It seeks to define commonalities between analytical methods that utilize interactive visualization to cope with challenges posed by data, platform, and application. These include: -Processing massive data from data archives and real-time data streams. -Need for predictive and real-time analytics and operations management, -Mobile device limitations: battery, processing capacity, screens and interactivity. -Need to coordinate across multiple roles and tasks within and across organizations. -Interoperability of mobile, desktop, tabletop, wall, and virtual environments Innovations in computers, graphical displays and sensors give us the capability to generate, process, and visualize data from real-time data streams and massive data archives. Advanced data analysis approaches generate new algorithms, applications, and communication protocols optimized for platforms that include supercomputers and low-wattage mobile computers. Innovations in computer graphics and human-information interaction provide the basis for novel interactive visualization systems that can support the innate human ability to characterize, analyze, and manipulate information in complex interactive visual and multimodal environments across a multitude of devices, from mobile phones to supercomputers. Taken in isolation, both algorithmic "data sciences" approaches and human-centered "visual analytics" human-computer interface methods hold great promise for operationalizing massive datasets and streaming data in support of a broad range of human activities. Applications in basic scientific research, business analytics, health sciences, environmental science and engineering R&D explore the implications of these methods for advancement of knowledge and strategic planning. Applications in coordination, command and control of complex human activities such as disaster relief, law enforcement, and anti-terrorism add the constraints of real-time performance and distribution of planning to the challenges faced. We invite mathematical, computational, cognitive, and organizational perspectives on the use of advanced data processing and interactive visualization approaches to understanding and controlling complex systems across a range of human endeavors. We also invite participation from researchers who are looking at scaling issues and multi-scale issues, whether these scales refer to the time of decision making, the form-factor and operational constraints of mobile devices, the number of decision makers or the more traditional notion of multi-scale simulation and real-world scales of data. We are particularly interested in papers that report on an effective synthesis of algorithms and visualization with an impact on decision-making and/or coordination of operations, as evidenced by either realist simulations or adoption in a concrete mission. This minitrack seeks to bring together researchers and problem owners working in these areas to present research methods and findings and to discuss their approaches and ideas to advance the state-of-the-art for this class of complex "wicked" problems. This trend is associated with the increasing availability of a wide spectrum of high-level data integration tools - such as mash-up platforms - that enabled users to develop novel applications and business scenarios. As the richness and value of data increases, applications must provide users with visualizations and interaction paradigms that leverage properties such as the underlying data relationships, source type, provenance, and quality. This is a major change of paradigm with respect to traditional document integration and navigation, as the interaction with data object repositories proved to be a challenging task for application developers. To address these issues, cross fertilization between different disciplines is mandatory: existing approaches for Web service engineering, integration and composition should be merged with data visualization and interaction methodologies with the purpose of identifying the best interaction and visualization paradigms for data-centric Web Services. Hello Please excuse this bit of self-promotion but I just wanted to flag a new book I've co-edited that is about to be published by Wiley. I thought the The Map Reader might be of relevance to some of the people on this list. The volume excerpts over 50 key pieces of scholarly writing on cartographic representation and mapping practice from the last few decades, along with five new interpretative essays. It has been co-edited with Rob Kitchin and Chris Perkins. This workshop will focus on interactive information visualization as a collection of tools and techniques which promise to increase our ability to understand, curate, manage, and analyze large scale DLs, and to support research and discovery by end users of DLs. This includes the discovery of knowledge about (new and existing) facts, concepts, relationships, behaviours, and processes. Aims and Scope *** The rapidly expanding field of biology creates enormous challenges for computational visualization techniques that enable researchers to gain insight from their large and highly complex data sets. The goal of the first IEEE Symposium on Biological Data Visualization (BioVis 2011) is to create the premier international and interdisciplinary event for all aspects of visualization in biology. This symposium will bring together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. As the first annual BioVis Symposium, this event seeks to emphasize inclusion and interaction between these communities as its primary impact. The symposium will serve as a platform for researchers from these fields to increase the impact of visualization approaches in biology. The breadth and diversity of biological research areas will enable researchers from all parts of the visualization community to contribute to this effort, and the symposium will provide an excellent opportunity to initiate interdisciplinary collaborations. Finally, it will provide an outlet and training ground for young and freshly minted visualization researchers with a keen interest in problems of biology and provide a venue for researchers in biology and bioinformatics to share pressing visualization challenges and potential solutions in their fields. *** 2. Topics *** We are looking for contributions on all aspects of visualization in biology. