A full time postdoctoral position in Data Visualization area is available in The National Science & Technology Institute for Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) at the Federal University of Bahia, in Salvador, Brazil. We are looking for outstanding candidates holding a PhD in Computer Science/Engineering or related fields with a strong Computer Science/Engineering background. Excellent knowledge in the research areas of Information Visualization and Visual Analytics is a strong advantage. Duties will involve: · Research, develop and implement visualization methods to support analysis of social media data (temporal, numerical, categorical, text, networks…) · Writing for highly ranked journals and top tier conferences · Possibly co-advising undergraduate and graduate students Ideal start date is early March 2018. EuroVA 2018 Workshop http://www.eurova.org EuroVA 2018 is the ninth international EuroVis Workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place as a *one-day workshop* on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Brno, Czech Republic. Visual Analytics is a problem-solving and sense-making technology that integrates analytical computations, visual representations, and interaction. It includes the analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, ambiguous, conflicting, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, and inferring insight. Visual Analytics aims at a synergistic collaboration of humans and computers mediated through interactive visual interfaces. As such, Visual Analytics is an interdisciplinary field of research, including aspects of visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2018 is the best place to present and discuss ideas of new methods and theories, interesting applications, designs, and studies of the use of Visual Analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a range of paper types, including technique, system, application, evaluation and theory papers in the area of Visual Analytics. Keynote Speakers We are pleased to announce that our distinguished guests Dr. Gennady Andrienko and Dr. Natalia Andrienko will be giving this year’s EuroVA keynote. Gennady and Natalia will be talking about “Sports Visual Analytics“. Gennady and Natalia are lead scientists responsible for the visual analytics research at Fraunhofer IAIS and full professors (part-time) at City University London. They co-authored monographs “Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data” (Springer, 2006) and “Visual Analytics of Movement” (Springer, 2013), more than 80 peer-reviewed journal papers, 25 book chapters, and about 100 conference papers. [Apologies for multiple copies] Special issue on human centric visual analytics: Journal of Behaviour & Information Technology (2016 Impact Factor: 1.388) Currently, many visual analytics products and tools have been developed. However, in developing those tools and products, much attention has been paid on mining data patterns and making the hidden information visible to users. Relatively less attention has been paid on how this information should be presented for sense making decision making. This imbalance between human and computer has resulted in the lack of theories and guidelines for system design and evaluation and prevented systems and tools from being more useful in practice. To foster an incentive to address the issue and improve the situation, this specie issue targets on new visualization theories, novel design principles, analytics techniques and evaluation methodologies that are to address issues surrounding human-centric visual analytics. The primary objective is to foster focused attention in this emerging area and to serve as forum for researchers and professionals all over the world to exchange and discuss the latest advances. To be precise, the aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of human-centric visual analytics. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under review by any other journals or conferences. Papers to be submitted to this special issue must focus on the human side of visual analytics. Call For Participation AVI 2018 Workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization https://sites.google.com/view/multimodalvis/ May 29, 2018 Workshop Overview Multimodal interaction offers many potential benefits for data visualization to help people stay in the flow of their visual analysis and presentation. Often, the strengths of one interaction modality can offset weaknesses of another. However, existing visualization tools and interaction techniques have mostly explored a single input modality such as mouse, touch, pen, or more recently, natural language and speech. Recent interest in deploying data visualizations on diverse display hardware including mobile, AR/VR, and large displays create an urgent need to develop natural and fluid interaction techniques that can work in these contexts. Multimodal interaction offers strong promise for such situations, but its unique challenges for data visualization have yet to be deeply investigated. This workshop will bring together researchers with expertise in visualization, interaction design, and natural user interfaces. We aim to build a community of multimodal visualization researchers, explore synergies and challenges in our research, and establish an agenda for research on multimodal interactions for visualization. Also, a new wave of information is underway: low-cost 3D scanners, 3D printers, and powerful modeling software have made 3D models appeal to an increasing audience. Repositories of 3D objects are rapidly growing in both number and size. Yet, the task of exploring such large 3D repositories and retrieving the models of interest remains a challenging problem. Indeed, traditional information access techniques have been shown inadequate to deal with 3D content. Therefore, it is crucial to develop algorithms for content-based searching of 3D object collections; creating compact and accurate descriptors for 3D objects; creating efficient storage structures for databases of 3D objects; investigating theoretical aspects of practical importance, such as the definition of the similarity concept; interfaces for content-based 3D object search; visualization techniques for 3D search results; real time aspects of techniques and algorithms; new challenges such as faceted 3D browsing, social search, and navigation of hybrid datasets. The complex yet concrete problems above are drawing increasing attention from the research community. The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction who work on or are interested in 3D object retrieval search and exploration, to present state-of-the-art work in the field or learn about it and participate in discussions. The 2018 CRA-W/CDC CADENS two-day Discipline Specific Workshop aims to broaden participation of women and members of underrepresented groups in the field of data visualization. The two-day workshop will include demos, a poster presentation by participants, panel presentation by visualization professionals, keynote speakers, networking, mentoring activities and scholarly exchange of ideas. The workshop, co-located at Purdue University and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and scheduled for June 13-14, 2018, will include a trip to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. GD 2018 will take place September 26-28, 2018 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. PAPERS ------------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. All papers in all tracks will undergo single-blind reviewing. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects --------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric graph theory * Geometric computing * Planarity and topological graph theory * Optimization on graphs Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data * Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems * Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms * Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces * Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction * Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the poster session. Short papers ----------------- In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ------------------------- All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty or mathptmx.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. The length of regular papers is limited to 12 pages (excluding references), while the length of short papers is limited to 6 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. Authors must submit the complete paper (including the appendix) by the deadline. Minor updates will be allowed for 2 days following the deadline. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd18 POSTERS -------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. CONTEST -------------- Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site at http://graphdrawing.de/contest2018/contest.html PUBLICATION -------------------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. Twelve pages (excluding references) will be allocated for regular papers and six pages (excluding references) for short papers. The copyright to these proceedings will be held by Springer. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of different versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv ``replacements'') are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper/poster will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of the best paper in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). AWARDS ------------- For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD 2018 will give a Best Paper Award. In addition, to recognize the effort of participants to present their work and to prepare their posters in a clear and elegant way, there will be a Best Presentation Award and a Best Poster Award voted on by the GD 2018 attendees.
