FODAVA: Seeking a Research Scientist/Postdoctoral Researcher The FODAVA (Foundations of Data Analysis and Visual Analytics) Center at Georgia Tech is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team. For candidates holding a doctoral degree, this position could become a postdoctoral researcher. Enormous amounts of data are being generated every day in health care, computational biology, homeland security, commerce, and many other areas. Analyzing these massive and complex data sets is essential to achieve new discoveries, but is extremely difficult. An emerging research field known as data and visual analytics is concerned with synthesizing information and deriving insight from massive, dynamic, ambiguous and possibly conflicting digital data for increased understanding and effective decision making. The FODAVA research initiative is dedicated to both defining the foundations of the data and visual analytics fields and advancing the state-of-the-art. Established in 2008, the FODAVA initiative is a collaborative effort funded jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). For further information about the Center, please seehttp://fodava.gatech.edu/. We are seeking a Research Scientist (RS) to join our group and assist with ongoing research. The position will involve work on two main projects. First, the RS will contribute to the Jigsaw project (http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii/jigsaw) for visual analytics and sensemaking on document collections. Second, the RS will assist in the design and development of a visual analytics system for document discovery based on the fundamental data analytic theory and methods we have developed. In addition to these two projects, there will be opportunities for the RS to collaborate on other ongoing research as well as to initiate new projects. Georgia Tech faculty are dedicated to working with the successful applicant in mentoring and career growth. The ideal candidate should have at least an MS in a related discipline or a BS with equivalent experience. We also welcome candidates with a recently earned PhD who are seeking a postdoctoral research position. Prior work in areas such as visual analytics, data analysis, data mining, machine learning, and/or HCI will be extremely useful. Candidates also should have strong software engineering and programming skills (knowledge of Java and Swing is a must) and good verbal, writing, and communication skills. This is a one year position, beginning immediately, with a potential renewal of a second year. Call for Papers Workshop on Aesthetic Data Visualization: Tools & Challenges for Interaction Designers at NordiCHI 2012 October 14th, 2012, Copenhagen, Denmark http://datavis.hkjung.com/ Data visualization has been a big interest among interaction designers thanks to the advances of visualization authoring tools. With the tools including programming languages, visualization generation websites, and open source libraries, interaction designers can easily create data visualization harnessing their prototyping skills and aesthetic sensibility. However, there still exist some technical and methodological challenges for interaction designers in jumping into the scene. At the workshop, we will discuss new roles of designers in this interdisciplinary field, and the ways of using and enhancing visualization tools to support designers. We encourage experts in the intersection of data visualization and interaction design to share their experiences in designing interactive visualizations in both industry and academic contexts. 2nd call: PhD position in machine learning, data analysis and visualization Aalto University School of Science invites applications for a doctoral student / research assistant position for a fixed term (4 years: initial contract for 1 year, extension to the remaining 3 years decided at the end of the year). Start date: 1 September 2012 (negotiable) Application deadline: 29 June 2012 Visualization and exploratory analysis are crucial in analysis of new phenomena where strong hypotheses are not yet available. You will develop advanced machine learning methods for exploratory analysis, including methods for nonlinear dimensionality reduction, visualization, and exploratory data analysis with multiple data sources. The methods will involve novel probabilistic models for the structure and dependencies between multiple data sets. The methods will be used in bioinformatics, neuroinformatics, analysis of structured data like graphs, proactive information retrieval, and other domains. We have developed novel frameworks for visualization from an information retrieval perspective, and for multitask learning in asymmetric scenarios; your work will extend these research lines. Research Site: The position is at the Department of Information and Computer Science, Aalto University School of Science. The department hosts three national Centres of Excellence: the Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research (COIN) and parts of the Centres of Excellence in Algorithmic Data Analysis Research and Molecular Systems Immunology and Physiology Research. The department also contributes to the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the Helsinki node of the EIT ICT Labs. The department was ranked among the top two departments of Aalto University in the Research Assessment Exercise 2009. The position is located in the Statistical Machine Learning and Bioinformatics research group at the Department. The group is part of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT in Aalto University. The group is a member of the new Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research (COIN), and is also a member in the EU PASCAL2 network of excellence. The work will be supervised by academy research fellow Jaakko Peltonen. The work involves collaboration with Finnish researchers including members of the Statistical Machine Learning and Bioinformatics research group at Aalto