Dear Colleagues, We are soliciting assistance with a research study on information visualization education. Details of the study are provided below. Thank you for your time and consideration, Paul Parsons, Vetria Byrd, and Camilo Vieira Purdue University Interest in information visualization (InfoVis) has been growing in recent years, leading to growth in InfoVis training in both academic and non-academic contexts. As a result, InfoVis pedagogy has become an important topic for research and discussion. Little scholarship has focused directly on InfoVis education, however, and research informing curriculum design is underdeveloped. This research study aims to identify InfoVis concepts that are both important and difficult to learn. The results from this study can be used to support the curriculum development process for InfoVis programs, and to inform educational research and pedagogical practices. We are inviting you to participate in this research because you are part of a community of InfoVis educators, researchers, and practitioners. We are specifically interested in your input based on your experience teaching, learning, and/or practicing InfoVis. Your participation in this study consists of three rounds of data collection that are explained below. Throughout the three rounds your identity will be kept anonymous to other respondents (though not to the researchers). That is, you will not directly interact with other respondents and you will not know who they are, nor they will be able to identify you. Only the researchers will be able to connect your identity with your responses. Please note that all data (with and without identifiers) will be kept permanently and will be stored in a hard drive by Dr. Vieira in a locked cabinet within his office at Purdue University. Each round is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Further, it is anticipated that there will be several weeks between each round to collate all responses, revise the instrument for the next iteration, and provide feedback to you. At the close of the third round, you will be offered the choice to receive a copy of the final report. The Delphi process provides an interactive communication structure between researchers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop themes, needs, and directions about a topic. This Delphi process will consist of three anonymous, iterative rounds as follows: Goal Round 1: To identify important and difficult concepts to learn in InfoVis education. Goal Round 2: To rank different levels of relevance and difficulty for each of the InfoVis concepts provided on a consolidated list. Goal Round 3: To revise the collective responses and gain consensus among the respondents. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project, nor are there any direct benefits to participants. ** CFP: Special Issue on Genetic Programming, Evolutionary Computation and Visualization ** Recent advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and visualization have shown a growing synergy between these fields. On the one hand, visualization can make GP/EC algorithms more transparent, through interactive parameter tuning and the graphical representation of experimental analyses [3,5]. On the other hand, GP/EC techniques can be deployed to efficiently guide user search in exploratory visualization systems [1,2,4]. This special issue aims to bring together latest work and new advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and Visualization (including its three subfields: information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics), to produce new insights on: - how to develop better visualization tools to support GP/EC, and - how to develop robust GP/EC algorithms to support visualization applications. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. The goal of the Diagrams 2018 Graduate Symposium is twofold. Firstly, the Symposium will provide senior graduate students and recent Masters and Doctoral graduates with the opportunity to present their research. Established researchers will provide feedback and comments on each of the presentations. TransImage aims in bringing together artists, theorists, scholars, scientists, historians and curators. Papers are invited from areas related to: Media Arts, Painting, Drawing, Curating, Installation, Film, Video, Photography, Data Visualization, Real-time Imaging, Design, Intelligent Systems and Image Science. The Data Visualization track focuses on questions such as: Where are the new frontiers for visualization? How can visualization become a cultural artifact and general skill? How to support people creating, accessing, learning, and understanding visualizations? How do data visualizations become interface to the data? The work must be original and not published elsewhere before. Accepted papers will be put online and get a DOI. High-rated submissions will get an invitation for an extended journal version. ==== PHD STUDENT IN COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH SPECIALIZATION IN VISUAL ANALYTICS ==== placed at Linnaeus University, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Technology – Växjö Campus, Sweden Application Deadline: November 1, 2017 ****Description**** The focus of this advertised PhD position and the corresponding research project is on visual analytics for engineering smarter system (http://bit.ly/2flR0ao) The research will be performed within the Linnaeus University Center on Data Intensive Sciences and Applications, DISA, funded by Linnaeus University for five years. Overall aim of this DISA subproject is to better understand and engineer complex cyber-physical systems. We will develop foundational visual analytics principles, techniques and tools for analyzing data and models in those systems. Thus, trust into the analysis results will be finally increased by making the analysis methods and resulting empirical models transparent for end users. In consequence, our users will be enabled to better predict the behavior of cyber-physical systems and to reconstruct the underlying models more efficiently when needed. Duties consist mainly of the