[Vacancy] PhD researcher in Visual Analytics applied to Multi-layer Networks

The Visual Data Analysis Lab at the KU Leuven in Belgium invites applications for a fully-funded PhD researcher in Visual Analytics applied to Multi-layer Networks. Networks and graphs - both static and dynamic - play an important role in data science. Not only can they represent primary relational data (e.g. gene interactions) but many algorithms generate networks either as intermediate or final output (e.g. DBSCAN clustering and topological data analysis). In particular, these data structures are critical when investigating (biological and other) systems as a whole. We can quantitatively compare networks at different resolutions, and distinguish between changes in topology and changes in characteristics of the nodes and links themselves. Although many measures exist to do so (including degree, closeness, betweenness, etc), they mainly focus on the amount of difference but fall short in giving real insight in the quality of that difference. We want to focus on this qualitative understanding of networks rather than only a quantitative one. We want to develop a human-in-the-loop visual analytics toolkit to support the user in exploring differences between two or more networks in depth. Visual Analytics (VA) is often described as the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by the visual interface and combines interactive data visualisation and novel visual design on one hand with machine learning on the other. The methodology will involve - among other things - custom visual design, definition and implementation of interestingness features, as well as definition of novel distance metrics for topological data analysis. This will be applied to different types of multi-layer networks (e.g. with/without ordering in 2 or more dimensions). Keywords: graph, network, topological data analysis, visual analytics, data visualisation, multilayer networks Profile: The ideal candidate: * has a Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioscience Engineering or similar, with distinction (required) * has a solid understanding of network analysis / graph theory and a strong foundation in general data visualisation principles and techniques * has experience in topological data analysis (TDA) * has good programming and data analysis skills (incl using Python and if possible Javascript) * can work independently as well as part of a collaborative cross-domain research team * is proficient in oral and written English, possess excellent communication and multi-tasking skills, is team-oriented, proactive and result-driven. Because of the immense design space for optimization, it can take both novices and experts substantial effort to derive desired visualization results from data for exploration or communication. Following the resurgence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in recent years, in the field of visualization, there is a growing interest and opportunity in applying AI to perform data transformation and to assist the generation of visualization, aiming to strike a balance between cost and quality. The use of visualization to enhance AI is the other active line of research. This workshop, held in conjunction with IEEE PacificVis 2024, aims at exploring this emerging area of research and practice by fostering communication between visualization researchers and practitioners. Attendees will be introduced to the latest and greatest research innovations in AI-enhanced visualization (AI4VIS) as well as visualization-enhanced AI (VIS4AI), and also learn about further research opportunities. The 3rd International Workshop on eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports (XRIOS) Overview The eXtended Reality (XR) technologies have been applied to a wide range of industries and occupational areas for maintenance, quality control, training, education, remote collaboration, etc. The industries can benefit from XR by providing their employees with timely and efficient instructions. The users can improve their work performance while reducing mental and physical workload through effective XR systems. However, as workplace conditions become diverse, the XR technologies should be adaptive and innovative to meet the new industrial needs. Furthermore, as XR applications supporting industrial and occupational tasks include physical movements and activities, it is necessary to perform a variety of assessments from ergonomics and physiological perspectives. This workshop—eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports ( XRIOS)—aims to identify the current state of XR research and the gaps in the scope of human factors and ergonomics, mainly related to the industrial and occupational tasks, and discuss potential future research directions. XRIOS will build a community that bridges XR developers, human factors, and ergonomics researchers interested in industrial and occupational applications. Organization XRIOS (https://sites.google.com/view/xrios) will be organized as a half-day in-person workshop held either on March 16 or 17, 2024 at IEEE VR 2024. Call for Papers XRIOS 2024 seeks various types of papers (up to 8 pages, excl. references), which include: - Position Papers that identify and share insightful opinions and ideas. - Survey Papers that capture the current states of research and present potential research gaps and future directions. - Project Papers that give an overview of an ongoing/planning project by describing the approach and goals of the project. - Research Papers that contribute state-of-the-art advances and provide results as evidence, which can include industrial/occupational XR applications and systems. CFP: Workshop on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Transparency and Ethics in XR (IDEATExR) To be held in conjunction with the 2024 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces March 16-21, 2024 | Orlando, Florida USA Check out our website at: https://ideatexr.carrd.co/ <https://ieeevrpublicity-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2p3CcBDLBBxLBELLYvK0DJh6…> ABSTRACT The potential benefits of XR should be for all, regardless of their cultural background, gender identity, race, neurodiversity, ethnicity, economic status, age, etc. However, our community is still facing challenges preventing equal involvement. Most research within this space relies on the M-WEIRD user populations and is done by M-WEIRD researchers (Male, White, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic), effectively missing most of the world’s population [1], thus hindering generalizability of findings and diversity of ideas. In fact, approximately 95% of the global population is excluded from VR research [1] and only 15% of first-paper authors at ISMAR and IEEEVR are women [2]. Moreover, the ethics informing XR research have been identified as one of the grand challenges facing human-computer interaction research today, with the replication crisis featuring transparency as a critical step for remediation. These factors make *formal discussions surrounding inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, transparency, and ethics in XR not only timely – but necessary. **And we want you to be a part of them.* It’s important to note that these concerns are also relevant to technical work not involving human participants as they also play a role in research teams, ideas, proposed solutions, conduct, etc. Due to the important, evolving, and shifting nature of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, transparency, and ethics in XR, this workshop has five main goals: 1. To provide a vehicle through which to understand better the pulse of the community surrounding issues of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, transparency, and ethics in XR, 2. To shine a spotlight on these issues for community members who perhaps haven’t seen or given them much consideration, 3. To celebrate those that are engaging in research either true to the spirit of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, transparency, and ethics in XR, or those engaging in research about these topics specifically, 4. To help researchers better understand how to ensure their work are more inclusive, diverse, equitable, accessible, transparent, and ethical, particularly in their software and study design, 5. To spotlight how people are represented in XR technologies (or not) as researchers, designers, participants, and users, 6. And to bring together disparate perspectives and research foci together under a shared goal to be inclusive, diverse, equitable, accessible, transparent, and ethical in XR. This goal can be shared by software, hardware, and human-focused researchers. Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to provide their insights on what is working for our community, as well as what isn’t – effectively helping to shape the future of IEEEVR and XR research. TOPICS OF INTEREST This workshop has six facets: inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, transparency, and ethics. We expect researchers to submit early work that has already shown a commitment to one or more of these aforementioned facets. These could include work with diverse participants, work examining skin-tone rendering in AR, computer vision algorithms for differently-abled hands, testing of accessibility and usability of a VR app for those with different sensory abilities, etc. Further, while we anticipate this next type of paper to be rarer, we anticipate papers that feature research explicitly regarding the realm of diversity in XR. Finally, position papers informed by either survey of the literature or profound experience in the facets of this workshop are also well within our scope. We welcome lightning talk proposals 1 page in length, excluding references (what your talk is about and how it fits into IDEATExR). These are 5-10 minute ‘talks’. They can be used to promote an idea, share preliminary ideas and get feedback, or propose collaborations based around the goals of IDEATExR.
