-------------- Call for Posters --------------- IEEE PacificVis 2013 Sydney, Australia, February 27 to March 1, 2013 http://sydney.edu.au/engineering/it/~pvis2013/ ----------------------------------------------- The 6th PacificVis Symposium (Pacific Visualization) will be held in Sydney, Australia from February 27 to March 1, 2013. As part of PacificVis, workshop/tutorial sessions will be held on February 26. PacificVis is an IEEE sponsored international visualization symposium held in the Asia-Pacific region, with the objective to foster greater exchange between visualization researchers and practitioners, and to draw more researchers in the Asia-Pacific region to enter this rapidly growing area of research. PacificVis 2013 is soliciting high quality poster proposals. The PacificVis 2013 poster program offers an opportunity to present innovative techniques in commercial products, work in progress, student projects, or non-traditional research. We especially welcome presentations of novel interface and interaction techniques for visualization. The objective is to foster exchange between researchers and practitioners in the fields of visualization and HCI. Extended abstracts of the accepted posters will be distributed at the conference, but these abstracts will NOT be included in the symposium proceedings and will NOT be considered publications. The same work can therefore be submitted to a journal or conference later. Posters should present at least partial results achieved with a new technique. Submissions describing unsubstantiated ideas for future research will not be accepted. Based on the results of paper review process, the PacificVis 2013 program committee will also decide to offer several authors to present their work as invited posters and we expect to build a high quality poster program based on these core contributions. Posters will be evaluated by the PacificVis 2013 Poster Co-Chairs based on the level of contribution, validity of the results, originality, and clarity of presentation. Submission Instructions Posters of up to 2 pages (two-column, single-spaced, 10 point font, including figures, tables and references) are invited. Manuscripts must be written in English, and follow the formatting guidelines. DOC and LaTeX templates are available at http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Track/pacvis.html. Submissions should be made electronically in Adobe PDF (no paper copy will be accepted) by e-mailing it to the Poster Co-Chairs (pvispstr(a)it.usyd.edu.au) by the deadline specified below. Their purpose is to enable a computer-supported collaboration between multiple users based on a seamless use of different devices for natural post-'Windows-Icons-Menu-Pointer' interaction, e.g., multi-display environments, multi-touch walls, interactive tabletops, tablet PCs, tangible user interfaces, or digital pen & paper. These environments can serve to support or augment group activities such as presentation, discussion, brainstorming, sketching, drafting, or sensemaking. While the original vision of interactive spaces can be traced back to the 1990s and 2000s, recent advances in commercially available hardware and software (e.g., multi-touch tabletops, ubiquitous smartphones and tablets, or pico projectors & depth cameras for gestural and 'touch anywhere' interaction) now allow to realize and evaluate formerly impossible designs and visions. This new generation of interactive spaces with natural user interfaces is of particular relevance in knowledge-intensive and collaborative domains, among them e-Creativity, e-Science, and e-Learning. The goal of this theme issue is to report on the current state of research on interactive spaces for co-located collaboration. This includes the underlying design, concepts and technologies as well as promising fields of application. This special issue will accept original research papers from HCI, Information Visualization, CSCW, e-Science, and CSCL. This multi-disciplinary perspective is intended to provide an overview of the field beyond the typical boundaries of disciplines. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): . Understanding users' natural collaboration in rooms. . Conceptual frameworks for natural user collaboration, learning, and interaction. . Design frameworks and theories for blending digital and physical objects and spaces. . ======================================================================== Blended Interaction: Envisioning Future Collaborative Interactive Spaces CHI 2013 Workshop http://hci.uni-konstanz.de/blendedinteraction2013/ ======================================================================== CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Blended Interaction is interaction in physical environments including meeting rooms, studios, or libraries that are augmented with post-WIMP UI technologies to blend the power of digital computing with natural work practices and collaboration. Blended Interaction combines the virtues of physical and digital artifacts, so that desired properties of each are preserved while integrating computing power in a considered manner. Examples of Blended Interaction range from digital pen & paper and pen & multi-touch interaction to tangible displays in rooms of mixed or augmented reality. The ACM CHI 2013 Workshop on "Blended Interaction: Envisioning Future Collaborative Interactive Spaces" is the first international workshop that will bring together leading experts in cognitive theories and post-WIMP designs and technologies to create a unified vision and theory of Blended Interaction in a multidisciplinary approach. WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS We invite submissions about the (1.) technology, (2.) vision, and (3.) theory of Blended Interaction and will carefully select participants to ensure an equal distribution of expertise from these three fields. Typical topics include, but are not limited to: * Display and sensor technologies that enable blending the digital and the physical * Interaction techniques and gestures that mimic and extend the real world * (Multi-)touch and/or pen input on everyday objects and surfaces * Tangible user interfaces, tangible information representations and tangible displays * Technology and designs for mixed and augmented reality * Collaboration concepts in interactive spaces, models and theories of collaboration * Theories and models of embodied cognition and natural interaction * Cognitive linguistics, conceptual blending, image schemata, metaphors * Models of reality-based and embodied interaction * Influence of proprioception and kinesthesia on cognition * Proxemics in human-computer interaction * Architecture, ergonomics and interior design of digitally-augmented physical environments * Visions of future human-computer interaction SUBMISSION DETAILS All papers should be submitted on the workshop homepage (http://hci.uni-konstanz.de/blendedinteraction2013/) by January 11, 