can the design of social technology be carried out interdisciplinarily? • How do developers’ tacit knowledge and concepts of sociality affect the design of social technologies? • How do different degrees of virtuality shape social interaction? • How can social technology motivate user interaction and interaction between users (e.g. gamification, proxemics, mobile interaction)? • How can virtual and augmented reality be designed to create (virtual) sociality? • How can social technology account for user needs? In which ways can systems act proactively? • How can we shape user experience of social technologies? How important is it for social technology to be entertaining? • How can computer based learning be facilitated by social technologies? SUBMISSION GUIDELINES We invite you to submit short papers (PDF, between 10.000-25.000 characters including spaces, figure captions, but excluding references) to the program committee (crossworlds2014(a)tu-chemnitz.de) no later than 31.01.2014. The submissions will be subject to peer reviews. Please make sure, that you remove any author information including author names and references as well as acknowledgments and funding information. However, you should send your author and contact information on a separate cover page for the program committee. Papers should make absolutely clear what the current status of the proposed work is. A preference is given to finished work ready for presentation (note: this also includes theoretical/conceptual papers, if the concept itself is the main subject of presentation). By submitting a paper the authors agree to personally present their research at the conference. Conference Papers will not be published/indexed, but are electronically distributed to the conference attendees. Apologies for cross posting ---------- Call for Workshop Proposals ---------- Diagrams 2014 - The 8th International Conference on the Theory and Application of Diagrams Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia, July 28 - August 1, 2014 ** Workshop Proposal Submission Deadline Extended to December 20 ** In conjunction with the Diagrams conference, workshops will be held. Prospective workshop organizers are invited to submit a workshop proposal for review. The goal of the workshops is to facilitate discussions on more focused areas within the wide coverage provided by the main conference. In addition, our hope is that the informal setting allows for more discussion and provides an outlet for research that is promising but still under development. Workshops should be either 1 day or half a day in length and they will run either side the main program, on 28th of July 2014 or 1st of August 2014. The authors of the accepted proposals will become the organizers of their respective workshops.
