Sorry if you have received multiple copies of this email ======================================================================= Call for Papers VISSOFT 2018 6th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization September 24-25, 2018 - Madrid, Spain http://vissoft18.etsii.urjc.es ======================================================================= Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools. VISSOFT topics of interest include: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data. * Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging. * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools with development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualizations * Industrial experience with using software visualization * Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning. We solicit papers that present original, unpublished research results. Papers will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tools track. All accepted submissions will appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library. == Technical papers == A technical paper contribution must describe an in-depth and mature research result relevant to software visualization. The content of a technical paper can be at a maximum 10 pages long (including all figures, tables, and appendices). However, the 10 page limit does not include the bibliography, which is not limited in length. The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. Authors who wish to submit a video can submit the video together with their paper if the size of the video is smaller than 50 MB, otherwise a URL to the video should be provided. Authors will be given the opportunity to provide a response to reviewer requests for clarifications before a final decision is made. Positively evaluated artifacts will be reflected in the paper publication, presentation, and be formally announced during the conference. A paper with an accepted artifact will have five extra minutes of presentation which can be used to present the artifact. The authors will also be invited to demo the artifact during the interactive informal demo session organized for the tool demo track. Reminder: Position papers are due March 9 AVI 2018 Workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization https://sites.google.com/view/multimodalvis/ May 29, 2018 Workshop Overview Multimodal interaction offers many potential benefits for data visualization to help people stay in the flow of their visual analysis and presentation. Often, the strengths of one interaction modality can offset weaknesses of another. However, existing visualization tools and interaction techniques have mostly explored a single input modality such as mouse, touch, pen, or more recently, natural language and speech. Recent interest in deploying data visualizations on diverse display hardware including mobile, AR/VR, and large displays create an urgent need to develop natural and fluid interaction techniques that can work in these contexts. Multimodal interaction offers strong promise for such situations, but its unique challenges for data visualization have yet to be deeply investigated. This workshop will bring together researchers with expertise in visualization, interaction design, and natural user interfaces. We aim to build a community of multimodal visualization researchers, explore synergies and challenges in our research, and establish an agenda for research on multimodal interactions for visualization. Use-Inspired Basic Research in Immersive Analytics https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/6416/use-inspired-immersive-ana… Submission deadline: May 18 2018 About this Research Topic: Immersive analytics (IA) investigates how new interaction and display technologies can be used to support analytical reasoning and decision making. Here immersion is regarded as an objective measure of the quality of the system’s technology, a measure of the extent to which the system presents a vivid environment, be it high-fidelity rendering or not, tracked or not, and stereoscopic or not. As a result, large high-resolution displays and the entire spectrum of mixed reality (MR) and ubiquitous computing all introduce opportunities to facilitate analytical reasoning and thus fall into the immersive analytics paradigm. This Research Topic is dedicated to "use-inspired basic research in immersive analytics" where a real-world problem shapes the design and studies. We encourage the discussions on intriguing issues of persuasive power of communications utilizing immersive display technologies, understanding the multifarious symbiosis relationships between humans and computing, and how best display and interaction can be used not only as a mechanism to conceive and communicate reality or how a set of visual variables can be encoded, but a means for influence, a way to persuade viewers to share that reality or at least to act in accordance with it. The consequences for design will be more powerful if immersive analytics can alter human assessments of and actions on their data. We are also interested in the building blocks of thought and crucial insights to be gained from the underlying structure of mental activities: the brain’s operations, which is perhaps the great remaining mysteries of human-computer integrated analytical reasoning. We like to explore how visual aids can link seemingly unrelated actions and events and how embodiment and new metaphors shape our minds and thinking, inspired by real-world uses. Copyright of the work will be held by the authors, which means that the 2 page extended abstract will not be regarded as a previous publication when submitting a longer version of the paper to a journal or conference. ========================================================= ABSTRACT PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS Abstracts should be 2 pages in length and should follow preparation instructions found at: http://www.siggraph.org/learn/instructions-authors. To prepare the content of the PDF file, SIGGRAPH encourages authors to use LaTeX. When generating the PDF file, please make sure that the fonts are embedded in the PDF file. This will ensure that reviewers can view the paper without problems. The submitted abstracts do not have to be anonymized for peer review. In addition to the extended abstract, you will be asked to submit either a video or a demo description with a video as stated below. VIDEO PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS The video should depict your technology in action and we encourage researchers to explain in the video a) the motivation for their work, b) the specific problem being addressed, and c) the demonstrated solution to the problem. Note that the video should be self-explaining, no in-person explanation of the videos should be necessary at the conference. This should either include an audio track or subtitles. You should make sure that background audio is free from copyright or that you are licensed to use it. The video should not include a title slide with the title of the work, authors, affiliations, etc. at the start of the video. We will add this to all videos in a consistent style. A submitted video should have a maximum length of 5 minutes and should not be larger than 100 MB. We recommend using MP4 format with H.264 codec and a resolution of 1280 x 720 px, at 24 to 30 frames/s. Most video production systems can encode in this format and most video applications are able to play it. If you use a different codec, you risk that reviewers might not be able to view the video clip and you will need to re-encode the video clip for the conference proceeding USB. The video should play in the VLC media player version 2.2.6 (freely available at http://www.videolan.org/vlc) without additional software, codecs or settings. The reasons why stories have been told are manifold: to entertain, to transfer knowledge between generations, to keep cultural heritage, or to warn others of dangers. With the emergence of the digitalization of media many new possibilities to tell stories emerged in serious and non-entertainment contexts. A very simple example is the idea of serious gaming - thus digital games without primarily an entertainment purpose. Within this handbook, we generalize the approach of serious games, on other genres of digital storytelling, and call for handbook typical contributions which introduce "serious storytelling: storytelling with a purpose beyond entertainment" as new approach. We seek for handbook alike contributions, reviews of existing application areas, established theories and methods, fundamental concepts, ground breaking research results in a transdisciplinary approach. The handbook shall range across domains, and illustrate storytelling outside an entertainment context in e.g. data science, artificial intelligence, well-being and health, medicine, psychology, education, ethical problem solving, eLeadership, and business/management, robotics, storytelling in deep learning and big data, qualitative journalism, serious games, storytelling in simulations, HCI research and storytelling, VR/AR training, user-experience studies, and online communication. As it's a handbook, contributions not essentially need to be new, we also seek for proofed concepts, methods, existing projects, and ideas that contribute to a handbook type of book. We would like to focus on shaping a NOVEL research direction, and define Digital Serious Storytelling as a new research pathway. Therefore, we are seeking for establishing theory. As we would like to have a tightly controlled editing process, we will mix authors of different contributions as well as we will step into the chapter authoring processes as it is required to get a red line through the book. We would not like to have an edited book consisting of a set of loosely connected chapters. We want to create a reference book, which will have impact, and act as teaching reference.
