PRELIMINARY CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS AVI 2014 – International Working Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces In cooperation with SIGCHI Italy ACM-SIGCHI, ACM-SIGMM, ACM SIGWEB (pending confirmation) May 27-30, 2014 - Como, Italy http://avi2014.deib.polimi.it The 12th International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI 2014) will be held in Como (Italy) at the campus of Politecnico di Milano, from May 27th to 30th, 2014. Started in 1992 in Rome, AVI has become a biannual appointment for a wide International community of experts with a broad range of backgrounds, who share the interest in the investigation, design, development, and evaluation of innovative interactive solutions impacting our world at individual and societal level. Through more than two decades, the Conference has contributed to the progress of Human-Computer Interaction, offering a forum to present and disseminate new technological results, new paradigms and new visions for interaction and interfaces. AVI 2014 offers a wide variety of submission types to suit many types of interests and works. They include full and short research papers, demos, industry papers, and workshops. Theoretical and formal approaches, novel methodologies, domain-specific applications, empirical studies, new technological solutions, and industrial achievements fit well into the framework of the conference. INDUSTRY PAPERS Industry papers (up to 2 pages) address topics which are particularly relevant to the industrial world and are not necessarily intended to present research work only. Preferably, they are co-authored by at least one person from industry. Contributions concerning (amongst others) challenging research and development, innovative business cases, market insights, industrial research strategy, showcases and case studies, best practices and lessons learned, are welcomed. Accepted submissions will be included in the Adjunct Proceedings of the Conference. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AVI 2014 will be a forum for workshops on emerging as well as established topics relevant to interface research and practice. The aims of workshops are to offer an opportunity to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion, to develop understanding, to exchange experiences, to build research communities and to pave the ground towards future developments. Workshops should ideally foster discussion and exchange rather than being miniaturized conference sessions. Workshops will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. The extended abstract of the workshops and a selection of the best position papers will appear in the conference proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. The VGTC Scholars will blog and host discussions on the new VGTC.org website, to enliven the community through raising topics which are on the forefront of research or important to the community. Scholars will also blog about VGTC-sponsored conferences they attend. Each Scholar will be recognized on the new VGTC website (launching soon), and receive a remuneration of US $350. Scholars will be expected to each post at least 4 blog articles per year. Terms are for one year renewable. This is a great opportunity to get your name out there as a recognized innovative thinker and community builder! We've made available the CiteVis system that presents data about the citations of and among IEEE InfoVis Conference papers. The tool can be found at http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii/citevis. It allows you to see the number of Google Scholar citations that papers have received, when papers cite other papers, Best Paper award winners, and papers of particular authors or about particular topics. Please feel free to try it out and explore the data. We also have made available the data set driving the visualization so that others can use that data in their own work. --John

The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the Department of Computer Science are looking for a skilled DOCTORAL STUDENT The position is initially offered for four years with a 4-month trial period. The Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki welcomes applications for a doctoral student in Human-Computer Interaction in particular: 1) Multimodal Interaction, for example gesture, touch, eye gaze 2) Mobile urban Augmented Reality for Cultural Access 3) Interactive Visualisation for Exploratory Search.
