INDUSTRY PAPERS Industry papers (up to 2 pages) address topics which are particularly relevant to the industrial world and are not necessarily intended to present research work only. Preferably, they are co-authored by at least one person from industry. Contributions concerning (amongst others) challenging research and development, innovative business cases, market insights, industrial research strategy, showcases and case studies, best practices and lessons learned, are welcomed. Accepted submissions will be included in the Adjunct Proceedings of the Conference. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AVI 2014 will be a forum for workshops on emerging as well as established topics relevant to interface research and practice. The aims of workshops are to offer an opportunity to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion, to develop understanding, to exchange experiences, to build research communities and to pave the ground towards future developments. Workshops should ideally foster discussion and exchange rather than being miniaturized conference sessions. Workshops will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. The extended abstract of the workshops and a selection of the best position papers will appear in the conference proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. Business Intelligence (BI) is a domain where data, knowledge and users are tightly related. Data in BI are stored in Data Warehouses and are generally large, heterogeneous, geo-localized and time-dependent. Visualisations in BI must be intuitive and must support an interactive, collaborative and ubiquitous discovery process. These visualisations must deal both with the exploration of data and knowledge, and also with the presentation of results to managers. Open Data (OD) share common properties with BI from the data analysis and visualisation points of view. OD represents a recent issue that concerns the free delivery of a huge amount of information produced by public or private organizations and other data providers. Such Open Datasets cover various topics including politics, taxes, citizens, cities, health, education etc. The users who wish to explore such datasets are often citizens, journalists, politicians, managers and other data or business analysts. In this area, the visualisations are expected to help the users in their exploration of this huge amount of information. This may concern various aspects of visual and interactive methods (overview of a large collection of Open datasets, details on an dataset, interactive discovery, user interfaces, aesthetics, etc). BI and OD thus represent important challenges in the visualisation domain. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the UMAP series, each paper will have three reviews by program committee members and a meta-review presenting the reviewers’ consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. EXPERIENCE TRACK Peer reviewed papers showcasing innovative use of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalisation, exploring the benefits and challenges of applying user modeling techniques and adaptation technology in real-life applications and contexts. Papers will be assessed based on the novelty of the application, the potential impact from the utilization of user modeling and adaptation technologies in the specific case, and the usefulness of the presented experience for extending the UMAP research and application. - Long experience papers (12 pages): Long experience papers should present substantive ‘in-use’ case for UMAP research. They should place the work within the field, clearly indicate the novelty of the application, and present the impact and significance of the experience to advance the UMAP research and application. - Short experience papers (6 pages): Short experience papers should present an original and highly promising application of user modeling and adaptation technologies, whose merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity and extensive user validation. RESEARCH TRACK Peer reviewed, original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization. Papers will be assessed based on the originality and significance of the presented contribution to the research field, as well as their technical soundness and overall readability. - Long research papers (12 pages): Long research papers should present original reports of substantive new research. They should place the work within the field, and clearly indicate its innovative aspects and its significance. - Short research papers (6 pages): Short research papers should present original and highly promising research, whose merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity and technical validation. SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION Papers must be formatted according to Springer’s LNCS style guidelines ( http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) and not exceed the page length, as specified above. The long and short paper categories will be strictly kept apart in the submission and review process. Accepted papers will be distributed to conference attendees, and also published by Springer in both online and printed conference proceedings. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper there. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AVI 2014 will be a forum for workshops on emerging as well as established topics relevant to interface research and practice. The aims of workshops are to offer an opportunity to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion, to develop understanding, to exchange experiences, to build research communities and to pave the ground towards future developments. Workshops should ideally foster discussion and exchange rather than being miniaturized conference sessions. Workshops will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. The extended abstract of the workshops and a selection of the best position papers will appear in the conference proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. === Next MEDIA ART HISTORIES Conference 2015 in MONTREAL ! === We are pleased to officially announce that the next MEDIA ART HISTORIES Conference will be held in MONTREAL, November 2015. "RE-CREATE: Theories, Methods and Practices of Research and Creation in the Histories of Media Arts and Sciences" will address the central question of what theories, methodologies and techniques can be used to understand past, present and indeed, future paradigms of creative material practice involving technologies within research contexts from a historical and critical point of view. This is a timely question for the MAH conferences as the issue of how material based practices within technical culture create new knowledge has been explicit and central to the historical roots of media art, design, science and technology. After Riga 2013 this fall, Liverpool 2011, Melbourne 2009, Berlin 2007 and Banff 2005, the Media Art Histories board is pleased to grant the 10th Anniversary conference to Montreal. RE-CREATE will be hosted by the Hexagram Centre for Research-Creation in Media Art and Technology at Concordia University and the UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) in collaboration with McGill University (Department of Art History and Communication Studies; Media@McGill; * CIRMMT-Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music and Media Technology).
