VIP Vis in Practice 2017 http://visinpractice.org/ Visualization Solutions in the Wild The 2017 Workshop on Visualization in Practice (VIP) is an opportunity for visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences, insights, and ideas in applying the latest visualization and visual analytics research to real world problems. VIP targets work at the interface between visualization research and specific application domains. It is highly interdisciplinary and focused on delivering actual value to users. This year, we specifically focus on visualization solutions in the wild, i.e. on tools, systems, or frameworks which are actively used. The workshop will cover all aspects from their initial conception and design, the process of getting them into use, and the long-term work of extending and sustaining them. The 2017 VIP workshop will be held on Monday 2nd October in conjunction with IEEE VIS<http://ieeevis.org> in Phoenix, Arizona (October 1-6). Topics Vis in Practice is a forum for vis practitioners and application-oriented researchers to exchange ideas about the use of state-of-the-art visualization and visual analytics methods on real world problems. This year, we are looking for descriptions of visualization solutions that have proven their benefit in a real-world application setting. Successful submissions will put a strong focus on demonstrating practical impact in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: * User Involvement. The goal of a practical visualization solution should be to address a specific visualization and/or problem posed by a prospective user group, oftentimes experts from other domains. Interaction with users is tricky; they frame their analysis problem in their own terms, which are often nontrivial for visualization experts to understand, and they may find it hard to gauge how their work can benefit from state-of-the-art visualization methods. This leads to interesting questions: * How do we involve users throughout the development? How can we understand their problem domains? * How do we communicate the added value of modern visualization approaches? * Can we identify best practices that transcend specific applications? * Application-driven Design. Generally, no uniquely defined, "correct" approach exists for any given visualization problem. Developing a working solution requires identifying viable options, weighing them, and eventually selecting a small subset. To this end, authors might answer these questions: * What process did you follow to design your solution? Did you use specific visualization methodologies or visualization-theoretic models? * What design decisions did you face? What options did you consider? How did you make a selection? * How did your solution improve the existing situation? * Systems Aspects. Oftentimes, solutions will be a large system rather than a one-method, fire-and-forget approach. Such systems generally require a lot of infrastructure building, a major development effort in its own right. * How can we manage this extra effort? * How can we make solutions sustainable? * Should we consider an open, community-based development approach? * Knowledge Transfer. Practical visualization solutions will by definition live on the interface between visualization research and a specific application domain. Their development will be driven by an exchange of knowledge across this interface. * What does it take to transfer an existing visualization method from a lab setting to a specific application problem? What pitfalls might we encounter? How can we overcome them? * What parts of the problem remain challenging? * Are there open problems that warrant more attention by the visualization research community? Although we do not expect individual submissions to cover all of these aspects, successful papers will feature a strong take-home message for a visualization-centric audience. We ask authors to contribute something beyond a "user manual" for a solution targeting a narrow application use case. Submission We solicit submissions of extended abstracts of up to four pages excluding references. Submissions should be prepared according to the IEEE conference paper format guidelines (http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html) Optionally, you may submit a video (MPEG, AVI, or Quicktime format, duration at most 5 minutes) showing your application or methods in action. This will be most helpful for demonstrating the effectiveness of your approach. If you would like to have your video included in the conference USB stick, it should not exceed 100MB. Abstracts will be reviewed for their potential applicability to the VIP workshop audience and their potential impact on the visualization community at large. Additionally, they will be reviewed for timeliness, clarity, and overall quality of writing. Note that research novelty is explicitly not the primary criterion for evaluation at the VIP workshop. Based on the outcome of the review process, authors of successful submissions will be invited to either present their work in a talk during the Vis in Practice workshop on October 2 or to prepare a poster for the VIP poster session, which will be held along with the VIS main poster session on October 4. All submissions for the 2017 Workshop on Visualization in Practice should be submitted via the Precision Conference System. Submissions must be received on or before June 16, 2017 to be considered. In order to maintain interactive and exciting presentations and posters, we require that at least one presenter per accepted submission attend the workshop. This two day meeting comprises one day with 3 keynote talks, 7 talks on biological data visualisation as well as opportunities for lightning talks, posters and demos, with a second day of hands on training workshops. The talks and training include visualisation across the whole spectrum of biological data types from ‘omic sequence based data through cells and tissues to whole organism physiology. