You will work in the context of SANE, a project held by TU Vienna (Austria), the University of Cologne (Germany) and the University of Newcastle (United Kingdom). This project arrangement gives you unique career opportunities, including student exchanges abroad, regular meetings with researchers from the other institutions participating to the project. We are looking for a PhD candidate to work from the TU Wien, at the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology, in the Research Unit of Visual Analytics. We offer a position as project assistant (prae-doc) limited to 3 years for 30 hours/week (that can beex-tended to 40). In this position, you will begin your doctoral journey studying problems related to the topic of event-based (or “temporal”) network visualization. In Event-based networks, the time coordinates where the nodes and the edges are “active” are an explicit element of the representation, differently from traditional timeslicing where a time structure is imposed over the input data. You will apply these concepts to the problem of Information Diffusion. Information Diffusion studies how “information” flows and spreads through an underlying network, and has been used to model, simulate, and predict natural and human-made phenomena in countless different domains (e.g., pathogen spread, malware outbreak in computer networks, viral marketing, etc.). We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback—the ideal participant is a doctoral student about two years from finishing their Ph.D. We will also consider advanced Master's students and junior Ph.D. students provided their research plan is sufficiently developed to benefit from the discussion at the DC. The postdoc fellow will conduct research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics in close collaboration with ISOVIS members, other research groups of the department, and domain experts within the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). Work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to the reporting of the results in publications. Thematically, the research interests of the successful candidate can be aligned with the research foci of the group (cf. group web site), but we are especially interested in complementary expertise in the areas of InfoVis and/or VA. In this workshop we aim to bring together researchers from both Visual Analytics and Process Mining, to learn, create a common language, spark collaborations, and advance both fields. Process Mining is a data-driven discipline that focuses on extracting valuable insights and knowledge from the vast amount of event data generated within organizations. It involves the discovery, analysis, and improvement of process models by leveraging techniques from data science, machine learning, and data analytics. By examining event logs and historical data, process mining aims to provide a clear, objective view of how processes actually operate, identifying bottlenecks, deviations, and opportunities for optimization. In turn, this supports organizations in making more data-informed decisions, and enhance operational efficiency. Visual analytics is an interdisciplinary field that combines data visualization, analytical techniques, and interactive interfaces to help people make sense of complex and often large datasets. It focuses on using the power of visual representations to facilitate data exploration, pattern recognition, and decision-making. By enabling users to interact with data through graphical interfaces, visual analytics promotes a deeper understanding of information, uncovers hidden insights, and supports the detection of trends, anomalies, and relationships that might be challenging to discern through traditional data analysis methods alone. We believe that process mining and visual analytics can mutually benefit each other. Until now, there has been limited interaction between the two fields, despite their shared objectives. In process mining, the emphasis has traditionally been on data extraction and process discovery, often neglecting the visualization aspect, whereas in visual analytics, event visualization efforts have often overlooked the wealth of process mining techniques that can enhance visualizations and analysis. Bridging this gap and fostering collaboration between the two fields will not only lead to more informed, efficient, and data-driven improvements in various domains but also advance the research and innovation in both process mining and visual analytics, ultimately contributing to a more holistic and integrated approach to understanding and optimizing complex processes. Topics and Scope ---------------- We encourage submissions from all areas on the intersection of visual analytics and process mining. *** Call for Graduate Symposium: Diagrams 2024 *** 14th International Conference on the Theory and Application of Diagrams September 27 – October 1, 2024 University of Münster, Germany www.diagrams-conference.org/2024 *** Highlights *** - Graduate Symposium - Three Tracks: Main, Philosophy, and Psychology and Education - Best Paper and Best Student Paper awards - Keynote speakers: Mateja Jamnik, Catarina Dutilh Novaes and Barbara Tversky *Graduate Symposium submission deadline May 31, 2024.* ***************************************************************** The Diagrams conference provides a united forum for all researchers with an interest in the study of diagrams. The conference fosters multi-disciplinarity and allows researchers from areas such as computer science, mathematics, psychology, philosophy, history (of science, art, etc.), education research, and more to meet and share their perspectives on the theory and application of diagrams. The goal of the Diagrams 2024 Graduate Symposium is twofold. Firstly, the Symposium will provide senior graduate students and recent Masters and Doctoral graduates with the opportunity to present their research. Established researchers will provide feedback and comments on each of the presentations. Secondly, the Symposium will provide students with an opportunity to network with each other as future colleagues. In previous Diagrams Graduate Symposiums, lively and useful discussions have enabled students to receive suggestions about their on-going research and allowed more experienced participants to hear some fresh ideas and view some of the new trends in the field. ***************************************************************** *Submission Requirements* Submissions that focus on any aspect of diagrams research are welcome. Topics of interest are the same as those given in the calls for papers for the <http://www.diagrams-conference.org/2021/index.php/calls/> three conference tracks: https://diagrams-2024.diagrams-conference.org/calls/main-track/ https://diagrams-2024.diagrams-conference.org/calls/philosophy-of-diagrams/ https://diagrams-2024.diagrams-conference.org/calls/psychology-and-educatio… Students who wish to present their work at the symposium must submit a 3-page report describing: – their thesis topic, – the approach being taken, – the work that has been completed, – the expected contributions of the research, and – any necessary acknowledgements (for example, supervision team and source funding. Students should be the sole author of their submission and the supervisor names should be included in the acknowledgements section. The report must be submitted in Springer LNCS format.