University led by Prof. Samuel Kaski, and international researchers from the UK, Belgium, and the USA. See http://www.vacommunity.org/vastchallenge2012 This year's VAST Challenge focuses on visual analytics applications for both large scale situation analysis and cyber security. There are two mini-challenges to test your visual analytics applications and your analytical skills. In mini-challenge 1, (the imaginary) BankWorld's largest financial institution, the (fictitious) Bank of Money needs your best situation awareness visualizations to understand the health of its global corporate network. How do you visualize status data for a network containing nearly a million computers in a way that you can perceive network health and identify problems? In mini-challenge 2, unusual events are occurring in one of the Bank of Money's regional offices. Some of them may very well wreak havoc across the institution if they turn out to be malicious. What are these unusual events? And if you were in charge of computer security, what actions should be taken to safeguard the network and quite possibly save the Bank of Money from disaster? (Participants from last year's VAST challenge may find their firewall and IDS log analysis tools useful for this challenge as well.) SCOPE Visual languages mediate human and computer interaction. For some visual languages this mediation is straightforward; using a mouse to access a drop-down menu is well-known to computer users. For others, this mediation can be enriched via sketch and gesture recognition. This is made possible by advances in commodity hardware. More formal visual languages allow experts to accurately specify complex systems, such as software architecture or chemical molecules. A visual language can also encompass complex human-computer interaction such as navigating a set of semantically linked videos. Indeed, precision of semantics underlies visual languages and computation. Aspects of visual computing are multi-faceted in goals that are to be achieved during information or language design. The following represents a short list of qualities that are of importance to the study within visual computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure, emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration, and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and science play key roles where certain practitioners focus on design and engineering of visual interactions whereas others analyze and study these interactions (i.e., science). The International Workshop on Visual Languages and Computing will explore these issues, and will be held in conjunction with the 2012 International Conference of Distributed Multimedia Systems (http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms12.html) For this year's special theme we requested high-quality submissions on visual languages that increase the efficacy of various tasks, or on the effectiveness of visual languages themselves. Hardware prices are falling, core sensing technology is improving, software toolkits are maturing, and interaction paradigms are slowly beginning to solidify. As a result, interactive tabletops and surfaces are increasingly making their way beyond laboratories and appearing in a wide variety of private and public spaces including museums, offices, schools, airports, hotels, medical centers, and homes. Such surfaces employ a variety of technologies (capacitive sensing, computer vision, motion sensors, etc.) and appear in varied form-factors (large walls and tabletops, tablets and slates, flexible materials, on-demand projection, etc.). The ACM conference on Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces brings together researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds and interest areas. The intimate size of this single-track symposium provides an ideal venue for leading researchers, practitioners, and students to exchange research results and experiences. We encourage submissions on (but not limited to) the following topic areas as they relate to interactive tabletops and surfaces: Systems for, experiences with, and/or evaluations of surfaces in specific application areas (education, science, business, entertainment, health, accessibility, homes, etc.) Gesture-based interfaces Multi-modal interfaces Tangible interfaces Novel interaction techniques Data handling/exchange Information visualization/data presentation Software engineering methods Computer supported collaborative work Co-located, distributed, or mixed-presence collaboration Middleware and network support Virtual reality and augmented reality Social protocols Hardware, including sensing and input technologies with novel capabilities Human-centered design and methodologies Interaction in context Evaluations and user studies *CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: PAPERS AND NOTES* We invite paper submissions of two kinds: Papers (10 pages) and Notes (4 pages). Papers must present original, innovative, and forward-looking research, possibly in one or more of the themes given above. Notes must also report novel and complete research, but with a more focused and succinct contribution than papers. Submissions must be submitted as a single PDF file in the ACM format through the submission system. When appropriate, authors are also encouraged to submit a supplementary video file (not to exceed 3 minutes in length and 30 MB in size). *Important Dates* June 25, 5:00 p.m. PDT: Deadline for initial submissions August 1: First-round notifications (Revise or Reject) August 24, 5:00 p.m. PDT: Deadline for revised submissions September 12: Final notifications (Accept or Reject) September 22: Deadline for camera-ready submissions New Review Process We are excited to introduce a new review process for ITS 2012. They will help you prepare your submissions to the ITS audience through one-on-one advising. However, please note that we cannot guarantee that your submission will be accepted at ITS in any case.
