Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for about 30 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing, as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD 2022 will be held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, on September 13-16, 2022, with a reception on the evening of September 13. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 12-13, 2022. While we hope that a physical conference will be possible, details of the exact format of the venue (onsite, online, hybrid) will be announced before the submission deadline. Regardless of the format, we are committed to offering remote participation for both presenters and the audience. The code of conduct for the GD conference can be found at http://graphdrawing.org/codeOfConduct.html PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. To promote a balanced coverage of the field, GD has two distinct tracks, and papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of the two tracks. However, all program committee members may review papers from either track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric and topological graph theory * Computational topology of graphs on surfaces * Geometric network design and optimization * Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects -------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development and evaluation of network visualization algorithms, systems, and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Visualization of networks in real world applications * Engineering of graph drawing algorithms and network visualization systems * Benchmarks and experimental studies of algorithms, systems, and user interfaces for graph drawing and network visualization * Cognitive studies on network visualization readability and user interaction * Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs and networks Authors of accepted applied papers can request the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the poster session. Short papers ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions will have a strict number of lines limit. Regular papers must have at most 400 lines, (excluding references and figures) and at most 14 pages (excluding references). Short papers must have at most 225 lines (excluding references and figures) and at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the line/page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2022 Posters & Contest ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site https://graphdrawing.github.io/gd2022/pages/contest/ LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE-BLIND REVIEW PROCESS -------------------------------- This year, for the first time in the GD conference, the review process will be handled in a “lightweight double-blind mode”. This means that authors are not allowed to reveal their identity in the paper that they submit to GD'22, but are free to disseminate draft versions of the paper prior to the conference and to give talks on the topic as they normally would. In particular, the submitted paper should not contain authors' names, affiliations, and email addresses. References to their own related work are allowed, as long as the supporting text maintains anonymity (e.g., using sentences in the third person, anonymising references). Members of the Program Committee will not have the identity of the authors of any paper revealed to them during the entire review process. To handle conflicts of interest effectively, authors will be offered the opportunity to declare conflict of interest with relevant PC members when they submit their paper. PUBLICATION: PROCEEDINGS AND SPECIAL ISSUES ----------------------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository at the same time as submitting their camera-ready versions, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements") are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa/travel restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). Invitations to the special issues will be sent at most two weeks after the conference. A TVCG papers session at the Graph Drawing conference will also feature regular TVCG papers. TODAY Invitation to the March ‘22 BioVis meetup: Visualizing biological localizations - Spatial data in single cell & bioimage datasets. — Speaking: Fabian Theis Squidpy - Spatial Single Cell Analysis and Visualisation. Fabian Theis is head of the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich and the director of HelmholtzAI and Associate Faculty at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He uses artificial intelligence to unlock the secrets of human cells. He uses single cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics data to study how do cells interact and what goes wrong with diseases at the cellular level. Heba Sailem: Visualisation of multiplexed and bioimaging data using ShapoGraphy. Heba Sailem is Sir Henry Wellcome Research Fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. She pioneered the development and application of several computational approaches to interrogate complex imaging data by artificial intelligence and multi-omics data integration. Call for Participation: GD Contest 2022 with Remote Live Challenge

Dear Information Visualizers, the 30th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization will take (hopefully) place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 16, 2022. As has been tradition since 1994, the symposium will be accompanied by a Graph Drawing Contest, allowing all community members to demonstrate their graph drawing skills in a fun competitive setting. Due to the uncertainty regarding future travel and physical meeting restrictions caused by the Corona virus outbreak, the contest will be either held completely online or in a hybrid format. Details of the exact format of the contest will be announced around the Graph Drawing submission deadline. The contest has two parts: the Creative Topics and the Live Challenge. 1) Live Challenge Following popular tradition, a live challenge will be held the day before the symposium in a format similar to a typical programming contest. Teams are presented with a collection of challenge graphs and have approximately one hour to submit their highest scoring drawings. This year, the challenge focuses on minimizing the planar polyline edge-length ratio on a ﬁxed grid. Teams may either draw the graphs manually (manual category), or use their own customized tools (automatic category). Remote participation will be possible for both the manual and the automatic category. The live challenge will take place during the conference. To solve the instances and submit your solutions, you will be provided with a dedicated tool: https://graphdrawingcontest.appspot.com/tool.jsp Note that the target function changed slightly compared to last year, but the tool has not been updated yet for the new function. Opera Network The data represents a collection of opera performances that took place across Europe between 1775 and 1833. The data was extracted from the RISM database (https://opac.rism.info/main-menu-/kachelmenu/data) and was offered by Frans Wiering - professor of Utrecht University studing Musicology. There are several possibilities on how a network can be extracted from this data. We leave it to the participants to decide how and whether to model this data set as a network. 2. Aesthetic Experience Network The data set represents 8 networks that model an aesthetic experience of the viewers when observing artworks. The analyzed artworks are 8 paintings by Klee, Kandinsky, Mortensen, Miro and Winter. Each of the 14 nodes represents one of the two polarities of an aesthetic effect, and the edges are weighted by conditional dependence relations among aesthetic effects. In both cases, you may visualize the graph in any way you like. Submissions will be judged on a list of criteria that includes, but is not limited to, readability, aesthetics, novelty, and design quality. The weighting of the criteria might be different for the two graphs. Submissions will be handled through EasyChair. Call for Posters EG EuroVis 2022

