Dear colleagues, We would like to invite you to contribute to: VisGap - The Gap between Visualization Research and Visualization Software (co-located with EuroVis 2022, Rome, Italy) Over the years, many visualization methods and tools have been developed and published by the visualization research community. However, most of these are prototypes and never reach a state that can be reliably used by the target audience, e.g., domain scientists. Also, availability of these prototypes as source code or at least as executables is still the exception rather than the norm. The VisGap Symposium aims to shed a light on this gap between research and practical applicability, examine the obstacles every researcher faces, and propose solutions to overcome this problem as a community. VisGap'22 aims at gathering experts from all over the visualization community in order to advance the way our field works with software, sustains software, and values the effort our members put into developing said software. This year, we extend the scope of VisGap to include reproducibility and replicability. Both are cornerstones of the scientific method and essential for building trust in visualizations and increasing their acceptance, ultimately fostering adoption in the wild. Workshop Topics Topics include, but are not limited to: =============================================================================== * Requirements for successful visualization in applications in general * Domain-specific requirements for visualizations * Reflections on the research community and the visualization software ecosystem * Incentives and funding for developing/maintaining visualization research software * Legal requirements (e.g., licensing, certification) for visualizations in applications * Case studies of (un)successful visualization solutions in applications * Requirements for novel visualization libraries * Verification and validation in visualization (applications) ***NEW*** * Reproducibility of visualization ***NEW*** We solicit papers with 4-8 pages in the VisGap 2022 latex style (see above for the scope of the workshop), with an additional page allowed for references. All submissions must be original works that have not been published previously in any conference proceedings, magazine, journal, or edited book or must present a substantial extension of previous work (at least 30%). Papers are to be submitted via PCS. All submissions will undergo a single-blind, single-stage peer review process. Accepted papers will be published by the Eurographics Association, and be stored in the Eurographics Digital Library. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and participate in the VisGap 2022 workshop to present the accepted work. This call is oriented towards volunteers who have not served as a PC member in the past – past PC members do not need to submit this form to be considered again. Even though volunteering does not guarantee a spot on the PC, all volunteers will be considered with great interest and gratitude. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information over-plotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The BigVis workshop aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. BigVis attempts to attract attention from the research areas of Data Management & Mining, Information Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction and highlight novel works that bridge together these communities.
