For some visual languages this mediation is straightforward; using a mouse to access a drop-down menu is well-known to computer users. For others, this mediation can be enriched via sketch and gesture recognition. This is made possible by advances in commodity hardware. More formal visual languages allow experts to accurately specify complex systems, such as software architecture or chemical molecules. A visual language can also encompass complex human-computer interaction such as navigating a set of semantically linked videos. Indeed, precision of semantics underlies visual languages and computation. Aspects of visual computing are multi-faceted in goals that are to be achieved during information or language design. The following represents a short list of qualities that are of importance to the study within visual computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure, emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration, and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and science play key roles where certain practitioners focus on design and engineering of visual interactions whereas others analyze and study these interactions (i.e., science). The International Workshop on Visual Languages and Computing will explore these issues, and will be held in conjunction with the 2013 International Conference of Distributed Multimedia Systems (http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms13.html) For this year's special theme we request high-quality submissions on visual languages that increase the efficacy of various tasks, or on the effectiveness of visual languages themselves. Stancetaking, which is crucial for the social construction of meaning, involves expressions of attitudes, feelings, perspectives, judgements, doubts, trust and certainty. Stancetaking is a forceful factor in the communicative dynamics of Web-based social media such as websites, blogs, communities or forums. StaViCTA focuses on analyzing stance in such real-world streaming language data. Our goal is to identify the resources that language offers, how these resources act together and how they evolve in large amounts of digital text over time. This goal is achieved through the development of innovative, computational and interactive information visualization techniques. We propose a visual text analytics approach for the description, explanation and interpretation of stance in digital text media that includes automatic analyses seamlessly interwoven with interactive visualizations. This combination will make it possible for human beings to make sense of large and dynamic text data and allows for exploration, control and final evaluation of the analysis processes and results. Such an approach for analyzing stance is crucial for many application fields, including intelligence and security analytics, early warning and crisis management systems, financial analytics and business intelligence, and social media monitoring. REQUIREMENTS & ELIGIBILITY ------------------------------------------------- Applicants should hold a good MA degree in a relevant field of study. Good command of English is also required for all positions. The specific requirements for the different PhD positions are listed in the following: Position 1: The candidate should hold a good MA degree in Computer Science with an excellent background in information visualization, visual analytics, and/or human-computer interaction. Good programming skills and training in computer graphics are presupposed. Knowledge of visual text analytics, visualization of streaming data, machine learning or natural language processing is an advantage. Position 2: The candidate should hold a good MA degree in Computer Science or Computational Linguistics (or the equivalent), with an excellent background in machine learning/data mining and natural language processing. Experience with deep learning algorithms is an additional important qualification. Good programming skills (e.g. Java, Python) and a solid training in mathematics and statistics are required. Knowledge of linguistics and semantics is preferred. Position 3: The candidate should hold a good MA degree in English Linguistics (or comparable) with a solid background in semantics/pragmatics. Programming skills (e.g. Java, Python) and statistical training are advantages. Native or near-native command of English is a requirement. All three PhD students are expected to: - complete and defend a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration of four years; - collaborate with the other project members on common research targets; - regularly present intermediate research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in conference proceedings and journals. Even though the tasks of these researchers are varied, data visualization and analytics plays an important role. For industry and academics alike, visualization of social media data helps with hypothesis formation and supports the explanation of phenomena. The 2nd Workshop on Social Media Visualization (SocMedVis) will be held in conjunction with the International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM'13) in Boston, USA on 11th July 2013. The workshop is a venue for presentation of research and applications of visualization of social media data. Funded Ph.D. Position in Collaborative Geovisual Analytics

We are seeking candidates interested in pursuing doctoral research in the domain of geovisual analytics, with a specific focus on the design, development, and study of geovisual analytics tools that support collaborative input, exploration, and analysis of small-scale fisheries data. This research will occur as part of large international interdisciplinary research project titled "Too Big To Ignore: Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries Research". Although the specific analysis context is fixed (support for collaborative work with fisheries data), many other aspects of this research are open and flexible. Options include exploring collaborative geovisual analytics as a distributed web-based environment, in a collaborative table-top setting, or using mobile devices. Specific details and goals for the research will be crafted based on the skill set and research interests of the successful candidate. For this position, we are seeking candidates that meet one or more of the following requirements: (1) completed thesis-based Master's degree in Computer Science (or Geography/Geomatics or related disciplines, with a strong Computer Science background) (2) prior research experience or a strong research interest in geovisual analytics, GIS, or information visualization (3) prior experience or interest in fisheries