EuroVA 2018 Workshop http://www.eurova.org EuroVA 2018 is the ninth international EuroVis Workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Brno, Czech Republic. Visual Analytics is a problem-solving and sense-making technology that integrates analytical computations, visual representations, and interaction. It includes the analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, ambiguous, conflicting, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, and inferring insight. Visual Analytics aims at a synergistic collaboration of humans and computers mediated through interactive visual interfaces. As such, Visual Analytics is an interdisciplinary field of research, including aspects of visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2018 is the best place to present and discuss ideas of new methods and theories, interesting applications, designs, and studies of the use of Visual Analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a range of paper types, including technique, system, application, evaluation and theory papers in the area of Visual Analytics. Call for Submissions The workshop seeks to attract innovative, fresh and creative ideas with a high potential of becoming significant contributions to the Visual Analytics community. We welcome research papers that introduce new Visual Analytics concepts, methods, or techniques, application papers that describe success stories of Visual Analytics in practice, and position papers expressing novel and potentially controversial viewpoints on Visual Analytics. Extended Deadline: 22 January 2018 ** CFP: Special Issue on Genetic Programming, Evolutionary Computation and Visualization ** Recent advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and visualization have shown a growing synergy between these fields. On the one hand, visualization can make GP/EC algorithms more transparent, through interactive parameter tuning and the graphical representation of experimental analyses [3,5]. On the other hand, GP/EC techniques can be deployed to efficiently guide user search in exploratory visualization systems [1,2,4]. This special issue aims to bring together latest work and new advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and Visualization (including its three subfields: information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics), to produce new insights on: - how to develop better visualization tools to support GP/EC, and - how to develop robust GP/EC algorithms to support visualization applications. You might consider applying or be able to distribute it to anyone who might be interested. We're particularly trying to court local applicants, but that is not a deal breaker. Libraries have long been places where people have explored new ways of interacting with information and data. The NCSU Libraries’ Code+Art program <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/projects/codeart> continues this tradition by bringing an aesthetic eye to the increasing role of data in our lives by combining creative and computational thinking in a library’s physical spaces. Code+Art provides the lens that focuses this residency program. Program Details The resident will produce a large-scale work of digital art or visualization. Creations could include generative art or dynamic, data-driven visualizations of high aesthetic quality. The data underlying the piece may or may not be literally interpretable, depending on the resident’s scholarly approach. To generate broader impact and a larger audience, the work will: - Be open source - Follow principles of responsive design - Follow principles of universal design - Be documented using principles of literate computing - Be broadly distributed to other libraries and learning spaces with similar visualization facilities Additionally, the work should be scholarly output that is citable and impactful. If additional technology skills are needed beyond what the student employee can provide, the residency stipend may be used to hire technical help. The residency includes a stipend of $20,000 that can be used to cover housing, travel, and other expenses incurred by the project. Support and Community Engagement The resident will work closely with NCSU Libraries staff, who will facilitate engagement with the NC State community and the broader scholarly community. The highly motivated, successful applicant is asked to suggest, develop, and answer a timely and relevant research question related to spatio-temporal knowledge discovery and knowledge construction using geovisual analytics displays (including spatialization). Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Master’s degree (by thesis) in a relevant area, e.g., Geography, Geographic Information Science, or Computer Science. You have an established background in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies for data collection and data analysis. The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Tampere invites applications for a fixed-term full-time postdoctoral researcher’s position for a period from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019. The research takes place in the project ”Machine learning for exploratory search over multiple data domains (EXCEED)”. The postdoctoral researcher will develop new well-performing, computationally efficient and scalable methods based on probabilistic modeling, data mining, and machine learning for exploratory search, and modeling and visualization of text data. The main data sources are large structured data of online conversations in different media. The postdoctoral researcher will participate in all parts of the research process including ideas development, methods development, data gathering, empirical testing, and publication in high-quality international venues. Other tasks of research staff are governed by University of Tampere's regulations on human resources, Section 3. A person appointed as a postdoctoral researcher must hold an appropriate doctoral degree in a field related to the research tasks (such as statistics, computer science, visual analytics, or a related field) and must be able to pursue scientific research independently as well as have the instructional skills needed in the post. It is also possible to start as a researcher if one has made good progress in PhD studies and has a sufficient track record. A strong track record of research and scientific publication in top venues is appreciated. Good programming skills are expected. It aims to promote theoretical, empirical, applied research on visualization and diagrammatic reasoning, especially, about sets (set-theoretical and grouped data). SetVR 2018 welcomes submissions of types: full papers (16 pages) and short papers (8 pages; at least 5 pages).
