We encourage the submission of STARs on topics that have not yet been covered in any recent STAR or other survey [1]. We welcome submissions that introduce emerging areas of research that are of relevance and interest to visualization research, as well as proposals on more traditional visualization topics. We also welcome contributions from related disciplines and application areas demonstrating contributions to, or benefits from, the area of visualization including, but not limited to, visual computing, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, virtual reality, image processing, computer vision, psychology, geography, chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, data analysis, computational sciences, medicine, biology, economy, social science, etc. All accepted EuroVis STAR reports will be published in the Computer Graphics Forum journal. ** Important Dates ** - Submission of STAR Sketch: October 14, 2024 (two pages, +references, +bibliography) - Invitation for full STAR submission: November 4, 2024 - Submission of full STAR: January 13, 2025 - Full STAR notification: March 10, 2025 - Second round submission: March 31, 2025 - Second review notification: April 14, 2025 - Camera-ready deadline: April 28, 2025 All deadlines are at 23:59 GMT on the date indicated. ** Instructions ** As part of the acceptance process for Computer Graphics Forum, STARs will undergo a multi-stage review process where authors first submit a 2-page STAR Sketch that they receive preliminary feedback on, followed by a full STAR submission. Submission of the STAR Sketch and full report is mandatory and will be conducted using the Precision Conference System (PCS). For detailed paper preparation and submission instructions please refer to the submission guidelines below. Upon acceptance, we aim to schedule each STAR as an approximately 45 minute presentation (subject to the schedule management of the EuroVis 2025 program). In any circumstance, a STAR presentation will be given a longer time slot than that of a full paper. ** STAR Sketch Submission ** A STAR Sketch briefly describes the planned STAR by outlining the topic, discussing its relevance to the visualization community, providing the planned structure and outline of the STAR together with all key references, and short biographies of the authors. The length of a STAR Sketch main text is limited to two pages. To demonstrate the relevant expertise needed to produce the proposed STAR, brief biographies of all authors are required as supplementary material. References and short biographies are considered supplementary pages and are not counted within the two page limit. Authors receive feedback on their sketches to help improve the submission and to inform their decisions whether to progress to the Full STAR submission stage. ** Full STAR Submission ** In the next stage, authors are required to submit a full STAR. There is no strict maximum length for full submissions. However, it is unusual for STARs to exceed 20 pages (excluding references). Full STAR submissions will then undergo a single blind, two-stage review process, similar to that of regular papers submitted to Computer Graphics Forum, where 3-4 external experts on the respective topic will evaluate the STAR. ** STAR Chairs ** - Marco Angelini, University of Rome, Italy - Christoph Garth, University of Kaiserslautern-Landau, Germany - Andreas Kerren, Linköping University, Sweden For any questions concerning State-of-the-Art Report submissions, please contact the STAR chairs at stars(a)eurovis.org. ** Submission Guidelines ** Since all accepted STARs will be published in Computer Graphics Forum, the submission process uses a multiple-stage reviewing process. The submission procedure is as follows: - Submit a STAR Sketch by October 14th, 2024. The length of a STAR Sketch main text is limited to 2 pages. References and short biographies are considered supplementary pages and are not counted within the two-page limit. The format of the sketch should follow the format specified in the formatting instructions for the STAR below. STAR Sketches will be reviewed by the STAR IPC and comments on suitability and relevance will be provided on November 4th, 2024. According to the feedback given by the IPC members, the authors can submit a full STAR by January 13th, 2025. The requirements for EuroVis 2025 STARs follow the EUROGRAPHICS policy on STAR length. We do not impose strict maximum lengths for submitted STARs. However, it is unusual for STARs to exceed 20 pages (in CGF latex style) including all figures and tables, but excluding references. There is no limit as to the number of references or the number of pages for references. STARs should only be as long as their content justifies. Reviewers might rate a submission lower if it is perceived as being unnecessarily long. Authors are encouraged to use supplementary documents to provide extra content. To submit, please go to “submissions in progress” on PCS. Full STAR submissions will then undergo a single blind, two-stage review process, similar to that of regular papers submitted to Computer Graphics Forum, where 3-4 external experts on the respective topic will evaluate the STAR. Once your full STAR submission has been accepted or conditionally accepted, submit your revised version together with a cover letter detailing your changes by March 31st, 2025. To do so, please go to “submissions in progress” in PCS. The camera-ready version is due on April 28th, 2025. ** Formatting Instructions ** The sketch as well as the full version submission of the STAR should be submitted as a PDF file using the EuroVis 2025 LaTeX2e Style template. The template will be made available soon. On Overleaf, this template can be imported easily by selecting “New Project” -> “Upload Project” and uploading the zip file. Use EGauthorGuidelines-eurovis25-star.tex for your submission. Please make sure that images embedded in your paper do not contain transparent pixels (i.e., an alpha channel of a transparent color), because this will lead to problems when the resulting PDF is displayed or printed. Submissions can also include supplementary material such as videos or executable programs. The