It also welcomes work that brings attention to the user experience and designing personalized and adaptive behavior change technologies. ** Virtual Assistants, Conversational Interactions, and Personalized Human-Robot Interaction ** This track invites works investigating new models and techniques for adapting synthetic companions (e.g., virtual assistants, chatbots, social robots) to individual users. With the conversational modality so in vogue across disciplines, this track welcomes work highlighting the model and deployment of synthetic companions driven by conversational search and recommendation paradigms. ** Research Methods and Reproducibility** This track invites submissions on methodologies to evaluate personalized systems, benchmarks, and measurement scales, with particular attention to the reproducibility of results and techniques. Furthermore, the track looks for submissions that report new insights from reproducing existing works. ** Submission and Review Process** For UMAP 2024 we encourage two kinds of submissions (reviewers will comment on whether the size is appropriate for each contribution), in the ACM new single-column format<https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template>: * Long papers should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 14 pages (excluding references, which do not count towards the limit). Each accepted long paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. * Short papers typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. In particular, novel but significant proposals will be considered for acceptance to this category despite not having gone through sufficient experimental validation or lacking strong theoretical foundation. Each accepted short paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented either as an oral presentation or at the poster session. UMAP uses a double-blind review process. [Vacancy] PhD researcher in Visual Analytics applied to Multi-layer Networks

The Visual Data Analysis Lab at the KU Leuven in Belgium invites applications for a fully-funded PhD researcher in Visual Analytics applied to Multi-layer Networks. Networks and graphs - both static and dynamic - play an important role in data science. Not only can they represent primary relational data (e.g. gene interactions) but many algorithms generate networks either as intermediate or final output (e.g. DBSCAN clustering and topological data analysis). In particular, these data structures are critical when investigating (biological and other) systems as a whole. We can quantitatively compare networks at different resolutions, and distinguish between changes in topology and changes in characteristics of the nodes and links themselves. Although many measures exist to do so (including degree, closeness, betweenness, etc), they mainly focus on the amount of difference but fall short in giving real insight in the quality of that difference. We want to focus on this qualitative understanding of networks rather than only a quantitative one. We want to develop a human-in-the-loop visual analytics toolkit to support the user in exploring differences between two or more networks in depth. Visual Analytics (VA) is often described as the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by the visual interface and combines interactive data visualisation and novel visual design on one hand with machine learning on the other. The methodology will involve - among other things - custom visual design, definition and implementation of interestingness features, as well as definition of novel distance metrics for topological data analysis. This will be applied to different types of multi-layer networks (e.g. with/without ordering in 2 or more dimensions). Keywords: graph, network, topological data analysis, visual analytics, data visualisation, multilayer networks Profile: The ideal candidate: * has a Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioscience Engineering or similar, with distinction (required) * has a solid understanding of network analysis / graph theory and a strong foundation in general data visualisation principles and techniques * has experience in topological data analysis (TDA) * has good programming and data analysis skills (incl using Python and if possible Javascript) * can work independently as well as part of a collaborative cross-domain research team * is proficient in oral and written English, possess excellent communication and multi-tasking skills, is team-oriented, proactive and result-driven. Because of the immense design space for optimization, it can take both novices and experts substantial effort to derive desired visualization results from data for exploration or communication. Following the resurgence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in recent years, in the field of visualization, there is a growing interest and opportunity in applying AI to perform data transformation and to assist the generation of visualization, aiming to strike a balance between cost and quality. The use of visualization to enhance AI is the other active line of research. This workshop, held in conjunction with IEEE PacificVis 2024, aims at exploring this emerging area of research and practice by fostering communication between visualization researchers and practitioners. Attendees will be introduced to the latest and greatest research innovations in AI-enhanced visualization (AI4VIS) as well as visualization-enhanced AI (VIS4AI), and also learn about further research opportunities. Call for Papers: The 3rd International Workshop on eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports (XRIOS)

The 3rd International Workshop on eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports (XRIOS) Overview The eXtended Reality (XR) technologies have been applied to a wide range of industries and occupational areas for maintenance, quality control, training, education, remote collaboration, etc. The industries can benefit from XR by providing their employees with timely and efficient instructions. The users can improve their work performance while reducing mental and physical workload through effective XR systems. However, as workplace conditions become diverse, the XR technologies should be adaptive and innovative to meet the new industrial needs. Furthermore, as XR applications supporting industrial and occupational tasks include physical movements and activities, it is necessary to perform a variety of assessments from ergonomics and physiological perspectives. This workshop—eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports ( XRIOS)—aims to identify the current state of XR research and the gaps in the scope of human factors and ergonomics, mainly related to the industrial and occupational tasks, and discuss potential future research directions. XRIOS will build a community that bridges XR developers, human factors, and ergonomics researchers interested in industrial and occupational applications. Organization XRIOS (https://sites.google.com/view/xrios) will be organized as a half-day in-person workshop held either on March 16 or 17, 2024 at IEEE VR 2024.
