Each research paper should provide a contribution covering one or more of the following categories: methodological, technical, applications, and systems. - Methodological papers should describe advances in theories and methods of AR/VR/MR and 3DUI, such as ethical issues, theories on presence, or human factors. - Technical papers should describe advancements in algorithms or devices critical to AR/VR/MR and 3DUI development such as input, display, user interaction, or tracking. - Application papers provide an important insight to the community by explaining how the authors built upon existing ideas and applied them to solve an interesting problem in a novel way. Each paper should include an evaluation of the success of the use of AR/VR/MR and/or 3DUI in the given application domain. - System papers should indicate how the developers integrated techniques and technologies to produce an effective system, and convey any lessons learned in the process. Each paper should include an evaluation of its contributions, such as user studies, benchmarking and/or comparison with existing systems/techniques/methods. Review Cycle I (Submission to Initial notification) Submissions will be assigned to two members of the VR 2025 International Program Committee (IPC): a coordinator (primary) and a secondary reviewer. Submissions that violate the submission guidelines or that receive low review scores from the coordinator and the secondary reviewer will be early rejected. This stage of the review process will be double blind. We will strive to have all other submissions receive a total of at least three reviews. Based on the reviews and in consultation with a subset of the IPC, the Program Chairs will make one of the following initial recommendations for each submission: - Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper. Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), these submissions with substantial contribution will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. - Conditionally accept as conference paper. These submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings of IEEE VR, archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. - Recommend as a two-page poster. Authors of a submission receiving this recommendation have the option of condensing their submission into a two-page poster, including references. Subject to a final approval by the Posters chairs, accepted posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. Note that IEEE VR does not consider posters as a final disclosure of research results. Thus, work accepted as an IEEE VR poster might be eligible for inclusion in future publications. - Reject. Review Cycle II (Initial notification to Final decision) The revision of each conditionally accepted paper will be reviewed by its coordinator, who will make a final recommendation regarding acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. Additional Guidelines Abstract Submission. Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. Ethics and Responsibility. All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution(s), and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee prior to collecting data. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your institution, needs to be indicated via the submission system. Authors will be required to submit the name of the ethical review board, approved protocol title and number, and date that ethical approval was obtained prior to running human participants. Authors must be able to provide proof of ethical approval upon request. Incorrect reporting of ethical approval will result in desk rejection. Participant Diversity. To support high-quality research, all submissions describing research with human participants should strive for participant diversity. As first steps toward this goal, VR 2025 is encouraging the following: - Research that aims to benefit a general population should be representative of that population. (e.g. balanced across gender or age). Research that claims to benefit a specific population should clearly state and justify its focus on that population (e.g. pilots, surgeons). - All submissions must report participant demographics (gender, age, etc.). Notes about recruiting representative populations: - Recruiting more diverse samples does not imply that the research must treat these data as independent variables and analyze differences in independent variables between demographic groups. - Recruiting more diverse samples does not increase the number of participants required for adequate statistical power given an effect size. - Many ethics review boards and funding sources already require participant diversity for inclusive and unbiased research. The VR 2025 program committee and external reviewers will be strongly encouraged to consider participant diversity in relation to the generality of the claims made by a submission as a first-order reviewing concern. Submissions that make general claims yet rely on a severely imbalanced participant groups may be negatively impacted by the reviewing process. Review Duties for Authors. The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide constructive feedback and engage with authors on their work. Every paper needs three quality reviews. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, for each submitted paper, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. For example, if the same author group submits two papers, they need to commit to reviewing six papers. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. Presentation at the Conference. All accepted submissions must be presented orally at the conference. An in-person presentation is expected, and online presentations will be accommodated only in exceptional cases. Requests for online presentations due to exceptional cases must be made at least one month before the conference. Submission Language. All paper submissions must be in English. Previous Publication and Plagiarism. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. In some situations, a submission may build upon prior work. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and prior work, authors may upload additional papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation that highlights the significant changes or advances; these materials will only be seen by the primary reviewer. Specifically, this treatment is applied to the following cases: - non peer-reviewed works that are publicly available (on arXiv, as a technical report, etc.) - non-archival publications presented in past IEEE VR conferences (posters, demos, etc.) Submissions will be checked for plagiarism using IEEE Crosscheck. Detection of significant plagiarism will lead to rejection. For more information about definitions of plagiarism and IEEE policies in this area, please see the Introduction to the Guidelines for Handling Plagiarism Complaints We are seeking an enthusiastic and bright PhD student to work with us on leveraging eXtended Realities (XR) for addressing pressing planetary challenges. The focus of the position is on designing and empirically evaluating immersive experiences using state-of-the-art technologies and data analyses. Scientific context eXtended Reality (XR), including virtual and mixed reality, is changing