and fisheries data analysis (4) superior oral and written communication skills in English The successful candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Orland Hoeber at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The Université catholique de Louvain invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Machine Learning/Information Visualisation, beginning July 1, 2013. The visual interpretation of data is an essential step to guide any further processing or decision making. Data visualization is tackled independently from two different angles in the scientific community. The domain of machine learning addresses mainly statistical, mathematical, and algorithmic aspects with dimensionality reduction (DR) techniques, whereas the field of information visualization focuses on the interaction with the user (man-computer interface, visual efficacy, user-friendliness). In this context, the project aims at bridging the two approaches. More specifically, the project intends to import the concepts of interactivity and controllability from the field of information visualization and to integrate them in advanced DR techniques in order to improve their acceptance by users and broaden their range of application. The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. degree delivered not earlier than July 1, 2007, and must not have the Belgian nationality. In addition, the candidate must not have lived in Belgium for more than 2 years since July 1, 2010. The net salary after deduction of taxes and social security is about 26000 euros per year, or more, depending on seniority. Applicants should be knowledgeable in machine learning, data mining, information visualisation, with a particular interest in manifold learning, dimensionality reduction and information retrieval. Applicants should have a strong background in computer science and applied mathematics. A working knowledge of English language is mandatory. French is an optional asset. Working location will be Louvain-la-Neuve, a lively pedestrian town in the suburbs of Brussels, where most of the Université catholique de Louvain is located. Dear colleague, apologies if you receive multiple copies. ------------------------- International Workshop on Diagram Logic and Cognition 2013 Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India 28th and 29th October 2013 http://www.cem.brighton.ac.uk/dlac2013/ Our world is increasingly visual, and diagrams are an essential aspect of many of the fields that try to make sense of it. These include demography, cartography, medical imaging, aviation, and so on. In particular, diagrammatic logic is gaining ground in logic and mathematics as an alternative to or when used in parallel with symbolic logics, and recent years have seen the appearance of increasingly expressive diagrammatic systems. Considering the growing interest in reasoning with diagrams in India, a session has been planned on the history, current state-of-the-art and future of diagrammatic logics such as Euler-Venn diagrams, concept diagrams and spider diagrams, to mention a few recent and representative systems. Though our main focus is on the following topics, submissions need not be limited to these. . History of diagrams . Inference in diagrammatic logics . Diagrams and cognition . Aesthetics and visual complexity We invite authors to submit an extended abstract (3-4 pages) via easychair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dlac2013. Accepted authors will then be required to prepare an 8-page paper for inclusion in the proceedings, which will be published online by CEUR (http://ceur-ws.org) As well as the refereed talks, we are delighted to be able to present several keynote speakers, including Dr Gem Stapleton -- see below for details. We also hope to include talks from several other distinguished researchers, whose names will be announced when available. The purpose of the workshop is twofold. Firstly, we want to gain deeper insights into the activities involved in reasoning with diagrammatic systems. The questions under consideration include: how can a modern, highly-expressive diagrammatic logic help with inferential tasks in practice, such as those undertaken in the field of knowledge engineering? What are the advantages and limitations of such a logic when considered for these tasks, and to what extent are any limitations defined by notations, tools, or the nature of the information itself? Answering these questions will lead to more suitable notations and better tools, and has a wide potential impact. Our second purpose, closely related to the first, is cognition. Reasoning through diagrams facilitates inferential tasks for a group of users known as the "visualisers". Recent research in cognitive science has examined the verbaliser-visualiser cognitive style classification. The category of visualiser can be divided into two contrasting groups: those with relatively high or low spatial ability. In recent work, Kozhevnikov has showed visualizers with high spatial ability usually generate abstract images whereas visualizers with low spatial ability tend to generate detailed pictorial images of individual objects. Barbara Tversky claims that when congruent mappings are made, the abstract concept matches the spatial representation, implying that abstract thought has roots in spatial world. The elegance of diagrams needs to be investigated from this perspective and these concepts should be considered in the context of the logic of diagrams. Finally, the use of diagrams as a vehicle of reasoning calls for simplicity, accessibility, visual clarity and expressiveness. Accordingly, our meeting will also focus on the topics of diagram aesthetics and visual complexity. Attendance at the workshop is free, but you will need to register in advance. Keynote speakers Gem Stapleton on Inference in Diagrammatic Logics (title and abstract to be announced) Dr Gem Stapleton is a Reader in Computer Science at the University of Brighton. She first began research into diagrams during 2001 and has continued working on them ever since. She has published around 70 articles on topics spanning diagrammatic logics, automated reasoning, automated diagram generation and layout, and sketch recognition technologies. Much of this research has been collaborative, with colleagues at the Universities of Auckland, Cambridge and Kent. Her research has been supported by Nokia, who are applying results of her research in practice. Gem has undertaken many roles in the diagrams and visual languages communities, including being the Steering Committee Chair for the Diagrams Conference Series and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing. .
