10 Open PhD Positions for Environmental Informatics at the Vienna University of Technology In the framework of the doctoral college "Environmental Informatics", expected to start in March 2013 for a period of 3 years, the Vienna University of Technology has 10 open PhD student positions of which 5 positions are dedicated to female students. An accepted PhD student will be paid a salary of 949.50 EUR per month, 14 times per year for 15 hours/week working basis (salary scale 2012). Additional payments are possible based on availability of external funding sources (up to 35.448 EUR per year for 40 working hours/week in the salary scale 2012). The doctoral college "Environmental Informatics" as an interdisciplinary approach aims to establish research collaboration amongst Architecture & Planning, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Informatics and Mathematics and Geoinformation. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biological Data Visualization =========================================== The Computational Bioscience Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine invites applications for an NLM (NIH) funded post-doctoral fellowship. The successful candidate will conduct interdisciplinary research in biological data visualization and work closely with Dr. Carsten Görg and other faculty and researchers in the Computational Bioscience Program. A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related discipline, and being a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident are minimal requirements. The ideal candidate would also have a background in information visualization or visual analytics, and experience in visualizing and analyzing structured data, such as networks, as well as unstructured data, such as textual documents. Programming skills in Java, web-based graphics development, and domain knowledge in biology are beneficial. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her research, publication, and presentation skills under mentorship from Dr. Görg. Start date: Immediately. The group conducts work at the intersection of information visualization, visual analytics, HCI, and CSCW. Our goals are to improve the analysis and visualization of large and complex datasets by combining analysis methods with interactive visualizations (see http://www.aviz.fr/) *TOPIC AREA* The general research area of this PhD position is focused at the intersection of Information Visualization and Computer Supported Cooperative Work. *TOPIC DETAILS* The goal of this PhD is to find ways in which single-user and multi-user data analysis tools can be effectively integrated. There are many ways the future PhD student can begin to tackle this problem. For example by doing research on: * technological infrastructure to support the transition (e.g. tangible interfaces, multi-display environments) * software infrastructure (toolkits) to help others implement visualization tools with both single- and multi-user aspects * data representation and interaction techniques that help to build a bridge between individual (asynchronous) and team work for visual data analysis * qualitative studies of how people switch between individual and collaborative work A contribution of this PhD will be to derive a first set of design considerations on how to support the transition between individual and collaborative work with visualization and interaction.