the way we communicate, make decisions, and engage stakeholders. As part of a large NWO funded consortium, called HybridLabs, we are advancing the use of XR for making environmentally sensed data, models, and simulations accessible. We are creating unique immersive experiences using 360 videography and procedurally generated content for single and multi-user scenarios surrounding the North Sea. We are seeking to create the most effective, empirically validated designs for raising awareness and understanding of planetary challenges related to role of the North Sea in transitioning toward sustainable energy sources and its implications for ocean ecology, above and below the surface. Challenges eXtended Reality (XR) is a rapidly evolving field with immense potential, but it also presents significant challenges. Developing and empirically evaluating intuitive and natural user interfaces for individual and collaborative experiences is crucial because it directly impacts how effectively users can interact with and navigate virtual environments. A well-designed immersive experience should feel seamless and intuitive, allowing users to engage with the XR experience without extensive training or discomfort. This is especially important when considering diverse populations and engaging stakeholders and citizens. Moreover, designs and experiences should provide opportunities for impact in the physical world such as raising awareness, being informative, and inspiring behavioral changes. Method This PhD focuses on advancing the scientific understanding of XR in the context of addressing planetary challenges, particularly the ecology of the North Sea. The PhD candidate will be involved in collaborative efforts to design immersive experiences for single and multi-user environments for the North Sea, above and below the surface. The PhD candidate will conduct data intensive empirical studies to evaluate design choices qualitatively and quantitatively using state of the art immersive designs and technologies. We are combining a plethora of sensory information for a comprehensive assessment of immersive designs. Within the HybridLabs project, the candidate will work together with PostDocs and other PhD candidates from, for example, Marine Animal Ecology Group at the WUR. IEEE CG&A seeks submissions for its upcoming Sept 2025 special issue on Breakthroughs, Challenges, and Opportunities in Biological Data Visualization, with a submission deadline of Feb 21st, 2025. https://www.computer.org/digital-library/magazines/cg/cfp-biological-data-v… The rapidly expanding data generated by advanced methods in biology is creating enormous challenges at the interface between humans and biological data that can be represented and analyzed visually. To meet these challenges, a blend of methodology from the visualization, bioinformatics and biology domains is required. This methodology encompasses perception and design knowledge, algorithm design, techniques for analyzing and visualizing big data, statistics, and specific domain knowledge for different application problems. Powerful and integrative visualization methods are necessary, as well as methods for visually communicating the outcome of computational analytical methods and findings. This special issue aims to highlight new challenges in biological data visualization (BioVis), and state-of-the-art solutions created by the vibrant BioVis community. We invite contributions on all aspects of data visualization in biology, from molecular to cell, tissue, organism and population biology. Review Cycle I (Submission to Initial notification) Submissions will be assigned to two members of the VR 2025 International Program Committee (IPC): a coordinator (primary) and a secondary reviewer. Submissions that violate the submission guidelines or that receive low review scores from the coordinator and the secondary reviewer will be early rejected. This stage of the review process will be double blind. We will strive to have all other submissions receive a total of at least three reviews. Based on the reviews and in consultation with a subset of the IPC, the Program Chairs will make one of the following initial recommendations for each submission: - Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper. Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), these submissions with substantial contribution will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. - Conditionally accept as conference paper. These submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings of IEEE VR, archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. - Recommend as a two-page poster. Authors of a submission receiving this recommendation have the option of condensing their submission into a two-page poster, including references. Subject to a final approval by the Posters chairs, accepted posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. Note that IEEE VR does not consider posters as a final disclosure of research results. Thus, work accepted as an IEEE VR poster might be eligible for inclusion in future publications. - Reject. Review Cycle II (Initial notification to Final decision) The revision of each conditionally accepted paper will be reviewed by its coordinator, who will make a final recommendation regarding acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. Additional Guidelines Abstract Submission. Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. Ethics and Responsibility. All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution(s), and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee prior to collecting data. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your institution, needs to be indicated via the submission system. Authors will be required to submit the name of the ethical review board, approved protocol title and number, and date that ethical approval was obtained prior to running human participants. Authors must be able to provide proof of ethical approval upon request. Incorrect reporting of ethical approval will result in desk rejection. Participant Diversity. To support high-quality research, all submissions describing research with human participants should strive for participant diversity. As first steps toward this goal, VR 2025 is encouraging the following: - Research that aims to benefit a general population should be representative of that population. (e.g. balanced across gender or age). Research that claims to benefit a specific population should clearly state and justify its focus on that population (e.g. pilots, surgeons). - All submissions must report participant demographics (gender, age, etc.). Notes about recruiting representative populations: - Recruiting more diverse samples does not imply that the research must treat these data as independent variables and analyze differences in independent variables between demographic groups. - Recruiting more diverse samples does not increase the number of participants required for adequate statistical power given an effect size. - Many ethics review boards and funding sources already require participant diversity for inclusive and unbiased research. The VR 2025 program committee and external reviewers will be strongly encouraged to consider participant diversity in relation to the generality of the claims made by a submission as a first-order reviewing concern. Submissions that make general claims yet rely on a severely imbalanced participant groups may be negatively impacted by the reviewing process. Review Duties for Authors. The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide constructive feedback and engage with authors on their work. Every paper needs three quality reviews. