In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 11th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '18) will be held on 13-15 August 2018, in Växjö, Sweden. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of an SCI-indexed journal. In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: = Cognitive aspects of visual information comprehension = Empirical studies of novel visual metaphors = Visual interaction through multimodality = Visual approaches for knowledge discovery = Computational aesthetics = Visual and immersive analytics = Graph drawing and (multivariate) network visualization = Information visualization = Graphical user interface design = Aesthetics in visual communication = Influence of visual arts and design = Visual modeling languages and UML = Visual communication metaphors = Visual programming languages = Visualization on mobile devices = Visualization in virtual, mixed, and augmented reality = Applications like SoftVis, BioVis, GeoVis, ... = Sketching = Human-computer interaction 2. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI?018 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of an SCI-indexed journal. In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed). Research papers and experience reports of up to eight (8), short papers of up to four (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2018. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '18 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. Workshop organizers will be expected to set up an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, and practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audiences to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '18. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '18 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2018) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '18 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. In this case, the special session will be canceled. 5. A full time postdoctoral position in Data Visualization area is available in The National Science & Technology Institute for Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) at the Federal University of Bahia, in Salvador, Brazil. We are looking for outstanding candidates holding a PhD in Computer Science/Engineering or related fields with a strong Computer Science/Engineering background. Excellent knowledge in the research areas of Information Visualization and Visual Analytics is a strong advantage. Duties will involve: · Research, develop and implement visualization methods to support analysis of social media data (temporal, numerical, categorical, text, networks…) · Writing for highly ranked journals and top tier conferences · Possibly co-advising undergraduate and graduate students Ideal start date is early March 2018. EuroVA 2018 Workshop http://www.eurova.org EuroVA 2018 is the ninth international EuroVis Workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place as a *one-day workshop* on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Brno, Czech Republic. Visual Analytics is a problem-solving and sense-making technology that integrates analytical computations, visual representations, and interaction. It includes the analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, ambiguous, conflicting, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, and inferring insight. Visual Analytics aims at a synergistic collaboration of humans and computers mediated through interactive visual interfaces. As such, Visual Analytics is an interdisciplinary field of research, including aspects of visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2018 is the best place to present and discuss ideas of new methods and theories, interesting applications, designs, and studies of the use of Visual Analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a range of paper types, including technique, system, application, evaluation and theory papers in the area of Visual Analytics. Keynote Speakers We are pleased to announce that our distinguished guests Dr. Gennady Andrienko and Dr. Natalia Andrienko will be giving this year’s EuroVA keynote. Gennady and Natalia will be talking about “Sports Visual Analytics“. Gennady and Natalia are lead scientists responsible for the visual analytics research at Fraunhofer IAIS and full professors (part-time) at City University London. They co-authored monographs “Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data” (Springer, 2006) and “Visual Analytics of Movement” (Springer, 2013), more than 80 peer-reviewed journal papers, 25 book chapters, and about 100 conference papers. [Apologies for multiple copies] Special issue on human centric visual analytics: Journal of Behaviour & Information Technology (2016 Impact Factor: 1.388) Currently, many visual analytics products and tools have been developed. However, in developing those tools and products, much attention has been paid on mining data patterns and making the hidden information visible to users. Relatively less attention has been paid on how this information should be presented for sense making decision making. This imbalance between human and computer has resulted in the lack of theories and guidelines for system design and evaluation and prevented systems and tools from being more useful in practice. To foster an incentive to address the issue and improve the situation, this specie issue targets on new visualization theories, novel design principles, analytics techniques and evaluation methodologies that are to address issues surrounding human-centric visual analytics. The primary objective is to foster focused attention in this emerging area and to serve as forum for researchers and professionals all over the world to exchange and discuss the latest advances. To be precise, the aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of human-centric visual analytics. