Native Welsh speakers, for example, lose their ability to differentiate between green and blue as they acquire the language (4-month old babies can visually differentiate, adults cannot). Colorblindness affects around 8% of men and 0.4% of women. Gender modulates which designs we perceive as appealing and trustworthy. North Americans are relatively better at ignoring the context surrounding a focal object, whereas East Asians perceive such contextual information first. These differences affect our perception of interface designs and other visualizations, yet two substantial questions remain: (1) How can we provide visual designs that are equally usable by everyone? (2) How can we create personalized designs that cater to an individual's perceptual abilities and preferences? GOALS This workshop is aimed at defining common ground between the different strands of visual perception research in order to promote synergy and a shared understanding of how people perceive today's designs, and how their perception might differ. To accomplish this, we will begin the process of combining the broad range of visual perception knowledge to create a holistic approach to understanding users' visual perception. The resulting combined pool of knowledge will be used to provide design guidelines for generating interfaces better suited to the individual visual perception abilities of the users. SUBMISSIONS Some of the areas that workshop participants may have experience with include the following: Factors that influence the visual perception of designs: - Visual impairments and its effect on design - Situational impairments (e.g., lighting conditions) - Influences of cultural exposure on perception - Elderly users and the effect of age on perception Effects of these factors on HCI: - Aesthetic preferences as a decisive factor for user engagement - Visual cues that lead to more trust - Usability issues arising because of visual perception difficulties Adapting to perception abilities and visual preferences: - Measuring and modeling perception abilities - Automatic adaptation of designs to perception abilities and/or visual preferences We invite technical contributions and position papers from anyone interested in how people differ in their perception of designs. Technical contributions should focus on the influence of one or more factors of visual perception, such as age, culture, gender, impairments, or other influences that change how humans perceive design. Position papers should focus on a discussion of possible interactions between different factors, and how user interfaces can cater for users' holistic visual perception. We also invite designers to show examples of their work and discuss where knowledge and improvement is needed. Blended Interaction combines the virtues of physical and digital artifacts, so that desired properties of each are preserved while integrating computing power in a considered manner. Examples of Blended Interaction range from digital pen & paper and pen & multi-touch interaction to tangible displays in rooms of mixed or augmented reality. The ACM CHI 2013 Workshop on "Blended Interaction: Envisioning Future Collaborative Interactive Spaces" is the first international workshop that will bring together leading experts in cognitive theories and post-WIMP designs and technologies to create a unified vision and theory of Blended Interaction in a multidisciplinary approach. WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS We invite submissions about the (1.) technology, (2.) vision, and (3.) theory of Blended Interaction and will carefully select participants to ensure an equal distribution of expertise from these three fields. The successful candidate will conduct interdisciplinary research in biological data visualization and work closely with Dr. Carsten Görg and other faculty and researchers in the Computational Bioscience Program. A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related discipline, and being a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident are minimal requirements. The ideal candidate would also have a background in information visualization or visual analytics, and experience in visualizing and analyzing structured data, such as networks, as well as unstructured data, such as textual documents. Programming skills in Java, web-based graphics development, and domain knowledge in biology are beneficial. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her research, publication, and presentation skills under mentorship from Dr. Görg. Start date: Immediately. The initial appointment will be for a one-year period, with the possibility of a yearly extension to up to three years based upon performance. For some visual languages this mediation is straightforward; using a mouse to access a drop-down menu is well-known to computer users. For others, this mediation can be enriched via sketch and gesture recognition. This is made possible by advances in commodity hardware. More formal visual languages allow experts to accurately specify complex systems, such as software architecture or chemical molecules. A visual language can also encompass complex human-computer interaction such as navigating a set of semantically linked videos. Indeed, precision of semantics underlies visual languages and computation. Aspects of visual computing are multi-faceted in goals that are to be achieved during information or language design. The following represents a short list of qualities that are of importance to the study within visual computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure, emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration, and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and science play key roles where certain practitioners focus on design and engineering of visual interactions whereas others analyze and study these interactions (i.e., science). The main theme of the 19th International Conference on Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS'2013) is multimedia inspired computing. Details are specified below: Position: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Graphic Design with a Data Visualization focus, Twin Cities Campus. Nine-month, 100 percent time, academic year appointment. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop a research component in data visualization and will teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in graphic design with a focus on the communication of data via digital modeling using data visualization software and information design methods. Research agenda will include the perceptual and sociological aspects of data visualization and/or development of interactive systems for exploring data. The candidate will develop interdisciplinary connections with other programs of the College of Design, collaborate with faculty across the university, and will establish ties to local, national and international enterprises (business, civic and/or cultural) to leverage their research and teaching activities. The candidate will disseminate work in peer-reviewed venues and will pursue external funding to support their research agenda. The candidate will teach existing courses in the graphic design and/or foundations curriculum. Required Qualifications: Terminal degree earned by the start date with at least one degree in graphic design or a closely related field. Focus in data visualization. Professional and teaching experiences in the field. Expertise in computer programs for graphic and data visualization. Ability to teach courses in one or more of the areas in the graphic design curriculum such as foundations and/or graphic design studio courses. Ability to develop an active research or creative scholarship program and the ability to procure grants to support the program. Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and research. Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students. Ability to support interdisciplinary initiatives in teaching and research with related fields in the College of Design (architecture, apparel design, graphic design, housing studies, interior design, product design, retail merchandising or landscape architecture). Ability to forge productive connections with business, related professions, cultural institutions and communities beyond the University. Demonstrated or potential leadership skills. Preferred Qualifications: In addition to required qualifications: A record of creative activity or scholarly research in areas related to data visualization. A record of innovative teaching via effective learning environments that attend to students’ diverse cultural, educational and learning styles. Experience in program and curricular development in undergraduate or graduate education. International visibility in graphic design and data visualization or related areas. Evidence of collaboration with academic departments in multiple disciplines. Record of achievement in integrating design and business, and work that supports development of the design disciplines and society. Salary and Rank: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