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 10th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI'17) will be held during 14-16 August 2017, in Bangkok, Thailand. KEYNOTE SPEECH Keynote speech 1 Learning through Overcoming Inconsistencies, Prof. Du Zhang, (Macau University of Science and Technology) Du Zhang is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau, China. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, both in computer science, from the University of Illinois and Nanjing University, China, respectively. Previously he was a Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at California State University, Sacramento. He has research affiliations with numerous universities in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, China, Czech Republic, and Mexico. Professor Zhang's current research interests include machine learning (inconsistency-induced perpetual learning), knowledge-based systems, big data analytics, and software engineering. He has over 200 publications in these and other areas. He has served in various roles on numerous international conferences, and is editor or editorial board member for several journals in the areas of artificial intelligence, software engineering and knowledge engineering, big data, and applied mathematics. Professor Zhang is a senior member of both the IEEE and ACM, a board member of the Society of Information Reuse and Integration, and a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Phi Beta Delta. Keynote speech 2 Michael CohenSpatial Media and Visualization, Prof. Michael Cohen (University of Aizu, Japan) Michael Cohen received an Sc.B. in EE from Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island) in 1980, M.S. in CS from the University of Washington (Seattle) in 1988, and Ph.D. in EECS from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) in 1991. He has worked at the Air Force Geophysics Lab (Hanscom Field, Massachusetts), Weizmann Institute (Rehovot; Israel), Teradyne (Boston, Massachusetts), BBN (Cambridge, Massachusetts and Stuttgart; Germany), Bellcore (Morristown and Red Bank, New Jersey), the Human Interface Technology Lab (Seattle, Washington), and the Audio Media Research Group at the NTT Human Interface Lab (Musashino and Yokosuka; Japan). He is currently a Professor in the Human Interface Lab at the University of Aizu (Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan). He has research interests in user interfaces for telecommunications, groupware and CSCW (computer-supported collaborative work), stereotelephonics, digital typography and electronic publishing, hypermedia, ubicomp (ubiquitous computing) and virtual reality. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS VINCI'17 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI'17. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI'17 EasyChair submission system. The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI'17 conference proceedings as well. FedCSIS an annual international multi-conference, this year organized jointly by the Polish Information Processing Society (PTI), Poland Section Computer Society Chapter and Czech Technical University in Prague, in technical cooperation with the IEEE Region 8, IEEE Chechoslovakia Section, IEEE Poland Section, IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics, IEEE Czechoslovakia Section Computer Society Chapter, Poland Section (Gdansk) Computer Society Chapter, IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence, Poland Section Computational Intelligence Society Chapter, ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing, Lodz (Poland) ACM Chapter, Committee of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences, Polish Operational and Systems Research Society, Eastern Cluster ICT Poland, Polish Cluster of Research and Development of Internet of Things, Mazovia Cluster ICT. The main objective of AIMaViG’17 is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and developers to present and discuss the latest advances of artificial intelligence in the context of machine vision and computer graphics. The workshop covers the whole range of AI-based theories, algorithms, technologies and systems for diversified and heterogeneous areas of vision and graphics. TOPICS ======================================= The topics and areas include but are not limited to: - image processing - scene analysis, modeling, and understanding - machine vision - pattern matching and pattern recognition - image synthesis, including three-dimensional imaging and solid modeling - computer-aided graphic arts and animation - mathematical approaches to image processing, analysis, and synthesis - computational geometry - image models and transforms - visualization and graphical data presentation - diagrammatic knowledge representation and reasoning - monocular and stereo vision - modeling of human visual perception - innovative uses of various graphic and vision devices and systems PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION ======================================= Papers should be submitted by May 10, 2017 (strict deadline). Preprints will be published on a USB memory stick provided to the FedCSIS participants. Only papers presented during the conference will be submitted to the IEEE for inclusion in the Xplore Digital Library. Furthermore, proceedings, published in a volume with ISBN, ISSN and DOI numbers will posted at the conference WWW site. Moreover, most Events' organizers arrange quality journals, edited volumes, etc. and may invite selected extended and revised papers for post-conference publications (information can be found at the websites of individual events).