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under review by any other journals or conferences. Papers to be submitted to this special issue must focus on the human side of visual analytics. Call For Participation AVI 2018 Workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization https://sites.google.com/view/multimodalvis/ May 29, 2018 Workshop Overview Multimodal interaction offers many potential benefits for data visualization to help people stay in the flow of their visual analysis and presentation. Often, the strengths of one interaction modality can offset weaknesses of another. However, existing visualization tools and interaction techniques have mostly explored a single input modality such as mouse, touch, pen, or more recently, natural language and speech. Recent interest in deploying data visualizations on diverse display hardware including mobile, AR/VR, and large displays create an urgent need to develop natural and fluid interaction techniques that can work in these contexts. Multimodal interaction offers strong promise for such situations, but its unique challenges for data visualization have yet to be deeply investigated. This workshop will bring together researchers with expertise in visualization, interaction design, and natural user interfaces. We aim to build a community of multimodal visualization researchers, explore synergies and challenges in our research, and establish an agenda for research on multimodal interactions for visualization. Also, a new wave of information is underway: low-cost 3D scanners, 3D printers, and powerful modeling software have made 3D models appeal to an increasing audience. Repositories of 3D objects are rapidly growing in both number and size. Yet, the task of exploring such large 3D repositories and retrieving the models of interest remains a challenging problem. Indeed, traditional information access techniques have been shown inadequate to deal with 3D content. Therefore, it is crucial to develop algorithms for content-based searching of 3D object collections; creating compact and accurate descriptors for 3D objects; creating efficient storage structures for databases of 3D objects; investigating theoretical aspects of practical importance, such as the definition of the similarity concept; interfaces for content-based 3D object search; visualization techniques for 3D search results; real time aspects of techniques and algorithms; new challenges such as faceted 3D browsing, social search, and navigation of hybrid datasets. The complex yet concrete problems above are drawing increasing attention from the research community. The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction who work on or are interested in 3D object retrieval search and exploration, to present state-of-the-art work in the field or learn about it and participate in discussions. Dear Colleagues, You are kindly invited to contribute to the sixth EuroVis Workshop on Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation (EuroRVVV<http://www.eurorvvv.org/>) to be held in conjunction with EuroVis 2018<http://www.eurovis2018.org/> in Brno, Czech Republic, on June 4th, 2018. The purpose of this workshop is to develop a common sense of good reproducibility, verification, and validation practices in our community. Workshop papers will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process by an international program committee. They will be electronically archived in the Eurographics Digital Library and are fully citable publications. Submissions for the EuroRVVV track should be in a short paper format, 4 pages (at most), excluding references, and 5 pages (at most), in total. They will be orally presented at the workshop. EuroRVVV 2018 will be held in Brno, Czech Republic, on June 4th, 2018, as part of EuroVis 2018. 2018 3rd Biennial Broadening Participation in Visualization (BPViz) Workshop Call for Participation Extended to February 16, 2018 Workshop Website: http://bpviz.org June 13 -14, 2018 Co-located at Purdue University and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Questions? Vetria Byrd (vlbyrd(a)purdue.edu<mailto:vlbyrd@purdue.edu>) DETAILS: The purpose of the workshop is to provide hands-on experience visualizing data, and foster opportunities for networking and mentoring between underrepresented groups and experts in the field of visualization. The 2018 CRA-W/CDC CADENS two-day Discipline Specific Workshop aims to broaden participation of women and members of underrepresented groups in the field of data visualization. The two-day workshop will include demos, a poster presentation by participants, panel presentation by visualization professionals, keynote speakers, networking, mentoring activities and scholarly exchange of ideas. The workshop, co-located at Purdue University and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and scheduled for June 13-14, 2018, will include a trip to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Limited travel awards are available. For full consideration for travel awards, applications must be received by 5:00 PM (EST), Friday, February 16, 2018. We are regrettably restricted to reimbursing/providing travel support to only U.S. Citizens. We recognize this is a serious constraint, but it is a federal regulation on the funding. To address interest from a larger community to participate, BPViz'18 Organizers are seeking external sponsorship for potential workshop participants who are not eligible for funding described above. If you are a non-US Citizen and would like to be considered for travel and participant support to attend the workshop you are encouraged to apply. You should indicate your citizenship and indicate you are interested in travel support, based availability of funding, in your online application. There is no guarantee of sponsorship; however, if the sponsorship becomes available, and there are slots available you will be considered for travel support. For full consideration, all application materials must be received by 5:00 PM (EST) Friday, February 16, 2018. Persons with their own travel funds wishing to participate in the workshop are encouraged to attend the conference and workshop. All persons with an interest in data visualization should apply.
