Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD2021 will be held (hopefully) at Tuebingen from September 14 to 17, 2021 with a reception on the evening of September 14. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 13-14, 2021. In the event that a physical conference will not be possible, GD2021 will, like GD2020, be held virtually. Regardless of the format, we are committed to offering remote participation for both presenters and the audience. POSTER SUBMISSION INFORMATION ----------------------------- The submission of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas is solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to two pages, excluding references, in LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster. Abstracts of accepted posters will appear in the conference proceedings (two pages+references). The maximum size for a poster is A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). The posters must be in portrait mode. Each submission will then consist of two pdf files (the two-page abstract and the poster) and must include names, email addresses and contact information of the contributors. Contributions must be submitted via EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2021 Each poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the abstract will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa/travel restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will take place on October 27, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/>, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS. VizSec program will be presented in an online format with virtual presentations. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user-assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, penetration testing, and other related research topics. We are soliciting Poster Submissions. Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. In line with the full conference, the presentation of posters will take place online. There will be 1-2 dedicated poster sessions in which poster authors can virtually meet and discuss their work with conference participants. An additional web presence of posters will replace the traditional physical installation of poster boards. More concrete details will follow soon. Awards There will be an award for Best Poster. This award will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly present their work to the audience. The award will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. *Call for Participation:* Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) Workshop at IEEE VIS 2021 The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop is back for a 4th year. In this workshop, we seek to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on *how machine learning can support visualization*. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. MLUI 2021 largely plans to continue the momentum in this research area that the previous workshops have initiated. This year, we plan to accept both short and long papers jointly in the same submission block. Full papers have a length of 5-10 pages (not including references), while short papers are 2-4 pages (plus references). Short papers are intended to capture either (1) limited aspects of a larger work that fit our call or (2) late-breaking work not yet mature enough for a full paper submission. The option of submitting a short paper replaces the posters track that we previously offered at MLUI. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of reviewers that we will organize. This committee will include the workshop committee members. The size of the committee will be determined by the number of submissions, such that each submission is reviewed by at least 2 committee members. Both full and short paper metadata (author information, title, university, etc.) as well as the submissions themselves will be posted to the workshop website in advance of the event. ======================================================================== Call for Participation 6th Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities 24th October, 2021 http://vis4dh.dbvis.de/ ======================================================================== We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 6th Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities, “VIS4DH”, under the theme of The Politics of Scale. This will be a full-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2021. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2021 in two ways - you can submit to the Paper track (see below), or you can submit to the Provocations track, which will be published by end of May. Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the humanities, social sciences and all branches of visualization. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. We are particularly interested in papers and provocations that bring different disciplines together. More information is available on http://vis4dh.dbvis.de/. _______________________________________________ # CfP - Paper Track This year, VIS4DH will revolve around the topic of “scale”. Visualization is often celebrated as a method to facilitate the exploration and interpretation of “big data”. But is scale a relevant yardstick to measure and characterize the challenges connected to humanities research questions? Scholars have warned about the development and focus on large-scale digital infrastructures within the humanities, suggesting that smaller datasets and lighter infrastructures could better support the needs of humanist researchers. Additionally, critical voices have pointed out the risk of reproducing assumptions about dominant cultures and groups while further marginalizing those who are less likely to be remembered. ‘Data humanism’ has been proposed to highlight the creative potential of “small data” in terms of personal impact. Choices of scale—in terms of data, tools, or teams—influence not only project outcomes but also research methods and processes. This year, we invite work around (but not limited to) the following questions: - Large scale approaches have been said to easily ignore context, to fetishize size and inflate their technical and scientific capabilities, which they rarely deliver. How can we mitigate these issues and effects of scale for existing large scale data infrastructures? - What other motivating factors should be taken into account regardless of scale? Are “volume, velocity and variety” our defining challenges, or should we deliberately shift the problem characterization in humanities projects towards data scarcity, sparsity, polysemy, uncertainty, historicity, quality, and contextuality? - What goes unseen when we look at massive datasets and large trends? How can information visualization techniques assist in bridging small and large scale findings? - How can we envision small data, small processes, small impact for visualization in the humanities? - What trade-offs in visibility (and in-visibility) are made when we consider different scales in projects at the intersection of visualization and the humanities research? - How can research at the intersection of visualization and the humanities counteract the dangers of data colonialism and of excluding marginalized positions? We invite papers at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide both theoretical and applied perspectives around these and other questions. For our paper track we are seeking works from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. # Submission format Submissions will take the form of short (4-6 page - excluding references) papers. Submissions are meant to describe and critically discuss works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including applied case studies and empirical results and/or theoretical perspectives. We welcome works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their paper at the workshop as a pre-recorded video plus online discussion. This year’s submissions to the Provocations track should reflect on one or several of the following questions: - What are the dangers of subscribing exclusively to either large-scale or small-scale approaches at the intersection of visualization and humanities research? - Is the dichotomy “large-scale or small-scale” real or perceived? And how much do questions of scale matter, if at all? - Do large-scale approaches to data and visualization promote dominant cultures? How do they play into existing marginalizations and biases in society? - Are questions of scale inherently political, and if so, in what sense? What is their influence on methodological choices? # Submission format Submissions to the Provocations track should take the following format: - Title: Provide a title that roughly describes the topic of your provocation/viewpoint. - Summary of provocation (1 sentence): One-sentence summary that describes the essence of your viewpoint/argument. - Provocation statement & argument (200 words): Provides a brief description of your provocation and its argument. - Counter-Perspective(s) (optional, 100 words): Provides potential counter-arguments to your provocation. *VISUALIZATION SCIENTIST POSITION AT KAUST VISUALIZATION CORE LAB* *Description:* The KAUST Visualization Core Lab (KVL) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative scientist with a strong background in HPC visualization design and support. KVL advances the KAUST mission by providing cutting-edge visualization and data science services; collaborating with domain researchers to accelerate discoveries through large-data visualization, machine learning, and data science; and supporting the needs of KAUST and in-Kingdom entities by providing access to and training on state-of-the-art visualization hardware and software for scientific discovery. The scientist will work in collaboration with other team members to build cutting-edge interactive scientific visualization workflows for domain scientists and industry partners on a variety of platforms, including ultra-high-resolution tiled displays and virtual reality environments. The scientist will also design and implement HPC visualization and analysis pipelines from simulations running on supercomputing facilities at KAUST, including Shaheen (KAUST’s Cray XC40 system) and other HPC GPU-based clusters. The scientist should be equally comfortable in software development, scientific visualization, HPC systems, and big data. Some knowledge of deep learning techniques and willingness to learn and explore the data science area will also be required.
