See http://www.vacommunity.org/vastchallenge2012 This year's VAST Challenge focuses on visual analytics applications for both large scale situation analysis and cyber security. There are two mini-challenges to test your visual analytics applications and your analytical skills. In mini-challenge 1, (the imaginary) BankWorld's largest financial institution, the (fictitious) Bank of Money needs your best situation awareness visualizations to understand the health of its global corporate network. How do you visualize status data for a network containing nearly a million computers in a way that you can perceive network health and identify problems? In mini-challenge 2, unusual events are occurring in one of the Bank of Money's regional offices. Some of them may very well wreak havoc across the institution if they turn out to be malicious. What are these unusual events? And if you were in charge of computer security, what actions should be taken to safeguard the network and quite possibly save the Bank of Money from disaster? (Participants from last year's VAST challenge may find their firewall and IDS log analysis tools useful for this challenge as well.) Symposium Aims and Scope *** The goal of the Symposium on Biological Data Visualization (BioVis) is to establish a premier international and interdisciplinary event for all aspects of visualization in biology. This Symposium aims at bringing together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. Poster Criteria *** Given the goal of bringing together members of both the biology and visualization communities for discussion, the symposium solicitation is purposefully broad and open-minded to diverse types of submissions. The posters are meant to support an exchange of ideas and can be based on work-in-progress. Although submissions may present relevant research previously published for a different community (e.g. a biology or bioinformatics conference or journal), we will not accept material submitted simultaneously to another VisWeek 2012 venue. Each extended abstract will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Types of submissions include, but are not limited to: - Descriptions of work-in-progress and preliminary results - Demonstrations of new or recent systems, both open source and proprietary - Descriptions of analysis challenges where current tools fall short for specific datasets and goals to inform the visualization community in producing better future solutions - Ideas for future research directions - Experience reports, highlighting lessons learned from the deployment of relevant previously published work - Reports of original research Poster submissions consist of an extended abstract (up to 2 pages), which may include figures. Do NOT submit the actual large format poster document. Accepted submissions will be presented as posters at the Symposium and we encourage authors to include a demo or video into their presentation. All presenters will have the opportunity to give a brief overview of their work in a plenary "fast-forward session". Presenters of selected posters will be given the opportunity for longer oral presentation at the Symposium. SCOPE Visual languages mediate human and computer interaction. For some visual languages this mediation is straightforward; using a mouse to access a drop-down menu is well-known to computer users. For others, this mediation can be enriched via sketch and gesture recognition. This is made possible by advances in commodity hardware. More formal visual languages allow experts to accurately specify complex systems, such as software architecture or chemical molecules. A visual language can also encompass complex human-computer interaction such as navigating a set of semantically linked videos. Indeed, precision of semantics underlies visual languages and computation. Aspects of visual computing are multi-faceted in goals that are to be achieved during information or language design. The following represents a short list of qualities that are of importance to the study within visual computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure, emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration, and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and science play key roles where certain practitioners focus on design and engineering of visual interactions whereas others analyze and study these interactions (i.e., science). The International Workshop on Visual Languages and Computing will explore these issues, and will be held in conjunction with the 2012 International Conference of Distributed Multimedia Systems (http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms12.html) For this year's special theme we requested high-quality submissions on visual languages that increase the efficacy of various tasks, or on the effectiveness of visual languages themselves. Hardware prices are falling, core sensing technology is improving, software toolkits are maturing, and interaction paradigms are slowly beginning to solidify. As a result, interactive tabletops and surfaces are increasingly making their way beyond laboratories and appearing in a wide variety of private and public spaces including museums, offices, schools, airports, hotels, medical centers, and homes. Such surfaces employ a variety of technologies (capacitive sensing, computer vision, motion sensors, etc.) and appear in varied form-factors (large walls and tabletops, tablets and slates, flexible materials, on-demand projection, etc.). The ACM conference on Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces brings together researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds and interest areas. This workshop aims at creating an interdisciplinary community with a focus on the interface design issues for recommender systems and promoting the collaboration opportunities between researchers and practitioners. As an interactive intelligent system, recommender systems are developed to give recommendations which match users' preferences. Since the emergence of recommender systems, a large majority of research focuses on objective accuracy criteria and less attention has been paid to how users interact with the system and the efficacy of interface designs from users' perspective. Well-designed user interfaces have the capability of enhancing user interaction experience and overall satisfaction. For example, explanation interfaces can increase user confidence in their decision choices and inspire user trust and loyalty to the used system. Nowadays, a variety of novel recommendation technologies have been developed to meet different needs (e.g., group and social recommenders). Recommender systems have also extended to new application platforms (e.g., mobile devices). In addition, heterogeneous information resources have been incorporated into recommender