ABOUT THE PROJECT Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) are important to understand biomolecular systems and materials. The aim of this project is therefore to apply and further develop suitable immersive analytics methodology and to create an integrated tool that allows to perform the analytics workflow interactively in the same environment, e.g. using augmented reality devices. The VAST Challenge is designed to help researchers understand how their software would be used in a novel analytic task and determine if their data transformations, visualizations, and interactions would be beneficial for particular analytic tasks. VAST Challenge problems provide researchers with realistic data sets and questions for evaluating their software, as well as an opportunity to advance the field by solving complex problems. This year's Challenge offers three diverse mini-challenges and a grand challenge that concern a sad state of affairs in a nature preserve, threats to flora and fauna, and the quest of a local graduate student to find the explanations. We welcome visualization innovations that address key issues in the problems presented; even if a mini-challenge is not completely solved. Postdoctoral Fellow - Augmented Reality for Decision Support * Are you a highly motivated PhD graduate? * Do you have a passion for developing novel interactive Augmented Reality (AR) applications? * A great opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and create productivity tools that have substantial industrial impacts! Future Science Platforms (FSPs) are a major new CSIRO initiative. FSPs are multi-year investments in frontier science that will reinvent and create new industries for Australia. Digiscape is the FSP that is creating next-generation decision tools to transform the agriculture and land management sector. To achieve this aim, Digiscape is bringing to bear cutting edge climate science; new sources of locally and remotely sensed data; informatics for agro-ecosystems; rigorous analysis of uncertainties; and innovation in both the ICT and social dimensions of systems integration. The successful candidate will join a cohort of early-career researchers and engineers who will combine their individual disciplinary contributions into mission-focussed R&D. Part of the Digiscape vision is that Augmented Reality technologies (such as Microsoft HoloLens) will play a key role in supporting individual and team decision making, both in the field and in the office. In the aquaculture domain these tools will assist operators on the ground and/or in the office to visualise pond conditions and access short-term pond predictions across multiple ponds. They will be a primary method for accessing the data management and modelling frameworks developed in related projects. Your success in this role will be underpinned by your record of science innovation and creativity, plus your ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations. The successful applicant will implement and evaluate prototype systems, while making use of the Advanced Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (VR) facilities in the Data61 Immersive Environments Lab in Canberra. Good afternoon, Sorry if you have received multiple copies of this email. *Tulip 5.0 is available* Tulip is an information visualization framework dedicated to the analysis and visualization of relational data (Visual Analytics). Based on more than 16 years of research and development, Tulip is built on a suite of tools and techniques, that can be used to address a large variety of domain-specific problems. With Tulip, we aim to provide Python and/or C++ developers a complete library, supporting the design of interactive information visualization applications for relational data, that can be customized to address a wide range of visualization problems. Tulip enables the development of algorithms, visual encodings, interaction techniques, data models, and domain-specific visualizations. The Python programming layer wraps up Tulip as an ideal tool for fast prototyping and treatment automation, allowing to focus on problem solving, and as a great system for teaching purposes at all education levels. Tulip 5 offers new features, mainly: * a *new Python IDE* in a dedicated window allowing the coding/execution of modules, plugins or Python scripts (the older Python script view is not available any more), * numerous *import plugins* dedicated to the graph generation of known social network models, * a *BibTEX* file (.bib) import plugin, * a *CSV* export plugin. * the integration of the "*Material design icons*" (https://materialdesignicons.com[1]) to be used as node glyphs, * the management of the *Message log window and a new feature to log every call to a plugin and get output information from some plugins (e.g., modularity value from the Louvain metric algorithm)*, * Improved management of the *Drawing defaults* preferences, * Addition of a *status bar* and more documentation through tooltips. *Graph API* has been extended; new methods allowing easy multi-threaded iteration over graph nodes or edges and multi-threaded computation of nodes or edges property associated values have been added. Many algorithms have been rewritten to use these extensions giving huge performance improvements. Many bugs have been also fixed especially in the GUI. ** NIER and Tool track deadline is June 23, 2017 ** VISSOFT 2017: 5th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization -== Call for Papers ==- Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools. VISSOFT topics of interest include: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data. * Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging. * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools with development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualizations * Industrial experience with using software visualization * Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning. Following the effort initiated at ESEC/FSE’11, authors of accepted technical papers at VISSOFT 2017 can have their artifacts evaluated by the program committee. Positively evaluated artifacts will be reflected in the paper publication, presentation, and be formally announced during the conference. The NIER contributions describe work-in-progress and preliminary exciting results. Authors should include open questions and even provocative hypotheses to get early feedback on their research ideas or even support through new research collaborations. NIER papers have to be maximum 5 pages long (including bibliography). Tool contributions describe the design or actual utilization of software visualization tools, with a focus on relevant tool construction aspects or the use of the tool for gaining new insights. Authors should be prepared to demonstrate their tool at the conference. The submission may also contain a link to a screencast (e.g., YouTube video).
