Applicants should have a Ph.D. in computer science or related field and a research background in the areas of scientific visualization, information visualization, or visual analytics, but also must have great client relationship skills, be highly empathic, and be adept at client need finding. Effort will be on a new project that focuses on innovative ways for users to interact with scientific data visualization. While the overall use of visualizations is accelerating, the growth of techniques for the evaluation of these systems has been slow. To understand these complex behaviors, evaluation efforts should be targeted at the component level, the system level, and the work environment level. The commonly used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors appear often insufficient to quantify the quality of a visualization system; thus the name of the workshop: "beyond time and errors ...". The BELIV workshop series is a bi-annual event focusing on the challenges of evaluation in visualization. While it has been focused on information visualization in the past, BELIV 2012 aims at gathering researchers in all fields of visualization to continue the exploration of novel evaluation methods, and to structure the knowledge on evaluation in visualization around a schema, where researchers can easily identify unsolved problems and research gaps. This is the fourth edition of the BELIV workshop series. Postdoctoral position for Visual Analytics at IBM Research in NY

Our research group at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center is looking for postdoctoral candidates with interest in the field of visual analytics. Our interdisciplinary research group is composed of researchers in visualization, data mining, and text analytics, while also working alongside medical scientists and bio-statisticians. More information about our group is located here: http://www.research.ibm.com/healthcare/ The Healthcare Transformation department at the IBM T J Watson Research Center is seeking a post-doctorate researcher to join a multi-disciplinary research group focusing on analytics for healthcare. The team consists of experts in visualization and data mining, as well as medical scientists. The ideal candidate should possess or be nearing completion of a doctorate in computer science, medical informatics or bio-statistics with a demonstrated interest in the use of visual analytics. In addition to being technically abreast of the literature and progress within the specific and related areas of expertise, the post-doctorate researcher is expected to generate highly novel ideas and be involved in their execution and implementation. He/she is expected to contribute significantly to the team in developing new analytics and interactive visual methods in preventive care, leveraging big data from longitudinal electronic medical records and patient controlled devices. The researcher should also have strong system design and development skills and should be able to deploy software services individually and as part of an extended team. Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team across multiple geographies are also critical qualities sought for. The post-doctorate researcher is also expected to disseminate, externally and internally, the results of such activities through publications, patent disclosures, seminar participation, internal documentation, and represent IBM at professional meetings, in professional societies, and universities. Call for Participation The 2nd Workshop on Interactive Visual Text Analytics: Task-Driven Analysis of Social Media Content a workshop at IEEE VisWeek '12 October 14, 2012 http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/shliu/tasmc WORKSHOP GOAL Hundreds of millions of people express themselves daily on social media, such as Twitter. They share their personal status updates such as "just got married", publicize location-based information such as where they were and are planning to go, and voice their sentiment about products and services. Since the buzz of the crowd on social media provides a great deal of information that was not available before, businesses and organizations have started leveraging social media to profile customers, derive brand perception, gauge citizen sentiments, and predict the stock market. For example, retailers track and examine customer social media posts to understand customer sentiments toward their products and services. Healthcare providers analyze patient posts in online forums to better understand patients' needs and progresses. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media, text visualization, text analytics, and visual analytics, to define the emerging field of visual text analysis of social media. We are particularly interested in discussing tasks, techniques, and applications in different domains. In other words, we would like to establish a better understanding what major tasks that people aim to accomplish in using visual text analysis of social media and how different tasks call for different text analytics and/or interactive visualization techniques. As a result, we hope to derive a task taxonomy that describes the intended user tasks, and corresponding text analytics and visualization technologies in the context of analyzing social media text. This taxonomy can then be used to guide the use and development of text analytics and visualization techniques. PAPER SUBMISSION We invite 2-4 page position paper submissions that address topics related to visual text analysis of social media, with a requirement that every submission must clearly state the specific tasks to be achieved.
