We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. Good day, Are you interested in contributing to cutting edge research in visualization design? Then this email is for you! We are conducting a study to understand how people find and use existing examples when creating their own visualizations, such as when creating new bar charts, geographic maps, infographics, and more. We are seeking out participants for a 60-minute interview study (no more than 2 hours). In the session, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your process for creating new visualizations. Interviews will be remote and you will be interviewed only once. Participation is completely voluntary and the experience and data you share will be anonymous. After being anonymized, demographic data and answers to interview questions will be collected and shared as a resource for future academic research. EuroVis 2022 Call for Papers With this call for papers, we invite submission of high-quality papers that will set the standard and stimulate future trends in the field of visualization and visual analytics. Accepted full papers will be published in a special issue of Computer Graphics Forum, the International Journal of the Eurographics Association, after a two-stage peer-reviewing process. All accepted papers will be presented orally at the conference. EuroVis 2022 (http://conferences.eg.org/eurovis2022/) will be held in Rome, Italy on June 13-17, 2022. We encourage submissions from all areas of visualization and visual analytics. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: * Techniques: novel algorithms, visual encoding methods, and/or interaction techniques for data analysis, exploration, or communication. All sub-areas of data visualization and visual analytics are welcomed, including high-dimensional, time-series, spatial, geographic, text, hierarchical, and network data. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS The maximum length for submitted papers to the full papers track is 10 pages (in Computer Graphics Forum (CGF) style, including all images, but excluding references). Authors are encouraged to use supplementary documents to provide extra content. Papers exceeding the maximum allowed number of pages will be automatically rejected. Submissions must be made using the Computer Graphics Forum style, using the conference LaTeX template for full papers. A LaTeX style sheet and overleaf template will be provided as well as a sample document explaining the required format. Authors have the option to submit their papers anonymously. In contrast to previous years, double-blind reviewing is optional, not required: authors may choose to disclose their identities to the reviewers. The reviewing process does not consider anonymity as a factor. The process will attempt to preserve anonymity of authors of anonymized submissions. However, the program committee, which is responsible for half of the reviews, will know the authors of submissions reviewed by them. Topics of interest are: 1. Visualizing complex data a. Multimodal data: Vectors, tensors, time series, spectra, multifield, etc. b. High-dimensional data: Abstract parameter space, phase space, optimization landscapes, etc. 2. Supporting trusted decision making a. Uncertainty visualization and ensembles: Dealing with probabilistic data, ensembles of outcomes, etc. b. Human factors and usability: Perception, preventing misinterpretation, evaluation standards, etc. c. Interpretability of complex systems: Explainable AI, facilities data, etc. 3. Exploring new technological frontiers a. Visualization for data and technology at the edge: Remote experiments, loT, sensor networks, etc. b. Novel technology for visualization: VR/AR, non-standard displays, AI for visualization, etc. c. Extreme scale data: Interactive exploration of massive data 4. Equity in access to science: Tools and technology to support equal access to relevant data and universally interpretable analysis Invitation We invite community input in the form of two-page position papers that identify and discuss key challenges and opportunities to address the topics introduced above. The program committee will review these position papers and selected contributors will have the opportunity to participate in the workshop. Furthermore, the position papers will be used to shape the workshop agenda, identify panelists, and contribute to the workshop report. Position papers should not describe the authors’ current or planned research, contain material that should not be disclosed to the public, recommend specific solutions, or discuss narrowly-focused research topics. Rather, position papers should aim to improve the community’s shared understanding of the problem space, identify challenging research directions, and help to stimulate discussion. All submitted submissions will be published as part of the pre-workshop material and one author of each selected submission will be invited to participate in the workshop. Authors are not required to have a history of funding by the ASCR Computer Science program. Submission Guidelines Position papers should follow the following format: * Title * Authors (with affiliations and email addresses) * Topics: List of topics addressed by the position paper * Challenge: Identify limitations of state-of-the-art practice with examples * Opportunity: Describe how the identified challenges may be addressed, whether through new tools and techniques, new technologies, new methodologies, or new groups collaborating in the process * Timeliness or maturity: Why now? What breakthrough or change makes progress possible now where it wasn’t possible previously? What will be the impact of success? * References Each position paper must be no more than two pages including figures and references. The paper may include any number of authors but contact information for a single author who can represent the position paper at the workshop must be provided with the submission. There is no limit to the number of position papers that an individual or group can submit. Authors are strongly encouraged to follow the structure outlined above. Papers should be submitted in PDF format using the designated page on the workshop website. Selection Submissions will be reviewed by the workshop’s organizing committee using criteria of overall quality, relevance, likelihood of stimulating constructive discussion, and ability to contribute to an informative workshop report. Unique positions that are well presented and emphasize potentially-transformative research directions will be given preference.
