This is a unique opportunity to work with actual analysts on real data. Post-Docs can be funded through either NRC or ORAU. We can also work with Scholarship for Service students. The goal of this research is to examine the issues underlying cybersecurity, devising novel theoretical constructs on which future cybersecurity advances will be based. Research focuses on developing theories, models, and understanding that will lead to more effective intrusion detection techniques (e.g., how data can be effectively visualized for decision makers and how can existing information be acquired and fused with the effect of engendering greater understanding of events. Some specific areas of research being considered include but are not limited to: (1) exploring models for the representation of cybersecurity (e.g., game theory); (2) exploring ensemble techniques for improved detection with consideration of Byzantine General type attacks; (3) considering forensics and anti-forensics in the context of cybersecurity, both as a representational model as well as an analysis paradigm; (4) considering behavior as a fundamental indicator in detection and analysis; (5) acquiring improved network understanding with the goal of improving detection; and (6) developing novel detectors based on improved understanding to achieve low FP and FN. This is an opportunity to have a significant impact on future cybersecurity research, work with actual analysts in the network analysis domain, validate theories with ARL scientists, and test techniques on real-world data. If you would like some simple data files that describe every InfoVis and VAST Conference paper in the history of those conferences, we have created such files and have made them now available for download. The files contain a simple xml-ish format describing each paper, its title and abstract, authors, conference, year, keywords, etc. We believe that the format will be easy to read and understand. Also available on the same site is a file containing information about CHI conference papers since 1999. You can download the files from the webpage http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii/jigsaw/datafiles.html. We hope that these files will be useful to researchers in the community exploring new methods of visualizing and understanding collections of documents. Research Scientist in Visual Analytics open position

FODAVA: Seeking a Research Scientist The FODAVA (Foundations of Data Analysis and Visual Analytics) Center at Georgia Tech is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team. Enormous amounts of data are being generated every day in health care, computational biology, homeland security, commerce, and many other areas. Analyzing these massive and complex data sets is essential to achieve new discoveries, but is extremely difficult. An emerging research field known as data and visual analytics is concerned with synthesizing information and deriving insight from massive, dynamic, ambiguous and possibly conflicting digital data for increased understanding and effective decision making. The FODAVA research initiative is dedicated to both defining the foundations of the data and visual analytics fields and advancing the state-of-the-art. Established in 2008, the FODAVA initiative is a collaborative effort funded jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). For further information about the Center, please see http://fodava.gatech.edu/. We are seeking a Research Scientist (RS) to join our group and assist with ongoing research. The position will involve work on two main projects. First, the RS will contribute to the Jigsaw project (http://www.gvu.gatech.edu/ii/jigsaw) Specifically, the RS will lead an effort into modifying the architecture of the system and creating a new API that will allow other software systems to better interact with it. Second, the RS will help build a visual analytics system for document discovery based on the fundamental data analytic theory and methods we have developed. The system will allow users to find and become aware of documents of interest among a sea of incoming documents such as research papers obtained with a crawler from across the internet. In addition to these two projects, there will be opportunities for the RS to collaborate on other ongoing research as well as to initiate new projects. Georgia Tech faculty are dedicated to working with the successful applicant in mentoring and career growth. The ideal candidate should have at least an MS in a related discipline or a BS with equivalent experience. Prior work in areas such as visual analytics, data analysis, data mining, machine learning, and/or HCI will be extremely useful. Candidates also should have strong software engineering and programming skills (knowledge of Java and Swing is a must) and good verbal, writing, and communication skills. This is a 2-year position, beginning Fall 2011. The nature and the abundance of such structured data shifts the nature of user interactions, where models based on navigation of documents are replaced by paradigms that leverage the exploration of object repositories; in such a context, providing a satisfactory user experience has proven to be a challenging task for application developers. In addition, as the richness and value of data also increases, Web applications must provide users with visualizations and interaction paradigms that leverage properties such as the underlying data relationships, source type, provenance, and quality. Contextually, the availability of a wide spectrum of high-level data integration tools - such as mash-up platforms ‚Äì has offered to developers (and to end users) several means for the integration of such data, enabling novel applications and business scenario. The usage of the Web as a common publication, mediation, aggregation, and consumption platform decreased the existing gap between Web and enterprise applications, which often leverage common data integration methodologies and tools. As a consequence, a deeper understanding of data integration, visualization and user interaction issues is becoming more and more compelling in applications design and development. In order to tackle the new challenges provided by a Web of Data, data integration, visualization and user interaction methodologies and tools need to be revised to effectively manage the design and the interaction application with information. The objective of this special issue is to review recent works that address state-of-the-art of analysis and design techniques on how to create effective Web applications where the integration, visualization and interaction with data is a main concern, as well as the application of assessed methods and techniques to existing design and development environments. We are looking for Post-Docs to join the Army Research Laboratory (Adelphi, MD) in the area of Cyber-Security. This is a unique opportunity to work with actual analysts on real data. Post-Docs can be funded through either NRC or ORAU. We can also work with Scholarship for Service students. The main limitation is that we can only take US citizens. Please feel free to contact me with any questions (Robert.Erbacher at gmail.com) The main focus of the research is described below; though we are looking to expand our capabilities: The goal of this research is to examine the issues underlying cyber security, devising novel theoretical constructs on which future cyber security advances will be based. Research focuses on developing theories, models, and understanding that will lead to more effective intrusion detection techniques (e.g., how data can be effectively visualized for decision makers and how existing information can be acquired and fused with the effect of engendering greater understanding of events. Some specific areas of research being considered include but are not limited to: (1) exploring models for the representation of cyber security (e.g., game theory); (2) exploring ensemble techniques for improved detection with consideration of Byzantine General type attacks; (3) considering forensics and anti-forensics in the context of cyber security, both as a representational model as well as an analysis paradigm; (4) considering behavior as a fundamental indicator in detection and analysis; (5) acquiring improved network understanding with the goal of improving detection; and (6) developing novel detectors based on improved understanding to achieve low FP and FN. This is an opportunity to have a significant impact on future cyber security research, work with actual analysts in the network analysis domain, validate theories with ARL scientists, and test techniques on real-world data. IEEE VisWeek 2011 Workshop on Interactive Visual Text Analytics for Decision Making Dates: October 23-28, 2011 Location: Providence, RI Important Dates: Papers Due: Sep 2, 2011 Notification of Papers: Sep 16, 2011 Final Papers Due: Sep 30, 2011 Madness Participation Registration: Oct 10, 2011 Analyzing text documents has become increasingly an important part of decision making in large corporations, small businesses, and households. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and industry practitioners interested in text visualization, text analytics, and visual analytics, to define the emerging fields of visual text analytics, and to discuss ideas, techniques, and applications to support decision making in different domains. Topics: We invite paper submissions that address any topic related to visual text analytics and application domains especially how interactive visual text analytics can facilitate decision making. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: · Visual and interaction design for text analytics · Visual representation, structure, metaphors for text · Perception and cognition in text visualizations · Systems, languages, and architectures for text analytics · Methodologies, processes for visual text analysis · Collaborative analysis of text corpora · Real-time visualization of streaming text data · Visual text analytics in social media · Industry-specific applications of visual text analytics (e.g. Retail, Healthcare, Government, etc.) · Studies of analytic work on document collections · Evaluation of visualization techniques; Metrics and bench-marks · Datasets and tasks for visual text analytics to facilitate decision making · Representations of uncertainty in text analytics Submission: We are looking for research and industry papers related to visual text analytics with a focus on facilitating human decision making. All other accepted papers will be presented as posters during the poster session.