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: - Genome and sequence data, including genomic variation data - Multivariate omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) - Phylogenetic data - Ecological and taxonomic data - Biological networks and pathways - Biological ontologies - Molecular structures (protein structures, RNA structures, etc.) - Subcellular, cellular, tissue- and organ-level structures - Visualization of image data, such as microscopic or radiological data - Integration of image and omics data for systems biology - Modeling, simulation and visualization of biological systems - Visualization in neurobiology and developmental biology - Systems and software frameworks for biological visualization - Integration of visualization in biological workflows or collaborative processes - Visualization and visual analytics of integrated data sets - Evaluation of biological visualization systems including interfaces, usability, laboratory experiments, and field studies - Creation and visualization of biological atlases and metadata - Processes for interdisciplinary collaboration between biology and visualization *** 3. Symposium Format *** The symposium will be a two-day single-track event with keynote and invited talks, papers sessions, panels, and abstracts presented through posters, demos, or videos. Tutorial sessions on visualization in bioinformatics/biology will be organized. *** 4. Submission Types and Criteria *** Given the goal of bringing together members of both the biology and visualization communities for discussion, the symposium solicitation is purposefully broad and open-minded to diverse types and lengths of submissions. Authors are encouraged to identify the intent of their submission. Each paper will be reviewed by the Program Committee and given appropriate time and venue at the symposium in accordance with its stated intent and length. Types of submissions include, but are not limited to: - Detailed reports of original research - Experience reports, highlighting lessons learned from the deployment of relevant previously published work - Descriptions of work in progress and preliminary results - Demonstrations of new or recent systems, both open source and proprietary - Descriptions of analysis challenges where current tools fall short for specific datasets and goals, to inform the visualization community in producing better future solutions Authors should indicate the intended publication type of their submissions, as one of two categories: *Papers*: Up to 8 page papers describing high-quality research that is not necessarily fully completed but offers new insight. (Additional figures, etc. can be included as supplemental materials.) Selected papers will have an opportunity for an extended and refined invited follow-up submission (see Section 9). Authors will have an oral presentation in a session with an emphasis on questions and discussion with the audience. *Abstracts*: Up to 2 page abstracts that either describe early-stage research or highlight previously published work that has been extended since the original publication. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters, interactive demos or videos at the symposium and all presenters will have the opportunity to give a brief overview of their work in a plenary "fast-forward session". Additionally, presenters of selected abstracts will be given the opportunity for longer oral presentation at the symposium. *** 5. General Expectations (Ethics Guidelines) *** At least one author of an accepted submission must attend the symposium to present the work. When submitting your paper you will be asked to provide a complete list of authors even when submitting an anonymized version of the manuscript. This is required to avoid potential conflicts of interest when assigning reviewers. In the event that the authorship changes after submission, one of the initially specified authors must attend the symposium. Submissions will be treated as confidential communications during the review process, so submission does not constitute public disclosure of any ideas therein. Submissions should contain no information or materials that will be proprietary or confidential at the time of publication (at the symposium), and should cite no publications that are proprietary or confidential at the time of publication. Our symposium will adhere to the VGTC ethics guidelines for reviewers that can be found at http://vgtc.org/wpmu/techcom/conferences/ethics-guidelines/ . *** 6. Review Process *** The Program Committee will involve reviewers from both the visualization and bioinformatics communities. Papers will be reviewed for novelty and contribution. The review process will be optionally double-blind for those who want to submit their work anonymously. When submitting for double-blind reviewing you are asked NOT to include any identifying information