This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. The **DATA Lab** focuses on research problems in data management, data mining and machine learning with particular emphasis on scalability of algorithms to large data. The **Visualization Lab** focuses on understanding human perception and cognition, as well as designing visualization and interaction techniques for exploring complex data. Our growing labs have **eight open and funded PhD positions** focused on data storytelling; analytic provenance; tree and graph/network visualization; scalable approaches for managing uncertain, inconsistent, distributed and network data; cybersecurity and defense geospatial network visualization; visualization for healthcare; multidimensional data visualization; and visualization perception and cognition. The project is situated in York’s Digital Creativity (DC) Labs (http://www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk <http://www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk/>), an impact-driven research centre that explores and develops new forms of digital creativity and interactive media experience. The post is funded by the EPSRC and is a collaborative project between the University of York, BBC R&D, The Open Data Institute, The Digital Catapult, City of York Council and BAFTA-winning immersive media producer Catherine Allen. The Perspective Media project investigates how personalized, interactive video stories (e.g. based on interactive documentary techniques or object-based media) can provide more accessible, informative and pleasurable ways for the public to engage with the increasing amounts of data that exist about them in modern society. As the successful candidate, you will be at the forefront of developments that exploit the power of storytelling for engagement and literacy with data, and the potential of data analytics to reveal new opportunities for storytelling. You will conduct user-centered research with media production partners, data providers and audience members to investigate: cutting-edge techniques for presenting data in personalised video stories and novel processes and tools for making interactive video content that is adaptive to viewer data. As the successful candidate, you will have a PhD and record of high-quality publications in Human-computer Interaction or a related field (e.g. Interaction Design, User-experience, Interactive Data Visualization, Interactive/Digital Media, Media Arts Technology, Computer Science), or equivalent experience. You will have the ability to apply user-centered research methods (e.g. workshops, observations, interviews) in the design, development and evaluation of human-computer interfaces or interactive media experiences. You will have the front-end software development skills needed to turn ideas into functional prototypes so that they can be evaluated with end users, preferably using web technologies (e.g. HTML5 and Javascript). You will also have: experience of conducting high-quality individual and collaborative research projects; excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience of presenting at conferences and engaging with non-academic audiences; the ability to work to tight deadlines in an interdisciplinary team including industry and other external partners; and flexibility to travel to partner sites in the UK for a small number of short research visits and to international conferences to disseminate results. Candidates with previous knowledge and experience of either interactive video/media experiences or techniques for engaging non-experts with data would be especially welcomed, but this is not essential. ** Further Details of the Project and Role ** The project’s methodology will be focussed around the iterative and user-centered design and development of prototype Perspective Media content with project partners and other stakeholders. These prototypes will range in fidelity from low-fi mock-ups created in initial design workshops to a final functional prototype that will be deployed and evaluated with a sizable public audience via the BBC’s high-profile Taster platform. You will work closely with the PI to lead the creation and evaluation of these prototypes, employing your user-research and organizational skills to facilitate and coordinate collaborative contributions from partners and stakeholders with expertize in media production and data provision, and a team of two film production interns under your supervision. You will also employ your front-end software development skills in the technical implementation of prototypes, working in close collaboration with other researchers and software engineers in the DC Labs who are developing back-end technologies for interactive video. This full-time post is available for 12 months from the 1st February 2018, or as soon as practical after this date. [Apologies for multiple copies] Special issue on human centric visual analytics: Journal of Behaviour & Information Technology (2016 Impact Factor: 1.388) Currently, many visual analytics products and tools have been developed. However, in developing those tools and products, much attention has been paid on mining data patterns and making the hidden information visible to users. Relatively less attention has been paid on how this information should be presented for sense making decision making. This imbalance between human and computer has resulted in the lack of theories and guidelines for system design and evaluation and prevented systems and tools from being more useful in practice. To foster an incentive to address the issue and improve the situation, this specie issue targets on new visualization theories, novel design principles, analytics techniques and evaluation methodologies that are to address issues surrounding human-centric visual analytics. The primary objective is to foster focused attention in this emerging area and to serve as forum for researchers and professionals all over the world to exchange and discuss the latest advances. To be precise, the aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of human-centric visual analytics. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under review by any other journals or conferences. Papers to be submitted to this special issue must focus on the human side of visual analytics. Dear everyone, We are advertising a fully funded PhD studentship with focus on Interactive Visualization of Heterogeneous Multi-Source Data at Newcastle University, UK. One of the most challenging and important tasks in data science today is to extract informative and valuable knowledge from the constantly increasing data deluge. There is a great need of efficient and usable analysis tools that support gaining of insight and address data analysis challenges. Data visualization utilize methods from HCI, computer graphics, data mining and other data science areas to support knowledge generation and bridge the gap between data and user. A major challenge in big data analysis is the integrative analysis of heterogeneous data that is gathered from multiple sources. These data may be of different types, collected at different levels of detail and from different application domains; and it is expected that the integrative analysis across datasets may lead to greater insight. Such data is common in areas such as climate and weather research, combining for instance temperature data, pollution levels and demographical data, or bio-medical domains where data as diverse as genome sequences and environmental data may need to be combined. Within this project you will develop and implement state-of-the-art visualization methods to support analysis of diverse multi-source data.