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, for each submitted paper, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. For example, if the same author group submits two papers, they need to commit to reviewing six papers. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. Presentation at the Conference. All accepted submissions must be presented orally at the conference. An in-person presentation is expected, and online presentations will be accommodated only in exceptional cases. Requests for online presentations due to exceptional cases must be made at least one month before the conference. Submission Language. All paper submissions must be in English. Previous Publication and Plagiarism. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. Demos should interest the broad XR community and be presentable in a conference setting exhibiting new and innovative work. The conference will provide basic infrastructure. Additionally, authors of accepted demos will present an overview in a fast-forward research demonstration session to summarize their demo and relate it to research being performed at their lab. The research demonstrations will be an in-person event. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES A demo proposal should include: - A two-page extended abstract (including references) in PDF format describing the demo and the research. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ISS) is the premier academic venue for research in the design, development, and use of new and emerging interactive surface technologies and interactive spaces. This years conference will take place 27-30 October 2024 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Visual methods have become increasingly vital in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research, particularly as we analyze and interpret the complex visual data that emerges from various interaction modalities. However, the methodologies for analyzing this visual data remain underdeveloped compared to textual data analysis. This workshop seeks to unite HCI researchers who work with visual data—such as hand sketches, photographs, physical artifacts, UI screenshots, videos, and information visualizations—to establish a collection of methods, exchange strategies, and delve into the challenges and opportunities of visual data analysis in HCI. Topics We invite contributions on a wide range of topics related to visual data analysis in HCI, including but not limited to: Challenges and opportunities in visual data analysis methods within HCI. Methodologies for coding and analyzing visual data. Reflections on visual data analysis practices in HCI and visualization research. Innovations in tools and systems that support qualitative coding of visual data. *Combining qualitative and quantitative methods for rich insights from visual materials. Epistemological reflections on the use of visual methods in research. Submission Guidelines We welcome submissions of papers (1-3 pages) that explore various aspects of visual data analysis, including reflections on current research, discussions of methodological challenges, and future ideas for visual methods. Submissions can be in the form of traditional papers or pictorials that visually represent the analytical process. All submissions will undergo a peer-review process. Accepted papers will be shared among participants prior to the workshop to foster discussion and collaboration. It is open to anyone interested in 3D User Interfaces (3DUIs) and Virtual Reality, from researchers to students, enthusiasts, and professionals. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate innovative and creative solutions to challenging 3DUI problems. The topic of this year is “United for Planet Earth: Promoting Environmental Sustainability in Collaborative Virtual Environments”. Given the increasing importance of an ecologically friendly lifestyle, collaborative virtual environments provide a promising meeting platform to simulate real-world encounters without the need for physical travel. What’s more, meeting in an immersive 3D space offers a large variety of novel opportunities to educate oneself, teach each other, and explore the complex relationships that altogether affect today’s and tomorrow’s climate. This year’s 3DUI contest asks participants to suggest novel forms of teaching, understanding, and/or promoting environmental sustainability collaboratively as a team in Extended Reality (VR/AR/MR/XR). Participants are asked to propose a 3DUI project in which at least two collaborators can work on an environmental issue together. Submissions will be evaluated through the following criteria: 1. 1. Efficiency and convenience of user operations 2. Complexity of collaborative interaction 3. Novelty of the 3DUI design 4. Enjoyment and engagement (fun) Selected contestants will be required to provide a software demonstration of their solutions using the OpenXR standard, ensuring compatibility with consumer mixed-reality hardware. Requirements for the selection and presentation are specified below. Teams Teams of up to ten people may submit solutions. Paper Teams must submit a short paper of two pages, including a description of the solution, details about the software developed, a brief description of the closest related work and how the system is novel, and a description of how they iterated upon the design. If the submission is accepted, this paper will be included in the IEEE VR Conference proceedings as a two-page extended abstract describing the contest solution. Therefore, it must be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format as specified for VR conference papers. Video Teams will also submit a video that presents the solution to the public, including an explanation of the equipment, software, and interaction techniques used to solve the problem. If the submission is accepted, the video will be made publicly available. Videos should have a length of between 3 and 5 minutes and should include the title along with the names and affiliations of the contestants. The submitted file should be a high-quality compressed video with a size of no more than 300 MB and submitted directly via the submission system or via a link to an unlisted video on an online platform like YouTube. On-Site Demonstration If the submission is accepted, authors will participate in a demo session at the conference, where they will showcase their work to the IEEE VR community. The winner of the contest will be determined at IEEE VR, for which various judges from the community will try out and rate the presented 3DUIs. The judging criteria are novelty, usability, fun, and the relevance of the topic. Furthermore, we will offer an on-site voting platform for all conference attendees. The final score will be the combination of the expert judges’ scores and the audience scores.