server will accept uploads of at most 200 MB, so multiple files of over 200 MB must be submitted separately. Please use only the most common video codecs (e.g., MP4 format using the H.264 codec) to maximize the chances that the reviewers can see it. STAR Sketches and full STARs are submitted using the Precision Conference Submission System (PCS). **** Camera Ready Version **** In order to submit the camera ready version to EuroVis 2025, authors should prepare their submissions as a PDF file using the EuroVis 2025 LaTeX2e Style. Please ensure that the option \SpecialIssuePaper is used. Authors of accepted papers are also requested to fill in the Exclusive License Agreement (one per paper) and send the signed document to s.behnke(a)eg.org. Common mistakes when creating the final version of the paper are: Headlines are too long: besides the running headlines, there has to be space for the page numbers. Please shorten the headline to accommodate for page numbers. Formatting of figure captions: “Figure <number>:” should be bold, and the caption should be set in italics. This is often caused by overwriting the default settings when using the figure, caption, or subfigure packages. Try using \captionsetup{labelfont=bf,textfont=it}) ** Author Guidelines ** A state-of-the-art report submitted to EuroVis 2025 must be original, unpublished work. Any work that has previously been published or has simultaneously been submitted in a substantially similar form to any other conference or journal will be rejected. All STARs accepted to EuroVis 2025 appear in a special issue of Computer Graphics Forum, containing the conference proceedings, and will appear at the same time in the Eurographics Digital Library. At EuroVis 2025, the authors of a STAR will be invited to present their report at a level that also allows non-experts in the particular domain to follow. We plan to schedule each STAR as an approximate 45-minute presentation (subject to the schedule management of the EuroVis 2025 program, but ensuring that STAR presentations will be given a longer time slot than those of full papers). At least one author of an accepted paper must register and attend the conference to present the work, and authors will also be required to submit a 25-second video preview summarizing their work and eventually present a brief (less than one-minute) summary of their talk at the opening papers preview session (also called papers fast-forward). Presenting a poster is a great way to get feedback on work that has not yet been published. Initial submissions should be in the form of a two-page extended abstract, which will undergo a review process. The poster design does not need to be submitted on the initial submission deadline. Authors whose posters are accepted will be able to submit their poster as a PDF at the camera-ready deadline so that it will appear together with the extended abstract on IEEE eXplore. In addition, *authors of accepted posters will be required to provide a teaser video and a teaser image*. More information can be found in the Poster Presentation section of this call. Poster presentations will be at the physical conference venue and no web-based presentation options will be considered. Authors will need to bring a physical printed copy of their poster to display at the poster session at the conference (instruction will be provided later). Authors will receive reviews of their submissions explaining the decision and providing feedback. The possible outcomes of this reviewing process are: - Desk rejection due to violations of the IEEE VR submission policies - Rejection - Conditional Acceptance - Acceptance Authors of accepted posters are expected to address any recommendations and conditions of acceptance prior to the final submission of camera-ready materials. This will be verified by the primary reviewer. Poster Presentation There will be three dedicated days for poster presentations throughout the conference week. Each accepted poster will be assigned to *one* specific day and will have multiple presentation slots throughout that day, e.g., during coffee breaks, to maximize exposure and interaction with conference attendees. During the poster presentation, one or more authors need to be physically present at their poster to discuss their work with other attendees. Due to the number of anticipated posters and other time constraints, there will not be a traditional poster fast-forward session at this year’s conference. Instead, *authors of accepted posters will be asked to provide a 30 to 60 second teaser video with their final submission, which will be showcased on the conference website, and a teaser image, which will be showcased at the conference venue.* We will share more details including video requirements, teaser image requirements, and the anticipated date of presentation with the authors of accepted posters shortly after the notification of the results. Best Poster Awards The best poster award(s) will recognize the most outstanding poster contributions. It will be based on (1) the significance of the research contributions described in the submitted two-page poster summaries, as well as (2) the clarity, creativity, design, and presentation of the poster. Awards will not be selected by the Posters Chairs but by a committee of highly regarded individuals in our field. These awards will be noted in the program and presented with a signed certificate. The Large Language Model Policy Large-scale language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT can only be used by the authors to edit grammar of their own text. Plagiarism All submissions must be original work not previously presented at any workshop, symposium, or conference and not published in any archived conference proceeding, magazine, or journal. At the time of submission, it is required by the authors to state explicitly in the submission form that the submitted work is the work by the authors themselves or is a summary of the authors’ previously presented/published work with clear attribution. Visual methods have become increasingly vital in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research, particularly as we analyze and interpret the complex