systems (e.g., psychological factors, social media). This brings forward new challenges in designing effective and efficient interfaces for these new recommender applications. Three submission types are accepted: • Full technical papers (8 pages), presenting technical, scientific, and/or applicative findings, contribute to the knowledge and understanding of problems of interest, and/or present methodological advancements. • Short technical papers (4 pages), presenting work in progress or of shorter, specific scope. • Short demo papers (4 pages), describing how the novel interface prototype is used to solve practically important problems. A supplemental informal description (1-2 pages) should be attached to the submission, describing what attendees will be able to see or do during your demo (e.g. screenshots), and itemize any equipment or facilities that you will bring for your system demonstration. An accompanying video is optional, but highly encouraged. Any submitted video should be at most three minutes long and 50MB in size. Each paper will be evaluated by at least three reviewers from the Program Committee. The papers will be evaluated for their originality, contribution significance, soundness, clarity, and overall quality. More specifically, DC submissions can cover a wide selection of topics related to VisWeek, including but not limited to * Visual data mining * Perception in visualization * Design aspects of visualization * High-dimensional visualization * Data management and knowledge representation * Large data visualization * Analytical reasoning and sensemaking * GPGPU methods in visualization * Usability testing and evaluation * Mathematics and statistics * Principles and foundations of visualization * Relevant application areas (climate, chemistry, hydrology, CFD, medicine, genomics/proteomics, molecular biology, etc.) The colloquium will allow students to discuss their research directions in a supportive atmosphere with a panel of distinguished leaders and with their peers. Students can expect helpful feedback and fresh perspectives on their research topics and possible career paths, and will have the opportunity to interact closely with expert researchers in their field. The colloquium will support community-building by connecting beginning and advanced researchers. **Format** The colloquium will likely consist of four sessions of student presentations including in-depth discussion with the expert panelists and the audience. A lunch is also planned that will give student participants the opportunity to interact one-on-one with panelists. NOTE: Past doctoral colloquia have partially funded student participants for their travel and conference registration. We hope to be able to fund participants for the 2012 DC as well. **Submissions** The deadline for DC submissions is June 27, 2012. Applicants to the Doctoral Colloquium should submit: * A four-page summary of their thesis research, including the problem being addressed, methodology and plan of research, and a description of the progress to date. * An email from the student's advisor recommending the student for participation in the colloquium, emailed directly to doctoral_coll(a)visweek.org. * (Optional) A draft poster in PDF format (see below). Student submissions should be emailed to doctoral_coll(a)visweek.org. Formatting guidelines and LaTeX/Word templates can be found at http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Tasks/camera.html. Student submissions will be peer-reviewed and selections will be made on the basis of their contribution to the colloquium's goals, strength of research direction, and the advisor's assessment. Accepted submissions will be printed for colloquium participants. **Poster Presentations** Accepted participants of the Doctoral Colloquium will also be allowed to present their work as a poster that will be displayed together with the regular poster program. Please consider including a draft poster with your DC submission. Participants may be asked to refine their posters and summaries based upon reviewer feedback. The poster session chairs will have a final say in accepting all poster submissions, even for DC participants. The posters themselves have no predefined formatting, but dimensions may not exceed A0 paper size (841mm x 1189mm / 33.1" x 46.8"). Participants are responsible for bringing a hardcopy poster for display during VisWeek. BioVis 2012: Contest and Poster Submissions due June 27th

Dear colleagues, Are you already planing your trip to BioVis (http://www.biovis.net) in Seattle this October? If not, then this a good time to get started. BioVis will take place on October 14th and 15th as part of the IEEE VisWeek conference. DEADLINES Poster and contest entries are due on June 27th. For details about the contest see below. KEYNOTE Our program is quickly taking shape and we are happy to announce that Christof Koch, CTO of the Allen Institute of Brain Science and Professor of Biology and Engineering at Caltech will be the BioVis 2012 keynote speaker. He will speak about the computational and informatics challenges of "MindScope", a large-scale effort to synthesize genomic, anatomical, physiological and theoretical knowledge into a description of the wiring scheme of the cortex, at both the structural and the functional levels. CONTEST We are excited to introduce our second annual data visualization challenge. Like last year's contest, this contest draws its inspiration from biological expression Quantitative Trait Locus (eQTL) data analysis. In 2011 we looked at how this data, which essentially catalogs how (potentially millions of) genotypic differences in an individual, cooperate to produce (potentially tens of thousands of) gene expression differences. While obviously a grand challenge, and pressing need for the biological and medical fields, the real payoff for this data comes from being able to use easily accessible sources of this data for an individual, for example blood, or saliva, to make predictions about difficult to access organs, such as brain or heart, where the immense regulatory network contains both similarities and differences. To address this need, our 2102 challenge builds on the successes of 2011 and addresses differential eQTL - analysis of the differences between eQTL regulatory networks in different tissues, and the corresponding challenge of conveying the biological meaning contained in immense volumes of metadata, regarding these differences. We invite contest contributions, big and small, to either the needs of visualizing and presenting the eQTL difference data, or the metadata, or any sub-aspect of these challenging problems. These are significant unsolved needs in the biological and life-sciences communities, and every contribution, will make a positive impact in this exciting and emerging field.