in the submission. Alternatively, the review process will be single- blind, i.e., the reviewers know the identity of the authors, but the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers. The nature and the abundance of such structured data shifts the nature of user interactions, where models based on navigation of documents are replaced by paradigms that leverage the exploration of object repositories; in such a context, providing a satisfactory user experience has proven to be a challenging task for application developers. In addition, as the richness and value of data also increases, Web applications must provide users with visualizations and interaction paradigms that leverage properties such as the underlying data relationships, source type, provenance, and quality. Contextually, the availability of a wide spectrum of high-level data integration tools - such as mash-up platforms ‚Äì has offered to developers (and to end users) several means for the integration of such data, enabling novel applications and business scenario. The usage of the Web as a common publication, mediation, aggregation, and consumption platform decreased the existing gap between Web and enterprise applications, which often leverage common data integration methodologies and tools. As a consequence, a deeper understanding of data integration, visualization and user interaction issues is becoming more and more compelling in applications design and development. In order to tackle the new challenges provided by a Web of Data, data integration, visualization and user interaction methodologies and tools need to be revised to effectively manage the design and the interaction application with information. The objective of this special issue is to review recent works that address state-of-the-art of analysis and design techniques on how to create effective Web applications where the integration, visualization and interaction with data is a main concern, as well as the application of assessed methods and techniques to existing design and development environments. The purpose of the study is to measure what non-trivial and unexpected insights are found from interacting with a specific data representation. The study is part of a collaborative research project between K.U. Leuven, Vienna University of Technology, and the University of Sydney. This is the sixth event in a series of special tracks on visualization topics organized in conjunction with the annual I-Know conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies. Former events included the KIV (Knowledge and Information Visualisation) special tracks since I-Know 2003 and the KVD (Knowledge Visualisation and Discovery) special tracks since I-Know 2006. The focus of TAVA 2011 on Visual Analytics reflects the increasing scientific importance and the growing practical relevance of this exciting new discipline. This one-day special track is a programme item of I-Know 2011, the 11th International Conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies which takes place in Graz, Austria from September 7th to September 9th 2011. The special track provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of Visual Analytics. I-Know 2011 brings together international researchers and practitioners from the fields of knowledge management and knowledge technologies. The conference will cover relevant aspects from the fields of Knowledge Management, Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Services, Social Media, Enterprise 2.0 and the Social Web. I-Know 2011 will be held concurrently with I-Semantics 2011, the International Conference on Semantic Systems. Objectives Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by interactive visual techniques. It integrates techniques from visualization and computer graphics, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning and cognitive and perceptual sciences. Real-world applications in areas like business intelligence, media analysis or protection of intellectual property rights require efficient access and analysis of massive, heterogeneous, dynamic knowledge repositories which frequently contain ambiguous or conflicting evidence. Visual Analytics advocates a promising combination of automatic analysis and human pattern recognition abilities and domain knowledge to address this challenge. TAVA 2011 addresses theoretical advances and practical applications of Visual Analytics. In the best tradition of the i-KNOW conference series, the objective of the special track is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field. TAVA 2011 will provide a forum for the promotion of research and developments in Visual Analytics with particular attention towards the application of Visual Analytics in Knowledge Technologies and Knowledge Management. We encourage submission of original research papers reporting on theoretical advances, evaluation results or applications of Visual Analytics in relevant real-world scenarios. Submissions will be reviewed by a board of international experts with accepted papers to be published in the I-Know conference proceedings. The special track will be held in English. The special track program will be opened by a keynote given by Prof. Jack van Wijk (Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands). Three paper presentation sessions will be separated by comfortably scheduled breaks allowing for fruitful discussions among participants. A closing panel headed by Dr. Jörn Kohlhammer (Fraunhofer IGD, Germany) will investigate the future role of Visual Analytics in the context of Knowledge Technologies and conclude the special track.
