This workshop aims to bring together research on such map-based interfaces which is currently dispersed through different publication venues and disciplines. This workshop will act as a common space for sharing map-related research expertise coming from the fields of visualization, user interface design and interaction design. This workshop is part of the International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI 2022), and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION We invite the participation of researchers, designers, developers and practitioners from a diverse range of backgrounds concerned with the design, development, evaluation and deployment of map-based interactive visualizations, applications, tools and services. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a position paper describing their contributions to the field of the workshop and highlight their specific interests in the workshop topics. Numbers permitting, the workshop will also be open to other participants without an accepted position paper. This workshop aims to include a wide range of topics related to map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions, including but not limited to: – Theoretical foundations of map design. – Principles and practice of design of maps and map-like visualizations. – Design of map-based user interfaces and interactions. – Evaluation and user studies of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions in areas such as geographic information systems, epidemiology and healthcare, climate and environment, sustainability, education, social sciences and humanities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE This full day workshop will be interactive and informal. It will combine short presentations of accepted position papers with periods of discussions, aimed at generating ideas for future research directions. The workshop will also include a hands-on activity, during which the participants will be invited to sketch designs for a map-based interactive mobile application in small groups. The designs will then be shared and discussed in the workshop. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will however be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. SUBMISSIONS Position papers should be of maximum 6 pages, and prepared according to the ACM proceedings format (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) Submissions should be made through Easychair (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mapii2022) The workshop programme committee will review the submitted position papers, and select 10-15 papers for presentation at the workshop based on their quality and relevance to the workshop topics. The workshop will include a discussion on publication of the extended versions of the position papers, for instance, in the form of a special issue of a journal or an edited book. Please find the updated CfP below and on the webpage https://woiv.gitlab.io Cheers, Tom ----- # WOIV'22: 6th International Workshop on In Situ Visualization * Held in conjunction with ISC 2022 * Hamburg, Germany, June 2, 2022 ## Scope Large-scale HPC simulations with their inherent I/O bottleneck have made in situ visualization an essential approach for data analysis, although the idea of in situ visualization dates back to the golden era of coprocessing in the 1990s. In situ coupling of analysis and visualization to a live simulation circumvents writing raw data to disk for post-mortem analysis – an approach that is already inefficient for today’s very large simulation codes. Instead, with in situ visualization, data abstracts are generated that provide a much higher level of expressiveness per byte. Therefore, more details can be computed and stored for later analysis, providing more insight than traditional methods. We encourage contributed talks on methods and workflows that have been used for large-scale parallel visualization, with a particular focus on the in situ case. Presentations on codes that closely couple numerical methods and visualization are particularly welcome. Speakers should detail if and how the application drove abstractions or other kinds of data reductions and how these interacted with the expressiveness and flexibility of the visualization for exploratory analysis. Of particular interest to WOIV and its attendees are recent developments for in situ libraries and software. WOIV is an excellent place to connect providers of in situ solutions with potential customers. For the submissions we are not only looking for success stories, but are also particularly interested in those experiments that started with a certain goal or idea in mind, but later got shattered by reality or insufficient hardware/software. Areas of interest for WOIV include, but are not limited to: * Techniques and paradigms for in situ visualization. * Algorithms relevant to in situ visualization. These could include algorithms empowered by in situ visualization or algorithms that overcome limitations of in situ visualization. * Systems and software implementing in situ visualization. These include both general purpose and bespoke implementations. This also includes updates to existing software as well as new software. * Workflow management. * Use of in situ visualization for application science or other examples of using in situ visualization. * Performance studies of in situ systems. Comparisons between in situ systems or techniques or comparisons between in situ and alternatives (such as post hoc) are particularly encouraged. * The impact of hardware changes on in situ visualization. * The online visualization of experimental data. * Reports of in situ visualization failures. * Emerging issues with in situ visualization. ## Submissions We accept submissions of short papers (6 to 8 pages), full papers (10 to 12 pages) and lightning presentations (2 to 4 pages) in Springer single column LNCS style. SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue on Parameterized and Approximation Algorithms in Graph Drawing of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA) Dear Colleagues, It is a great pleasure to invite you to submit a paper to the Special Issue of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA) on "Parameterized and Approximation Algorithms in Graph Drawing". In the course of a few decades, the fields of parameterized complexity and approximation algorithms have emerged as distinguished research areas providing an impressive collection of broadly usable methodologies and remarkable theoretical and practical contributions. These branches of complexity theory provide a framework of powerful techniques that allow us to tackle hard (often NP-hard) problems, by either considering restricted graph classes or by seeking solutions "close" to the optimal ones. Moreover, in recent years, the research efforts in these two fields have converged into the study of the unified notion of parameterized approximation algorithms. This includes, but is not limited to, theoretical and combinatorial aspects that arise at the interface of graph drawing with computational and discrete geometry, combinatorial optimization, visual computing, VLSI and computer-aided design, computer graphics, and information visualization. The range of topics includes: - fixed-parameter tractable and approximation algorithms - (parameterized) inapproximability - W[k]-hardness - parameterized approximations - (lossy) kernelization - fine-grained complexity of approximations - subexponential-time approximations Other topics that are not listed but that might be of interest for the study of parameterized and approximation algorithms in graph drawing will also be evaluated. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we welcome contributions dealing with techniques and data structures to obtain efficient parameterized and approximation algorithms to tackle graph-visualization problems as well as implementations, experimental evaluations, and algorithm engineering issues of approximation, parameterized, and kernelization algorithms that emerge in practice. Paper Submission ================ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance concerned with parameterized and approximation algorithms in graph drawing and network visualization until February 28, 2022. We aim for a fast reviewing process in order to have this special issue available at the end of 2022. Papers should be submitted to the editors of the special issue in PDF format. All communications between the editors, authors, and reviewers will be done by email unless otherwise requested by the author or reviewer. All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (http://jgaa.info/authors.jsp) The default margins and fonts must not be modified. To achieve this, it is necessary to draw upon our current understanding of gaze-behavior across various and related fields, from vision and cognition to visualization. You are eligible if you are 18 or more and a writer, literary critic, or involved with production of written stories in any other ways. I would like to invite you to participate in a user study about the effectiveness of data visualization and interaction techniques on different tasks, such as filtering data, sorting data, and determining ranges. The techniques used in this study were designed for specific tasks, but we are investigating what effects these techniques have on other tasks as well. Understanding the effects of these techniques on other tasks will allow us to better understand the advantages or disadvantages in using those techniques when designing a new interactive visualization that supports a variety of tasks. We anticipate your participation taking 1 – 2 hours of your time. Once you have completed the study, you will be compensated with a $15 electronic Amazon gift card.
