Dear colleagues, I am very happy to be able to announce a major update of the InfoVis:Wiki (http://www.infovis-wiki.net) We used the time in summer to revamp the system, cleanup all spam and introduced a number of new anti-spam measures that hopefully keep the wiki much cleaner in the future... Thanks for using and contributing to the wiki! We are hiring researchers who specialize in the visualization of spatial and spatio-temporal data and tools for visual analytics, exploratory data analysis, problem solving, and decision making. The successful candidate will develop novel interactive systems for visual analysis and communication that leverage a combination of compelling visualization and data analysis tools in order to gain actionable intelligence and insights from large data collections. Research will be conducted in the context of industry data and challenges, such as transportation, energy, social media analytics and effective natural resource management. In these domains, real-time, interactive, and incremental visualization tools are of special interest. The ideal candidate will be familiar with visualization programming environments such as IBM ILOG Visualization Software, Processing, HTML5, dojo, Java, Adobe Flex, and a basic knowledge of data mining and data analytics techniques. The successful research candidate must have demonstrated ability to define research plans, carry out leading research, and publish research results through professional journals, academic conferences, and patents. IEEE vgTC Visualization Pioneers Group Gathering at IEEE VIS 2013

IEEE Computer Society Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (vgTC) has recently established the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG, http://www.vgtc.org/vpg.html) VPG will host its first member exclusive reception on Monday, Oct 14 at the SEAR Restaurant Atlanta (http://www.searatlanta.com/) located at the IEEE VIS 2013 conference hotel. To become a member of the VPG, one simply needs to have at least 20 years of contributions to some aspect of visualization and visual analytics. The membership fee is $US 50.00 per year and will be collected at the door of the reception. Additionally, there will be a VPG promotional table set up at the IEEE VIS conference lobby on Monday to accept membership applications. VPG will accept only U.S. bank checks or U.S. dollars for the membership dues. Each paper should be classifiable as mainly covering research, applications, or systems, using the following guidelines for each: Research papers should describe results that contribute to advances in state-of-the-art software, hardware, algorithms, interaction, or human-factors. Application papers should explain how the authors built upon existing ideas and applied them to solve an interesting problem in a novel way. Each paper should include an evaluation of the success of the use of VR/AR/MR in the given application domain. System papers should indicate how the implementers integrated known techniques and technologies to produce an effective system, along with any lessons learned in the process. Each paper should include an evaluation of the system, including benchmarking that was performed (e.g., latency or frame-rate). To meet TVCG standards, long papers will undergo a two-stage review process (see subission deadlines below). Authors of long papers that are determined to be acceptable with minor revisions during a first review cycle will be invited to submit a revised version for a second review cycle. Only long papers that are accepted in this second review cycle will appear in the journal issue and be presented at the conference. Short papers can cover preliminary studies, prototype applications, or initial implementations. Short papers will be published separately in the standard conference proceedings. The primary difference between short and long papers is in the size of their contributions and NOT in the importance/impact of their contributions. To assure this, short and long papers will be treated as separate tracks and will be accepted or rejected according to the merit of their contributions. Rejected long papers will NOT be considered for acceptance as short papers, unless the reviewers unanimously feel this is the right decision, and rewriting is determined to be doable in the time available. Consequently, authors should carefully consider the category for each submitted paper. Note that an abstract must be uploaded prior to the paper. This facilitates assigning reviewers, as the review process is on a tight schedule. All paper submissions must be in English. Long papers must not exceed ten (10) pages in length, with the caveat that the standard is eight (8) pages. If the reviewers find a paper overly long for the size of its contribution, they may ask for it to be shortened it if it is accepted. Short papers must not exceed six (6) pages in length. In this workshop, we would like to push the boundary of visual text analytics toward heterogeneous textual data (text associated with other data types) and ubiquitous text analytics. First, we would like to use the workshop to collect various use cases about heterogeneous data and ubiquitous text analytics. From the use cases, we hope to better understand the requirements of heterogeneous textual data analysis from a task-driven perspective. Although there is some work on visual analysis of heterogeneous textual data, there is not a clear understanding of the typical tasks that people would like to achieve in analyzing heterogeneous textual data. Moreover, how will different tasks influence the design and development of both text analytics and visualization technologies? We thus would like to leverage the power of the crowd at the workshop to examine a number of use cases and draft a taxonomy that characterizes the design dimensions of the space and can also be used to guide the future design and development. Announcing a Call for Submissions for a workshop on Public Health's Wicked Problems: Can InfoVis Save Lives? In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2013 October 13-18, 2013 Atlanta, GA, USA http://www.cdc.gov/oid/public-health-workshop-1013.html --Introduction-- Public health is charged with assessing current and emerging health threats and issues, developing effective population-based policies and interventions to address these problems, and monitoring delivery and outcomes of public health actions. Many public health problems, such as the obesity epidemic, HIV/STI transmission, and environmental hazards are called “wicked” due to their complexity and multi-layered causal factors at individual, group, and social levels. Such problems must be tackled with a mix of interventions that can include changes in health care delivery systems, community and neighborhood planning, social and educational institutions, and social and individual behavior change programs. Other public health actions require rapid response and public engagement using the best data possible as it emerges in real-time, such as emerging infectious diseases, outbreaks, and emergency operations to protect public safety. To make decisions about when and where to deploy resources that produce the greatest net benefits in complex or rapidly evolving situations, public health practitioners need new tools to integrate multiple sources of data from formal disease surveillance systems, secondary sources of geographic and demographic data, and new data streams such as real-time social media content. The field of information visualization, in which datasets are explored, analyzed, and presented through a range of graphical means, could offer entirely new ways of representing, seeing, and solving population-based health problems. --Call for Participation-- The goal of the workshop is to bring together world-class public health and information visualization experts and curious learners to discuss how the fields can come together to generate new tools for emerging and longstanding public health problems. All registered attendees of IEEE VIS are encouraged to attend the workshop, with a special invitation to public health professionals who are interested in data visualization techniques to attend the conference in Atlanta.