Dear colleagues, we invite you to submit your research as a poster to EG EuroVis 2022! This year, EuroVis will be held June 13-17, 2022 in Rome, Italy. The posters track is specifically intended to present late-breaking results, work in progress, follow-up extensions, application case studies, or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers and engage in stimulating discussions. Submission Instructions We solicit poster submissions in the form of a sketch (i.e., an extended abstract of at most 2 pages in the EuroVis poster format, with an additional page allowed for references only). We strongly encourage the submission of additional materials. For example, you can submit an additional PDF (without any page limit) that contains a number of example results, screenshots, an interaction sequence, etc. The poster draft can also be added as additional material (but is not mandatory for the submission). Finally, submissions can also include supplementary material such as videos or executable programs. In particular for interactive tools/approaches, a digital video is essential and thus strongly encouraged to allow the reviewers to assess the interactive aspects. Poster sketches are to be submitted using the Poster sketches are submitted using the Precision Conference System (PCS)<https://new.precisionconference.com/>, according to the instructions in the submission guidelines section. Please note you shall select Eurographics as Society. Any accepted posters are required to have at least one (paid) registered author to attend and present the poster at the conference. Both a PDF version of the poster and the extended abstract will be included on the conference USB stick and also in the EG digital library with a DOI. The material in a poster/sketch can later be reused by the original authors for a more extensive publication (e.g., a full paper) with more detailed content and mature results, without being considered self-plagiarism. ****************************************************************************** Call for Papers – Map-based Interfaces and Interactions (MAPII 2022)  AVI 2022 Workshop   07 June 2022 – Rome, Italy More info: http://avcd.aalto.fi/mapii2022/ ****************************************************************************** ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Maps and map-like visualizations are increasingly being used as the basis for many types of interactive tools and applications. This workshop aims to bring together research on such map-based interfaces which is currently dispersed through different publication venues and disciplines. This workshop will act as a common space for sharing map-related research expertise coming from the fields of visualization, user interface design and interaction design. This workshop is part of the International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI 2022), and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION We invite the participation of researchers, designers, developers and practitioners from a diverse range of backgrounds concerned with the design, development, evaluation and deployment of map-based interactive visualizations, applications, tools and services. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a position paper describing their contributions to the field of the workshop and highlight their specific interests in the workshop topics. Numbers permitting, the workshop will also be open to other participants without an accepted position paper. This workshop aims to include a wide range of topics related to map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions, including but not limited to: – Theoretical foundations of map design. – Principles and practice of design of maps and map-like visualizations. – Design of map-based user interfaces and interactions. – Evaluation and user studies of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions in areas such as geographic information systems, epidemiology and healthcare, climate and environment, sustainability, education, social sciences and humanities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE This full day workshop will be interactive and informal. It will combine short presentations of accepted position papers with periods of discussions, aimed at generating ideas for future research directions. The workshop will also include a hands-on activity, during which the participants will be invited to sketch designs for a map-based interactive mobile application in small groups. The designs will then be shared and discussed in the workshop. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will however be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. SUBMISSIONS Position papers should be of maximum 6 pages, and prepared according to the ACM proceedings format (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) Submissions should be made through Easychair (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mapii2022) The workshop programme committee will review the submitted position papers, and select 10-15 papers for presentation at the workshop based on their quality and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted position papers will be published in the workshop proceedings, and will be made available through the workshop website. The workshop will include a discussion on publication of the extended versions of the position papers, for instance, in the form of a special issue of a journal or an edited book. This program is a great networking opportunity for both mentees and mentors to learn both about each other and the VR field in general! How do I participate? Interested individuals can opt-in to the Mentorship Program after registering for the 2022 IEEE VR conference. Mentors and mentees will be matched by the program organizers based on different levels of IEEE VR experience and research interests and will be put in contact before the conference begins. A sign-up form will be shared with *all registered attendees* of the IEEE VR 2022 conference. Interested participants should complete this form by *March 10, 2022*. This deadline is to give time for the committee to match mentors and mentees before the conference begins. What is involved in this program? Mentors and mentees are expected to participate in several activities together throughout the conference. Some suggested activities include: - Attending a paper session together and discussing afterwards - Meeting during coffee breaks/meals to discuss research and/or general career guidance We ask that the mentors also introduce their mentee(s) to at least *one (1) colleague* that is attending the conference. Preferably, this colleague will be someone at an institution that is different from the mentee’s so as to encourage further networking. Participants will also be asked to complete a *closing survey* providing feedback on the program after the conference.