following: • Graduate studies in the field of Visual Analytics, with a doctoral degree as the goal. The PhD thesis should be completed and defended within the official appointment duration of five years (4 years graduate studies, 1 year departmental tasks). • Research in the field Visual Analytics. The position is part of DISA and its subproject Visual Analytics for Engineering Smarter Systems. • Regularly present intermediate research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in conference proceedings and journals. • Close collaboration with the other project members in an interdisciplinary research environment as well as with domain experts. • At most 20% of the working time will be dedicated to teaching and other departmental tasks. Note that a PhD position in Sweden is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits and paid vacations. ****Qualifications**** Qualification requirements A person fulfils the general entry requirements. if he/she has comprised a completed undergraduate program of at least 240 credits, including 60 credits at advanced level, or the equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. Specific requirements are • approved courses of a minimum of 90 credits in the subject Computer and Information Science or the equivalent, and • an individual study project of a minimum of 15 credits in the subject Computer and Information Science, or the equivalent. Others The specific prerequisites for admission to PhD studies within the above-mentioned specialization are • a successfully finished Master’s thesis in a field related to Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, or Data Sciences; and • high proficiency in written and spoken English. ****Assessment criteria**** Excellent knowledge in the focused research areas of information visualization and visual analytics is a strong advantage. Good programming skills (Java, JavaScript / HTML5, WebGL/OpenGL) and a solid training in mathematics, data mining, or machine learning are highly preferred. Documented expertise and working experience within at least one of the following research and educational areas is a great advantage: • Visual analytics of Big Data • Visual analytics of streaming data • Multidimensional visualization techniques in combination with machine learning and/or data mining techniques (such as dimensionality reduction) • Evaluation of visualizations • Experiences in specific application domains and their visualization needs related to the DISA subproject, such as in systems engineering Because of the interdisciplinary character of the project and DISA, the candidate should be an enthusiastic person who is interested in making sense of large and complex data sets of various types as well as capable of working both independently and within a group. Teamwork experiences should be documented in the application. CALL FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART REPORTS All accepted STARs will be published in Computer Graphics Forum Important Upcoming Dates Submission of STAR sketch (two pages +references+bibliography): 13 October 2017 Invitation for full STAR submission: 3 November 2017 Submission of full STAR: 2 February 2018 EuroVis 2018 is the 20th annual scientific gathering on visualization jointly organized by the Eurographics Working Group on Data Visualization and the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee. EuroVis 2018 will be held in Brno, Czech Republic, from 4-8 June 2018. Like last year, all accepted EuroVis 2018 STAR reports will be published in Computer Graphics Forum. State-of-the-Art Reports (STARs) are intended to provide up-to-date and comprehensive surveys on topics of interest to the visualization research community. We encourage the submission of STARs on topics that have not yet been covered in any recent previous STAR or other survey. We welcome submissions that introduce emerging technologies, as well as proposals on more traditional visualization topics. We also welcome contributions from related disciplines and application areas demonstrating contributions to, or benefits from, the area of visualization including, but not limited to, visual computing, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, virtual reality, image processing, computer vision, psychology, geography, chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, data analysis, computational sciences, medicine, biology, economy, politology, etc. As part of the acceptance process into Computer Graphics Forum, STARs will undergo a multi-stage process. First, authors are asked to submit an initial sketch by 13 October 2017. A STAR sketch briefly describes the planned STAR by outlining the topic, discussing its relevance to the visualization community, providing the planned structure and outline of the STAR together with all key references, and short biographies of the authors. The length of a STAR sketch main text is limited to two pages. References and short biographies are considered supplementary pages and are not counted within the two page limit. Bibliographies are be limited to 200 words per author. The format of the sketch can be found at http://www.eurovis2018.org/ <http://www.eurovis2018.org/> STAR sketches will be reviewed by the STAR IPC and comments on suitability and relevance will be provided by 3 Nov 2016. Authors will then be required to submit a full STAR. Full STAR submissions will then undergo a single blind, double cycle review, similar to the one for regular papers submitted to Computer Graphics Forum, where three external experts on the respective topic will evaluate the STAR. We do not impose strict maximum lengths for submitted STARs. However, it is unusual for STARs to exceed 20 pages in CGF latex style including all images but excluding references. To summarize, survey papers are up to 20 pages (excluding references). There is no page limit for references and author biographies are not included in the final version of the paper. To demonstrate the relevant expertise needed to produce the proposed STAR, authors are required to submit the brief biographies of all authors as supplementary materials.