visual data that emerges from various interaction modalities. However, the methodologies for analyzing this visual data remain underdeveloped compared to textual data analysis. This workshop seeks to unite HCI researchers who work with visual data—such as hand sketches, photographs, physical artifacts, UI screenshots, videos, and information visualizations—to establish a collection of methods, exchange strategies, and delve into the challenges and opportunities of visual data analysis in HCI. Topics We invite contributions on a wide range of topics related to visual data analysis in HCI, including but not limited to: Challenges and opportunities in visual data analysis methods within HCI. Methodologies for coding and analyzing visual data. Reflections on visual data analysis practices in HCI and visualization research. Innovations in tools and systems that support qualitative coding of visual data. *Combining qualitative and quantitative methods for rich insights from visual materials. Epistemological reflections on the use of visual methods in research. Submission Guidelines We welcome submissions of papers (1-3 pages) that explore various aspects of visual data analysis, including reflections on current research, discussions of methodological challenges, and future ideas for visual methods. Submissions can be in the form of traditional papers or pictorials that visually represent the analytical process. All submissions will undergo a peer-review process. Accepted papers will be shared among participants prior to the workshop to foster discussion and collaboration. Call for Papers – Digital Wellbeing for Teens: Designing Educational Systems Special issue of Interaction Design & Architecture(s) Journal (IxD&A) https://ixdea.org/digital-wellbeing-for-teens-designing-educational-systems/ ———— Overview Recently, researchers have been exploring the unexpected issues arising from the excessive use of personal devices and social media apps, particularly as companies adopt “attention-capture” tactics like guilty-pleasure recommendations and automatic content playback. These strategies exploit users’ psychological vulnerabilities to increase advertising revenue, resulting in significant impacts on users’ perceived agency and often leading to a sense of losing control over their technology use. This has led to the emergence of a new focus on “digital wellbeing,” studied in fields such as Human Computer Interaction and psychology. Traditional approaches by practitioners and researchers to tackle these issues involve developing Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs), such as mobile apps and browser extensions, that help users track their usage patterns and implement interventions like timers and lock-out mechanisms to regulate device use. However, both researchers and users are beginning to emphasize that achieving digital wellbeing requires more than just self-monitoring strategies; it is a journey of personal growth that necessitates education. Topics of Interest The goal of this special issue is to discuss ongoing research and ideas at the intersection of digital wellbeing and education. It aims to foster the development of strategies and interactive tools that mentor users, especially children and teenagers, towards a more meaningful and conscious use of technology. This can be accomplished in various ways, such as by designing new Digital Self-Control Tools with educational components, developing serious games, or creating collaborative platforms to introduce and support digital wellbeing learning in schools. Topics of interest include, but not limited to: • participatory and co-design of digital wellbeing systems; • tools and strategies to teach digital wellbeing at school; • strategies and tools for measuring students’ digital wellbeing; • novel DSCTs that include educational aspects; • gamification strategies for digital wellbeing; • ethical, social, and political factors. Submission All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. The manuscripts should be submitted anonymized either in .doc or in .pdf format. All papers will be blindly peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. In BILAI, major Austrian players in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are teaming up to work towards Broad AI. As opposed to Narrow AI, which is characterized by task-specific skills, Broad AI seeks to address a wide array of problems, rather than being limited to a single task or domain. To develop its foundations, BILAI employs a Bilateral AI approach, effectively combining sub-symbolic AI (neural networks and machine learning) with symbolic AI (logic, knowledge representation, and reasoning) in various ways. Harnessing the full potential of both symbolic and sub-symbolic approaches can open new avenues for AI, enhancing its ability to solve novel problems, adapt to diverse environments, improve reasoning skills, and increase efficiency in computation and data use. These key features enable a broad range of applications for Broad AI, from drug development and medicine to planning and scheduling, autonomous traffic management, and recommendation systems. Prioritizing fairness, transparency, and explainability, the development of Broad AI is crucial for addressing ethical concerns and ensuring a positive impact on society. The research team is committed to cross-disciplinary work in order to provide theory and models for future AI and deployment to applications. In our modern digital world, the role of maps has increased many folds, and maps in their various forms have become an underlying platform for countless tools, applications, visualizations, games, and other interactive systems, interfaces, and modes of interaction. Despite this increasing importance, and perhaps due to its transdisciplinary nature, research on map design, development, evaluation, and use is currently dispersed across many different disciplines and their specific publications, with hardly any of them focusing on maps as a basis for interfaces and interactions.This special issue aims to highlight the role of maps as a physical, theoretical, and metaphorical framework for interaction design and architecture.
