CALL FOR PAPERS Workshop on Social Media Visualization (SocMedVis) at the International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM'13) 11th July 2013, Boston, USA http://socmedvis.swansea.ac.uk Social media study and analysis brings researchers from many fields into a single setting. Even though the tasks of these researchers are varied, data visualization and analytics plays an important role. For industry and academics alike, visualization of social media data helps with hypothesis formation and supports the explanation of phenomena. The 2nd Workshop on Social Media Visualization (SocMedVis) will be held in conjunction with the International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM'13) in Boston, USA on 11th July 2013. The workshop is a venue for presentation of research and applications of visualization of social media data. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and industry practitioners interested in visual and interactive techniques for social media analysis to discuss their potential application to the social sciences, humanities, and industry. We solicit contributions that discuss novel techniques and applications of visualization and visual analytics approaches to social media data sources. Funded Ph.D. Position in Collaborative Geovisual Analytics

We are seeking candidates interested in pursuing doctoral research in the domain of geovisual analytics, with a specific focus on the design, development, and study of geovisual analytics tools that support collaborative input, exploration, and analysis of small-scale fisheries data. This research will occur as part of large international interdisciplinary research project titled "Too Big To Ignore: Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries Research". Although the specific analysis context is fixed (support for collaborative work with fisheries data), many other aspects of this research are open and flexible. Options include exploring collaborative geovisual analytics as a distributed web-based environment, in a collaborative table-top setting, or using mobile devices. Specific details and goals for the research will be crafted based on the skill set and research interests of the successful candidate. For this position, we are seeking candidates that meet one or more of the following requirements: (1) completed thesis-based Master's degree in Computer Science (or Geography/Geomatics or related disciplines, with a strong Computer Science background) (2) prior research experience or a strong research interest in geovisual analytics, GIS, or information visualization (3) prior experience or interest in fisheries and fisheries data analysis (4) superior oral and written communication skills in English The successful candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Orland Hoeber at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The Université catholique de Louvain invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Machine Learning/Information Visualisation, beginning July 1, 2013. The visual interpretation of data is an essential step to guide any further processing or decision making. Data visualization is tackled independently from two different angles in the scientific community. The domain of machine learning addresses mainly statistical, mathematical, and algorithmic aspects with dimensionality reduction (DR) techniques, whereas the field of information visualization focuses on the interaction with the user (man-computer interface, visual efficacy, user-friendliness). In this context, the project aims at bridging the two approaches. More specifically, the project intends to import the concepts of interactivity and controllability from the field of information visualization and to integrate them in advanced DR techniques in order to improve their acceptance by users and broaden their range of application. The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. degree delivered not earlier than July 1, 2007, and must not have the Belgian nationality. In addition, the candidate must not have lived in Belgium for more than 2 years since July 1, 2010. The net salary after deduction of taxes and social security is about 26000 euros per year, or more, depending on seniority. Applicants should be knowledgeable in machine learning, data mining, information visualisation, with a particular interest in manifold learning, dimensionality reduction and information retrieval. Applicants should have a strong background in computer science and applied mathematics. A working knowledge of English language is mandatory. French is an optional asset. Working location will be Louvain-la-Neuve, a lively pedestrian town in the suburbs of Brussels, where most of the Université catholique de Louvain is located. These include demography, cartography, medical imaging, aviation, and so on. In particular, diagrammatic logic is gaining ground in logic and mathematics as an alternative to or when used in parallel with symbolic logics, and recent years have seen the appearance of increasingly expressive diagrammatic systems. Considering the growing interest in reasoning with diagrams in India, a session has been planned on the history, current state-of-the-art and future of diagrammatic logics such as Euler-Venn diagrams, concept diagrams and spider diagrams, to mention a few recent and representative systems. Though our main focus is on the following topics, submissions need not be limited to these. . History of diagrams . Inference in diagrammatic logics . Diagrams and cognition . Aesthetics and visual complexity We invite authors to submit an extended abstract (3-4 pages) via easychair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dlac2013. Accepted authors will then be required to prepare an 8-page paper for inclusion in the proceedings, which will be published online by CEUR (http://ceur-ws.org) As well as the refereed talks, we are delighted to be able to present several keynote speakers, including Dr Gem Stapleton -- see below for details. We also hope to include talks from several other distinguished researchers, whose names will be announced when available. The purpose of the workshop is twofold. Firstly, we want to gain deeper insights into the activities involved in reasoning with diagrammatic systems. The questions under consideration include: how can a modern, highly-expressive diagrammatic logic help with inferential tasks in practice, such as those undertaken in the field of knowledge engineering? What are the advantages and limitations of such a logic when considered for these tasks, and to what extent are any limitations defined by notations, tools, or the nature of the information itself? Answering these questions will lead to more suitable notations and better tools, and has a wide potential impact. Our second purpose, closely related to the first, is cognition. Reasoning through diagrams facilitates inferential tasks for a group of users known as the "visualisers". Recent research in cognitive science has examined the verbaliser-visualiser cognitive style classification. The category of visualiser can be divided into two contrasting groups: those with relatively high or low spatial ability. In recent work, Kozhevnikov has showed visualizers with high spatial ability usually generate abstract images whereas visualizers with low spatial ability tend to generate detailed pictorial images of individual objects. Barbara Tversky claims that when congruent mappings are made, the abstract concept matches the spatial representation, implying that abstract thought has roots in spatial world. The elegance of diagrams needs to be investigated from this perspective and these concepts should be considered in the context of the logic of diagrams. Finally, the use of diagrams as a vehicle of reasoning calls for simplicity, accessibility, visual clarity and expressiveness. Accordingly, our meeting will also focus on the topics of diagram aesthetics and visual complexity. Attendance at the workshop is free, but you will need to register in advance. She first began research into diagrams during 2001 and has continued working on them ever since. She has published around 70 articles on topics spanning diagrammatic logics, automated reasoning, automated diagram generation and layout, and sketch recognition technologies. Much of this research has been collaborative, with colleagues at the Universities of Auckland, Cambridge and Kent. Her research has been supported by Nokia, who are applying results of her research in practice. Native Welsh speakers, for example, lose their ability to differentiate between green and blue as they acquire the language (4-month old babies can visually differentiate, adults cannot). Colorblindness affects around 8% of men and 0.4% of women. Gender modulates which designs we perceive as appealing and trustworthy. North Americans are relatively better at ignoring the context surrounding a focal object, whereas East Asians perceive such contextual information first. These differences affect our perception of interface designs and other visualizations, yet two substantial questions remain: (1) How can we provide visual designs that are equally usable by everyone? (2) How can we create personalized designs that cater to an individual's perceptual abilities and preferences? GOALS This workshop is aimed at defining common ground between the different strands of visual perception research in order to promote synergy and a shared understanding of how people perceive today's designs, and how their perception might differ. To accomplish this, we will begin the process of combining the broad range of visual perception knowledge to create a holistic approach to understanding users' visual perception. The resulting combined pool of knowledge will be used to provide design guidelines for generating interfaces better suited to the individual visual perception abilities of the users. SUBMISSIONS Some of the areas that workshop participants may have experience with include the following: Factors that influence the visual perception of designs: - Visual impairments and its effect on design - Situational impairments (e.g., lighting conditions) - Influences of cultural exposure on perception - Elderly users and the effect of age on perception Effects of these factors on HCI: - Aesthetic preferences as a decisive factor for user engagement - Visual cues that lead to more trust - Usability issues arising because of visual perception difficulties Adapting to perception abilities and visual preferences: - Measuring and modeling perception abilities - Automatic adaptation of designs to perception abilities and/or visual preferences We invite technical contributions and position papers from anyone interested in how people differ in their perception of designs. Technical contributions should focus on the influence of one or more factors of visual perception, such as age, culture, gender, impairments, or other influences that change how humans perceive design. Position papers should focus on a discussion of possible interactions between different factors, and how user interfaces can cater for users' holistic visual perception. Blended Interaction combines the virtues of physical and digital artifacts, so that desired properties of each are preserved while integrating computing power in a considered manner. Examples of Blended Interaction range from digital pen & paper and pen & multi-touch interaction to tangible displays in rooms of mixed or augmented reality. The ACM CHI 2013 Workshop on "Blended Interaction: Envisioning Future Collaborative Interactive Spaces" is the first international workshop that will bring together leading experts in cognitive theories and post-WIMP designs and technologies to create a unified vision and theory of Blended Interaction in a multidisciplinary approach. WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS We invite submissions about the (1.) technology, (2.) vision, and (3.) theory of Blended Interaction and will carefully select participants to ensure an equal distribution of expertise from these three fields. Typical topics include, but are not limited to: * Display and sensor technologies that enable blending the digital and the physical * Interaction techniques and gestures that mimic and extend the real world * (Multi-)touch and/or pen input on everyday objects and surfaces * Tangible user interfaces, tangible information representations and tangible displays * Technology and designs for mixed and augmented reality * Collaboration concepts in interactive spaces, models and theories of collaboration * Theories and models of embodied cognition and natural interaction * Cognitive linguistics, conceptual blending, image schemata, metaphors * Models of reality-based and embodied interaction * Influence of proprioception and kinesthesia on cognition * Proxemics in human-computer interaction * Architecture, ergonomics and interior design of digitally-augmented physical environments * Visions of future human-computer interaction SUBMISSION DETAILS All papers should be submitted using the EasyChair submission page for our workshop ( <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=blend13> https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=blend13) by January 18, 2013 (deadline extended!). Participants will be selected based on their submission in either of two categories: 1.) short position papers (up to 4 pages in CHI extended abstracts format), in which they have to demonstrate informed positions about the topic 2.) workshop papers (up to 6 pages in CHI extended abstracts format) describing their on-going research. All contributions will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers from an international program committee. Like in past workshops of the organizers (e.g., <http://hci.uni-konstanz.de/dcis> http://hci.uni-konstanz.de/dcis) we plan on publishing extended versions of selected workshop papers in a special issue on Blended Interaction of a scientific journal. Deadline for submissions: Jan 18th, 2013 (deadline extended!). Notifications of acceptance: Feb 8th, 2013. One author of each paper is required to register to the workshop and one day of CHI'13. The one-day workshop will take place in conjunction with CHI'13 in Paris on Sunday, April 28th 2013.