2013. Participants will be selected based on their submission in either of two categories: 1.) short position papers (up to 4 pages in CHI extended abstracts format), in which they have to demonstrate informed positions about the topic 2.) workshop papers (up to 6 pages in CHI extended abstracts format) describing their on-going research. All contributions will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers from an international program committee. We will work hands-on with real eye-trackers and real data during the workshop, and discuss issues in the group. This workshop is intended to bring together a broad mix of researchers interested in eye movement data collection methods, ranging from the eye tracking novice who might wish to learn more about this empirical technique, to the seasoned eye tracking expert who wishes to share advanced analytical approaches with other like-minded empirical researchers. Part of the program will use parallel tracks to meet the needs of both novices and experts, and a ‘data challenge’ will form a key component of the meeting. **Visualization Evaluation** *A Special Issue of Information Visualization,* Guest Editors: Enrico Bertini, Petra Isenberg, Tobias Isenberg, Heidi Lam, Adam Perer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visualization has recently gained much relevance for its ability to cope with complex data analysis and communication. Thanks to its ability to convey complex concepts in an efficient manner it has been adopted in many contexts; from scientific laboratories to newspapers. While the overall use of visualization is accelerating, the growth of techniques for the evaluation of these systems has been slow. How do we measure the quality of a visualization? How do we decide on competing designs? How do we know whether a visualization meets its goal? These are only some of the questions researchers and practitioners are confronted with when designing visualization systems. To understand how, when and why visualization works, evaluation efforts should be targeted at the component level, the system level, and the work environment level. The commonly used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors, when used in isolation, appear to be insufficient to quantify the complex quality and usage of a visualization system, therefore new metrics and methods to better evaluate visualizations are needed. This special issue calls for innovative ideas about how to evaluate visualization and reflections about its state of the art. We call for papers dealing with evaluation in the fields of scientific visualization, information visualization, and visual analytics. We explicitly discourage submissions describing exclusively the process and outcome of a given evaluation unless the methodology itself is innovative. Postdoctoral Opening in Information Visualization/Visual Analytics, University of Washington The Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform advanced research and development in the areas of information visualization and visual analytics. The long-term goal is to develop a better understanding of the use of visual interfaces in analyzing and exploring large, dynamic text-based data sets and networks. This work will involve developing new algorithms to visualize networks and text. Modeling of the visual interface and the nature of human-computer interaction over large data sets may also be involved. The work will be performed as part of an interdisciplinary team of students and faculty with expertise in a wide range of domains including computer science, social science, biology, physics, and other sciences. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their research skills in all aspects from conceptualization to publication and presentation. HCDE offers a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment with links to multiple departments within UW and research labs and companies in the Seattle area and around the world. NOTE: This is a full-time, one-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to an additional year or two, depending on performance and availability of funding. Visualisations in BI must be intuitive and must support an interactive, collaborative and ubiquitous discovery process. These visualisations must deal both with data and knowledge exploration, and also with presentation of results to managers. Data in BI are stored in Data Warehouses and are generally large, heterogeneous, geo-localized and time-dependent. In addition, the discovery process involving visualisations in BI is necessarily interactive and highly user-centred. In this context, visualisations in BI must be dynamic and are not only concerned with the representation of data and knowledge, but also with the representation of operators acting on data. The results of an analysis in BI have to be presented to managers, which concerns not only the produced knowledge but also the facts that support this knowledge. Here visualisations can be used to report on the results and on the discovery process, a task where visualisations aesthetics and innovative technologies for data presentation come into play. BI thus creates important challenges in the visualisation domain. The aim of this symposium is precisely to make a state of the art and to contribute to these challenging objectives by covering all aspects of interactive visualisations in BI, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. Dear list members, I am looking for papers discussing if / how visualization helps detecting connections in a dataset. For instance, a discussion of how fast / accurately the most connected actor is detected in a dataset of relations in a social network, when this dataset is presented as a visual network as compared to just showing the raw, numerical source (this is just an example, I'd be interested in papers discussing similar situations as well). Dear all, The Public Research Centre - Gabriel Lippmann (Luxembourg) has opened two new permanent positions in the Visualization domain. The recently refocused mission of the ISC (Informatics, Systems and Collaboration) department is to use computer science to ease the understanding of complex big data coming from multiple and heterogeneous sources by primarily using visual representations accessed via any type of devices in various contexts of use. Four complementary domains have been identified as highly strategic for the years to come: Information Visualization Approaches and Techniques, Visual Analytics, Data Provisioning Issues for Visualization Purposes and Model-Driven Visualization Software. This offer is a unique opportunity to join a fast growing and ambitious team in the visualization domain. Various interdisciplinary collaborations are foreseen with our colleagues in environmental or material sciences as well as with external public or private organizations (e.g. in finance, manufacturing, public administration, energy, retail industry...).
